GoodwillNyNj’s Guide to Thrifting, Part 2: the 20-Minute Thrift Run

Last month we launched our How to Thrift series because, well, as great as it looks, making a style out of a thrift store can seem intimidating. We’ve all been there – you walk in and see racks and racks of completely unique items and you know it should spark inspiration but, on a funky day, it sparks panic. It’s okay; it’s human. We’re here to help. Specifically our new GoodwillNyNj thrift expert Emme Bonilla is here to help. So sit back, relax and absorb today’s super-quick lesson: the 20-Minute Thrift Run.

Give Emme 20 minutes and she'll give you a whole new outlook on thrifting style.

You have a last-minute engagement and you can’t afford the retail price on a new item. Luckily, your local Goodwill color-sorts their inventory. Head over to the clothing article section (shirts, pants, dresses) and zone in the colors you like or you know complement your skin tone. You immediately should be able to see three or four options that pop from the rack.

I, for one, am a fan of red. Can you tell?:

Color-sorting makes shopping so easy!

Going for brands you have worn before is a time-saving tip since you’re probably more familiar with their sizing. Then again, with prices this low, if you’re willing to take a spin in the dressing room (or live on the wild side), feel free to experiment too. So many great thrifted styles stem from a sense of adventure. What have you got to lose? After all, it’s only 20 minutes!

Pro Thrifting Tip: For contemporary clothing (not vintage) know your size in American and European measurements. A size 12 in the US is not the same in the UK!
