Goodwill Gems: Big Style, Little Stress, Sexy Studded Heels

Meet the new you, just in time for spring. Our Lauren Haslett is rediscovering her Springtime self at her local Goodwill, and she’s finding out she’s especially in the market for high-style, low-fuss finds. For instance – she’s head over heels for week’s Goodwill Gem: Big Style, Little Stress, Sexy Studded Heels!

sss
Made in soft, richly colored leather and accented with trendy studded details, these super chic heeled sandals are all you need to complete your spring-to-summer wardrobe.

Big style, little stress. Haven’t you always wanted to know the perfect formula for creating stylish ensembles every day, while putting in minimal amounts of time and effort? Of course you have! We’re all short on time and long on errands, so finding a way to look great without knocking yourself out to get there is every city girl’s dream – or at least it’s this girl’s, and I really don’t think I’m alone here…

And while I can’t really claim this combo is perfect – everyone has their own individual style – it does come in handy in a pinch. The key to this easy-peezy, yet still fabulously stylish look? The sexy, studded, high-heeled sandals I grabbed for an absolute steal at my local Goodwill store, of course.

Just in case you’re not in the know yet, a Goodwill Window Sale is when the best items in the store (which have been displayed in the window for days if not weeks) go on sale. There are often designer items and high-priced toys in the mix. We’ve seen everything from red lacquered Chinese lions to a Ferragamo heels to pristine electric guitars. Crowds form early, so try to get to the store well before doors open.

To find your nearest Goodwill, visit http://www.goodwillnynj.org/findgoodwill.aspx. And if you haven’t donated to Goodwill recently, now would be a great time – not only will you be helping your community, if you donate this April, you’ll get a free tote bag in the process!

All Thrifty States Comes to New York!

New York just got even better – yesterday, All Thrifty States‘ Jenna Isaacson brought her and her second-hand mission into it.

Welcome to New York, Jenna!
Welcome to New York, Jenna!

All Thrifty States: A Visual Journey through America’s Collective Closets is a photo project and upcoming book. It takes an investigative look into the significance of second-hand shopping, and how consumers’ purchases of previously used items can be not only a choice that is healthy for the planet, but an answer to the consumerism that has pushed Americans’ spending habits to the max.

Jenna left DC April 6 and has been hitting the road and stopping in cities ever since, creating awareness and promoting an alternative to American consumerism. Jenna’s goal is to encourage people to lead a more ‘second-hand’ lifestyle.

Of course, this lifestyle is leading her straight to Goodwill in every city she visits. Turns out Jenna has been a Goodwill shopper all her life – and now you can bet she’s a donator, too.

Jenna stopped by our Troy Goodwill upstate earlier this week and will be down in the Goodwill Village Boutique late next week. We’ll be sure to give you the details in case you’re able to swing by, and you can always check in with Jenna herself over at http://twitter.com/allthriftystate.

Happy Friday and Happy Second-Hand Living, all!

Style Icon Interview: Vintage Shaun’s Shaunya

Shaunya is the superfine style eye behind the site Vintage Shaun. Her curated finds have been featured on The Today Show and in Time Out New York, The New York Times, and The Blay Report. Shaunya shops Goodwill like a pro, pulling fashion out of every rack in her path. This Spring, she’s pairing up with us and Kimberlee VDW in our first ever #SpringFling contest. It was only a matter of time before we named her our newest GoodwillNyNj Style Icon!

Introducing our newest GoodwillNyNj Style Icon, Shaunya of Vintage Shaun!

We hope you enjoy reading Shaunya’s musings on the retro threads, Lil’ Wayne, Power Shopping and more as much as we had hearing them. Enjoy!

How did you first get interested in thrifting? Were you raised to reimagine fashion as a youngin’ or did this passion come later in life?

I started thrifting as a teen actually I was around 13. I was obsessed with retro/vintage threads from the 70s and thrift stores and vintage stores were the best place to find them.
