Style Icon Interview: The Fly Patrice J. Williams

Patrice J. Williams is about as fly as they come. This girl is versed in chic-for-cheap even beyond her wardrobe wisdom, and her blog, Looking Fly on a Dime, covers everything from travel to beauty to cuisine. Patrice really is blogging proof that one woman can have it all. We’d be crazy not to spotlight this incredible deal diva as our newest GoodwillNyNj Style Icon!

Introducing our newest GoodwillNyNj Style Icon, Patrice J. Williams!

We got the chance to chat with Patrice about her style, her thrifting, and Living Fly on a Dime earlier this week. We hope you enjoy her as much as we did!

How did you first get interested in thrifting? Were you raised to reimagine fashion as a youngin’ or did this passion come later in life?

I got interested in thrifting as a sophomore in college. I had to attend an induction ceremony for an honor society and I had nothing to wear and no money! I made a trip to a thrift store and I was able to put together an entire outfit for less than $20. After that, I was hooked on the awesomeness of thrifting.

If you’re in need of smiles, bring vintage-y fun into your wardrobe and watch your mood lighten, all while looking like the perfect picture of 1950s feminine grace.

Simple and sweet, polka dot flats will work with many pieces already in your closet - adding a touch of fun and flirt to your spring.

Excuse me, miss! Want to show up at your next shindig, spring gathering, even just your office (absolutely anywhere, really), looking like the perfectly put together lady? It’s a cinch with a lovely pair of flats like this navy-and-white polka dotted pair, which I was lucky enough to stumble across at my local Goodwill store this past weekend.

Goodwill Gems: Classic Hollywood Glamor for Spring

Looks like we’re in for a couple more gray days before Spring starts for real, but don’t let the wintry mix bring you down. Beat the flower buds and bring color out onto the street with vibrant, eye-catching scarf. Columnist Lauren Haslett went on a hunt for a way to wear a bouquet while channeling classic screen sirens. Take a look at her pick from the Goodwill Stuyvesant Square Store and see how she plans to bring this vivid scarf out into the (eventual) sunshine:

This scarf is as pretty as a picture. But lucky for thrifty Goodwill shoppers like you and me, this pricey-looking accessory was just only $3!

Old school charm never goes out of style. When you’re in need of a little extra something, a little je ne sais quoi to jazz up an otherwise average outfit, nothing is easier or more effortlessly stylish than the perfect scarf. The beautiful print on this dazzling scarf I found at the Goodwill Stuyvesant Square Store (1704 2nd Ave b/t E 87 & 88 St) resembles a piece of modern art; the motif is abstract, almost like a watercolor, but the colors are vivid and intense.

Meet Emme Bonilla, Our Newest Blog Contributor

Meet Emme Bonilla. Our newest A Good Look by GoodwillNyNj contributor, Emme sure loves her local Goodwill. Why? Well, read on & find out! Also, check out her plans for the next A Good Look column & weigh in with your ideas on what you’d like her to write about as she crosses from New York to New Jersey and back again, all in the name of Goodwill!:

Introducing our newest blog contributor, Emme Bonilla!

Hello! I’m Emme Bonilla and I love Goodwill. How do I love Goodwill? Let me count the ways…

  1. I love clothes! Nothing is a better pick me up than rocking a new-to-me piece.
  2. I have a very tight budget. Shocker, right? Bottom line, I can’t drop $40 on a top or a trendy statement necklace. I look to Goodwill to fulfill my sartorial wishes.
  3. I love unique clothes that tell a story. I get bummed out when I purchase clothes at retail stores and the next day see another girl wearing the same thing. At Goodwill I’ve unearthed some one of a kind gems, including an authentic band jacket! Plus, I thrive on the hunt of the next fabulous item! The clothes and accessories I get the most complimented on tend to be thrift store scores. Continue reading “Meet Emme Bonilla, Our Newest Blog Contributor”

The Rally Wrap-Up & What You Can Do Now

If you’ve checked out our Twitter profile or our Facebook Fan Page lately, you’ll see things were humming this past Monday. What was all the buzz about? The Who Cares? I Do. Virtual Rally for Human Services in New York. In a nutshell, both state and local governments are tackling the budget at the end of this month, and we want to make sure that the people who depend on human services like after-school programs, senior centers, homeless shelters, food pantries, assistance for domestic violence, mental health clinics, foster homes, day care centers, and more aren’t forgotten.

While we love to post about fashion and thrift, the real heart of Goodwill is about helping provide the tools and opportunities one needs to reenter the economic mainstream after catastrophe like job loss, an illness, an accident, or a natural disaster. Your support goes a long way, but the government’s support of human services is also critical to our ability to help the 140,000+ people in Greater NY & Northern NJ every year.

You can see in the video below how these cuts would affect Richene, one of the many wonderful members of GoodwillNyNj’s Seamark Center community, a participant-driven psychosocial clubhouse in South Brooklyn aimed at individuals with mental illness.

If you’d like to join us in speaking up for those who’d be affected by budget cuts, please sign this petition here. Also, if this topic is near and dear to your heart, as it is to ours, please stop by our programs & services webpage, “like” the Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc. Facebook Page and follow @GoodwillNyNj.

Thank you for everything, Goodwill fans – we couldn’t do this without you!
