Hats On for an Androgynous Edge

Try a new fall style that walks the line. Just like last week’s find, today’s gem is a piece that has both masculine and feminine flair.  This swanky velvet hat is constructed in the form of a fedora, but the contrasting strip of ribbon above the brim and the fluffy, sparkle-dusted pouf to one side add a decidedly girly touch. This hat’s classic lines mean it will complement almost any face shape, and the small brim sticks out just enough to protect your face and eyes from nature’s less pleasant elements – like wind and rain – without obscuring it altogether. Made in just the right fabric for fall, this soft stunner is composed mostly of a rich, chocolate-brown velvet that will carry you through the season in style.

Borrowed from the boys, this brown velvet hat has a few details that are distinctively feminine and give it a flirtatious edge.

Idea for autumn. The lovely deep brown color, luxurious velvet fabric, and contrasting milk chocolate stripe and glittery puff at the side make this deal of a find look quite a bit pricier than it is when found at your local thrift. Which means this piece is easy to wear with a whole variety of outfits, dressed up or down. Here, I’ve paired it with a favorite casual office ensemble that’s mainly in neutral tones – a pair of stretchy faded, grayish-black denim pants in a slim, fitted cut and a subtly printed, flowing blouse in white and beige. The soft tones of the outfit would look lovely with the richer, but still not-too-strong browns of the hat, and its style adds a slightly more playful look to this otherwise pretty average workday ensemble.

But to really play up this hat’s gorgeous brown hues, try pairing it with jewel-toned richness – items with equal richness, like a wrap dress in deep ruby red, or a silky, loose-fitting blouse in an eye-catching emerald green. Or, if you want to go in another direction entirely, don’t be afraid to emphasize this accessory’s more masculine side – try it with a well-worn tee, a brown vest in a perfect-for-fall plaid or tartan print, and a pair of well-fitting jeans for a casual, but still fun and funky weekend look.

So versatile, this fedora-style hat, made in luscious chocolate-brown velvet, can be used to create playful, easy looks with a masculine edge, or to add a quirky, charming bit of character to an extremely feminine and dressier ensemble.

I Fell in Love with Steve Madden at Goodwill

The transition from summer to fall is always a tough one. But these sassy Steve Madden shoes, found this week at a Manhattan Goodwill shop, would certainly help ease you into autumn in style.

This is the perfect fall shoe – a closed-toe, flat, oxford-style pair that looks equally suited to the classroom or the office, these darling shoes may be practical, but they still have plenty of panache. The rich cognac-colored and sweet scalloped detail takes the best from both masculine and feminine footwear styles, and you’ll be able to run around in them comfortably during the busy days of fall, all day long.

With feminine charm and a masculine edge, these pretty, practical, and totally polished shoes will carry you through day after day, no matter how much is on your plate this season.

Lovely in lavender…or any other color. The buttery brown leather these shoes are made of is totally classic, and will look divine with a multitude of much-loved wardrobe pieces. And just because they’re brown doesn’t mean it’s impossible to wear them with all of that black you have stashed in your closet. Both are neutral hues, and the warm, reddish tint to the leather is actually a nice contrast and complement to starker black pieces. Here, I’ve chosen to pair my find with a comfy pair of pants in a soft lavender color, with a bolder top in a black-and-white print. The simple cuts of these items, as well as the varying colors and textures in this outfit, make these ideal pieces with which to show off these adorable shoes, with their own elements of contradictory masculine and feminine styles. But what’s wonderful about a pair of totally sensible but stylish shoes like these is that they’ll look fantastic with anything you pair them with – try some lace-up oxfords like these with a flowing, patterned skirt and simple tee-shirt, or with a pair of looser-fitting trousers in a lighter, dressier fabric and a brightly colored silk blouse.

The possibilities are truly endless with a pair of timelessly chic leather flats like the pair I found at a nearby Goodwill shop this week. Try dressing them up or down, with everything from elegant work wear to casual everyday looks, like the colored jeans and black-and-white sweater pictured here.
