Goodwill Gems: The Beyond-Basic Belt

Hello, friends and faithful fashionistas!

Today, I’m super psyched because I spotted a real Goodwill gem this week and now I get to share it with YOU!

And today, I have some serious truth telling to do, so I’m just going to come right out with it, straightaway: You’re not wearing enough belts.

What?! That might not be what you were expecting to hear, but trust me — however often you remember to throw one on before you race out the door, it’s probably not often enough. Belts can really be a girl’s best friend, and as basic as belts might seem, they’re an incredibly fast way to add instant shape and a dose of style to pretty much any look.

My latest gem of a find is a fantastic brown leather belt with a truly unique gold buckle detail that will really make it (and you!) stand out. The texture of the leather on this piece is almost like snakeskin, while the buckle is a double-sided piece that juts out from the middle at an angle, making its two sides look something like the two wings of a butterfly. It’s an awesome find that will add an intriguing bit of style to even the blandest of pieces in your wardrobe.

IMG_7892_edit

It looks kinda cool … but how do I wear this? Easily, is my response. Though you could definitely pop this fun accessory on with pretty much anything — jeans, boots, and a favorite tee, for example — it’s easy to take this too-cute belt to the next level and really show it off by using it to cinch the waist of a loose, flowing dress. As much as I’m all for comfy shapes that slide over the body in a flattering fashion (rather than tightly hugging your every curve), every stylish lady needs an ensemble that shows off her shape, and a fab belt like this one is an easy way to a slightly-too-big or just shapeless shift dress and give it an instantly polished and put together feel.

IMG_7890_edit

This simple, slouchy gray knit dress is ideal weekend wear, with it’s soft color and fabric, convenient pockets, and easy fit. But it becomes totally appropriate weekday attire when you pop on this pretty leather belt, along with a great pair of shoes like some knee-high leather boots!

When you #shopgoodwill , not only will you look good, you’ll feel good, too! Your purchases support Goodwill’s programs and services. Head here to find GoodwillNYNJ store locations near you!

@PlanetBrandee Part 4: Your Guide to Mystic March

(or how I school you in the ways of building your own wanderlust gypsy witch wardrobe!)

_____

Welcome to the FINAL FRIDAY, my faithful readers! The past few weeks we’ve burnt some sage, danced to witchy women tunes, winked at some fabulous Morticia GIF-filled inspiration, leapt on our brooms into Parts 2 and 3 of the series talking about RINGS and VELVET inspiration, and now we bring it all together 90’s redux style with Part 4: Craftiness!

Part 4: Get your CRAFT on!

Seriously – we’ve gone on quite a magical journey the past 30 days, with tons of outfits worthy of any sorceress, but Part 4 is when we bring it ALL together! Grab the velvet, grab the rings and the perfectly curated craft outfits, cause we’re going full Morgana here!

But first why are we so obsessed with this ultra grunge-meets-Hot Topic flick? A lil’ bit of history: “The Craft was actually a 1996 American supernatural horror film directed by Andrew Fleming and starring Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True. The film’s plot centers on a group of four teenage girls who pursue witchcraft and use sorcery for their own gain. The film was released on May 3, 1996, by Columbia Pictures and it was a box office success at the time with earnings of $55 million against a budget of $15 million.”

In short, it brought a whole generation girls out of Lisa Frank town and into the world of black fishnets and dark leggings, plus mini skirts (pre-Britney!) and eyeliner to die for. So, let’s look at some ladies who have gone above and beyond in nailing the look. Grab your gal and guy pals, head to your local Goodwill thrift to find fantastic pieces to pull this look together for next to nothing, and get your grunge on! Here we have a group kicking the plaid with a tasty Nine Inch Nails groove! Leather skirts? White as white shirts? Layering like a flannel Nirvana champ? YES!

photo-1-march25-post

If you’ve got the pale skin thing nailed down, go full Fairuza Balk, layer some deep reds, a strong brow game and a nose ring — you can even repurpose and older earring into one!

photo-2-march25-post

More Cali than Cult? Go gold skin and Neve it up! Keep it simple with a cap sleeve white tank and simple silver chain! We found one ultra 90s, post-Madonna style at Goodwill for only $7.99! SCORE!

So the spell has been cast! Blessed be the fashion! Did you love like Morticia? Dig the amulet zen? Snap a pic and share it with me for a chance to be featured! And stay tuned for my next #travel #adventure in April which has me going to a new destination, but shhhh…that’s STILL secret for now!

Till then, follow my #food, fun and travel treks on Twitter and Instagram @PlanetBrandee and see you on the streets!

When you #shopgoodwill , not only will you look good, you’ll feel good, too! Because your purchases support Goodwill’s programs and services, and 92 cents of every dollar earned supports our mission. Head here to find GoodwillNYNJ store locations near you!

Mondays with Mrs. T

Inspired to Inspired Others

I’ve seen many amazing DIY projects and realize how wonderful and important it is to bring life to your creativity to inspire others. I’m fortunate to have my son David and other family members who have helped spark that imagination in me and encouraged me to start my own DIY projects.

I’m still sometimes hesitant, but the more I’m around the creativity of others, the more I am moved and motivated by it. Another family member who has greatly inspired me is my wonderful niece, Nikko. Even when we’re out thrifting together, she’s always looking for that perfect item that she can add to one of her ongoing projects. I’m so impressed and inspired with her projects and her ability to create and re-create that I’m ready to take on a new endeavor of my own. She has several wonderful ideas for DIY projects and here is one she has just completed.

641_edit

Nikko got the shadow box frame and spoons from the thrift. She spray painted the spoons in a shimmering gold color and added scrapbooking paper and chipboard letters as a background, creating a cute and punny final product.

If you are among those of us who are still hesitate to begin that special DIY project, don’t give up. Like David and Nikko, there are many who do what they do to inspire others. I encourage you to do what is helping me. Continue to be inspired by others: Choose a simple project at first, visit your nearest Goodwill for your materials, and watch your creativity begin to flow and grow!

_____

Welcome to FRIDAY my faithful readers! The past few weeks we’ve danced to fabulous Morticia GIF-filled inspiration, leapt into Part 2 of the series talking about RINGS and now are ready for Part 3 of VELVET inspiration!

Part 3: Velvet for your LIFE!

Let’s bring it forward: VELVET is KING!

But first, before we go all underground on this post, let’s glance back at where this imperial fabric came from. Wiki shares this tibit on the sumptuous textile: “Because of its unusual softness and appearance as well as its high cost of production, velvet has often been associated with nobility. Velvet was introduced to Baghdad during the rule of Harun al-Rashid by Kashmiri merchants and to Al-Andalus by Ziryab. In the Mamluk era, Cairo was the worlds largest producer of velvet.

Hold on! Nobility? ROYALTY? YES! We always knew we were Queens. So let’s find a way to burn this hot trendy fabric into thrifted awesomeness.

Want to be modern and magical? Add a velvet throw into your closet! Source yourself some sweet blue velvet shoes and other plush pieces at a local GoodwillNYNJ store! Think of new and innovative ways to work this fab material into your wardrobe! Check out these dames for inspo!

Lauren’s Goodwill Gems – Say Hello to Spring!

It’s Time to Get In a Spring State of Mind!

Spring is in the air … well, sort of. We’ve been teased by a few days of warmer temperatures and a hint of sunshine, and now it’s hard to think about anything else. Soon, it’s gonna be spring. SO SOON!

There’s nothing more wonderfully uplifting and smile-inducing than the first hints of spring after a long winter. By the time mid-March rolls around, we’re all way more than ready to say hello to a new season – and with it, a new, lighter wardrobe.

This week’s fabulous find is a sweet pair of bejeweled flats – they’re a super cute, mod way to bring in the new season! These trendy fabric slip-ons are light and easy to wear – just the right fit for warmer weather. And the big, bold, clear gems are a fun way to add a little sparkle and sass to an otherwise simple and casual shoe.

IMG_7189
Looking for the right way to welcome the spring season? Look no further! These fantastic little flats are light, lovely, and walk a fun line between sporty and super feminine.

Being girly doesn’t have to mean heels. If you’re anything like me, you think high heels look awesome … on other people. Fabulously fashionable ladies walk the streets of NYC and other cities every day in crazy-high stilettos, strutting down the concrete sidewalk like it’s no big thing. But as much as I can appreciate how good a high heel looks on other ladies, I can’t always bring myself to wear them (hardly ever, if I’m really honest with you all here). So, a good pair of pretty flats is completely essential – especially in spring, when the weather is constantly changing!

So, what to pair with this polished-yet-casual pair of shoes? Honestly, another reason these are so great is because you can make them work just about any outfit this season. They’re cool and trendy, but not so wild that they won’t easily mesh with outfits you already own, like a pair of cropped jeans and classic white button up, or with a fun floral skirt and slouchy tee

001_edited
Polished but fun, feminine yet comfy and cool? You can have everything you want in a new spring shoe if you pick up a pair like this week’s Goodwill gem. They’ll go with everything in your wardrobe (promise!).

Here, I’ve chosen to pair my posh new flats with an outfit that’s insanely easy to wear no matter the time of year – if it’s warm enough, this ¾-sleeve blouse and soft gray slim-cut trouser can be worn on their own, but you could easily pop a blazer on top for an extra layer of warmth. The glitzy gray flats found at my local Goodwill take this ensemble to the next level – their feminine detail and shiny flair give this otherwise simple spring outfit an added burst of character.

Check back in with me here on A Good Look every other Monday for more thrifty accessory finds, fun styling ideas and gorgeous Goodwill gems!

_____

Welcome to FRIDAY my faithful readers! Last week we dabbled in the fabulous Morticia GIF filled inspiration, this week, we’re leaping into Part 2 of the series and talking about RINGS!

rings-jewelry-collage

Part 2: RINGS for your LIFE!

Everyone is chasing a ring one way or another! Be it chunky tribal turk like this gem, or traditional glitz Tiffany cut. But for the sake of our inner goth this week we’re focusing on the prior and not the latter!

If you’re just starting a collection of Steve Knicks inspired gems, aim for the Goodwill counter. I am always surprised at how many baubles get donated and many are in great shape! Vintage turquoise is a special weakness of mine, so keep an eye out and know that even if they’re a bit dusty you can easily clean them up at home. Plus, the history makes for fun conversations!

Check out these inspirational rings below — part artillery, part Alexander McQueen, all woman-powered! Which would you choose?

rings-bracelets-accessory-hand

Are you more the tribal type? Then aim for deep red hues and beaten/hammered silver — it’s a warm tone and super versatile with gypsy-inspired apparel!

Feeling the 90s? Slimmed down and stackable rings are a must, as is the 8th grade standby we were all so dedicated to back in the day, the mood ring!

Want to be modern and magical? Go for opal! It’s a gorgeous stone and if you’ve got a careful eye and some patience, it can be spotted in second-hand grab bags and upcycled jewelry pieces. Each has its own distinct personality.

Not sure which you are? Take a quick, fun quiz here to find out!

MRS. T’S KITCHEN

I had a wonderful time during the month of February celebrating Black History Month – this was the first year that I really had the chance to embrace some of the amazing activities that were organized in our area.

One of the last events to celebrate this month of recognition of African-Americans was The Plummers’ Kitchen at the Riversdale House Museum in Riverdale Park, Maryland, which took place on February 28, 2016. An open hearth (cooking over an open wood fire) was used to demonstrate the preparation foods that were typically made by Adam Francis Plummer, a former slave who later was able to purchase land in the Hyattsville, Maryland area. Of course, you will not find an open hearth in my modern kitchen, but much like in the historical Plummers’ kitchen, you will find plenty of hard work, love and patience. So, while I normally share my closet with you here on A Good Look, this week I’ll be sharing my kitchen – Mrs. T’s kitchen.

mrs-ts-kitchen-thrifted-items

My neighbors know that once a week, usually on Friday or Saturday, they can come by and hear the sounds of my favorite music – the harmony of my pots and pans. It’s a great sound and I enjoy every moment of my weekly cooking marathon, which usually last 4-6 hours. My neighbors often speak of the aroma of different spices that seem to find its way through the cracks of their walls. For over 25 years, my chicken noodle soup has become a favorite for family, friends and neighbors. My closest neighbors and friends may hear me say: “when you’re finished with your roasted chicken, don’t forget to give me the chicken carcass”. You would be surprised at the huge pot of chicken soup that can be made from one little chicken.

Well, you may be wondering – what does this have to do with thrifting, exactly? Take a look back at my kitchen – at the beautiful coffee pot and accessories, the Emeril cookware, the colorful pitcher holding my utensils, the picture of workers tilling the land – every last one of those lovely pieces were all thrifted.

From my wardrobe to my kitchen to every corner of my cozy home, thrifting has become a part of every area of my life and I am delighted to be able to encourage you to search for your own beautiful bargains and one-of-a-kind pieces at your own local thrift stores, like Goodwill. Like my time in the kitchen it may take a little time, effort and – most of all – patience. But it’s all worth it, because that special treasure (for your kitchen, closet, or wherever else) may be waiting for you at your local Goodwill.

Mrs. T

@PlanetBrandee Is Back!

Hello, again, friends and followers.

Recently, we made an announcement, which turned out to be slightly premature. We told you we were moving our blogs — including this very blog, A Good Look — over to our organization’s main website at www.goodwillnynj.org.

But then, friends, you gave us some feedback. You let us know that you missed having A Good Look and one of its most fabulous, most fun bloggers — Brandee Sanders (aka @PlanetBrandee) right here!

So, without waiting too long to right this wrong, we’ve brought A Good Look and @PlanetBrandee back! If you’re also a follower of our other blog, Where the Goodwill Goes, you can still find those fantastically informative posts over in the News & Events section of our main website going forward. But for all things related to thrifty fashion and A Good Look, please stay right here!

And without further ado, here’s the latest update from the lovely Brandee Sanders!

Pop quiz, my fashion freaks – answer truthfully!

Have you ever, or do you still own a black trench coat, pointed hat, batwing dress or caftan of any kind?

Do you adore Stevie Knicks, watch the Originals and/or have you done Rhiannon as a karaoke song?

Do you burn incense, love Tarot or LIVE for a good essential oil?

Do you know The Craft movie line by line?

Do you know your sign and/or are you one of those people getting daily horoscopes?

Lastly — black mid thigh boots, oversized rings, vintage 90’s, what say you: yay or nay?

If you’ve answered YES to any of the above, then you’re in LUCK because my next travel adventure has me gallivanting off into the desert sunset abroad – and in prepping, I realized my luggage and closet are fairly mystical!

And a little magic never hurt anyone so hold on little witches! We’re going to trek into the fog machine running, right into the huge, ringed world of Mystical March! This 4-part series will take you on the dramatic and often fab world of dressing to invoke the fashion spirits.

Part 1: Intro and The Basics of Witchy Wardrobes

Part 2: RINGS for your LIFE

Part 3: Vintage Velvet Redux

(And finally) Part 4: Crafting Realness

So for Part 1, I give you these gifs as your inspiration! I hope you’re excited for the summons next week!

Firstly, it helps to start off with the simple things, like strong arches and killer brows, like our girl Morticia:

Secondly, keep your monochromatic and/or dark jewel tone game on point, like this little witch, who is bringing in spring like a goth champ ala 1999:

Thirdly, can we get a little gossamer diaphanous Sleepy Hollow cloak-esque love in? Romantic, dark mystery gazing isn’t just for October!

And yes, before you crumble at the thought of white, it’s not just for wedding!

And lastly, keep in mind that you need to OWN the look if you plan on rocking it all. If you’re not Stevie, then go Katy Perry car wreck DRAMA. ALL in:

SO: Do you love like Morticia? Walk for abreast like The Craft? Dig the amulet zen? Snap a pic and share it with me for a chance to be featured! And stay tuned for my next #travel #adventure in April, which has me going to a new destination, but shhhh, that’s STILL secret for now!
