Finding the right outfit to wear on the first day at work can be a daunting task for anyone! If you’ve never had a job before, or have a disability, it can be even harder. Goodwill Industries and the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities are teaming up to help. This Tuesday, October 1 we will stage a fashion show and seminar at Goodwill’s East Harlem store, using merchandise selected from local Goodwill stores by 6 well-known fashion bloggers on how to dress for success for people with disabilities. The models styled by the bloggers will “walk the runway” and will give us all a lesson on how to be fashionable and fierce!
Fall calls for dressing down. I don’t mean all the time, by any means, but it’s a great time of year to start thinking about comfort, as well as style, and to really value simplicity. As much fun as it can be to play with fancy heels and decked out dresses, the return of cooler weather is exactly the right time to bring out those soft, cozy, much-loved sweaters, jeans, corduroys, and classic colors and shapes.
This week, I got lucky as can be at my local Goodwill shop, when I came across these adorably soft, furry, and totally on-trend booties! The velvety tan suede is just right for the season, and the go-with-everything color means this is the kind of bootie that can really become a go-to in your fall and winter wardrobes. The furry lining inside looks super cute but is also super functional, and will keep any stylish lady’s feet toasty and warm, even on the most blustery of autumn days.
Nail autumn ensembles by sticking to the classics. With a pair of statement booties like these, there’s no reason to go crazy with the rest of your look – these gorgeous pieces of fall footwear will easily stand out, no matter what you choose to wear them with. Here, I’ve chosen a simple autumn outfit that’s about as classic and clean as it gets, which is just the right way to show off this fabulously furry pair. On the bottom, I’ve got a go-to pair of skinny jeans in black, and on top, a long sweater in a lovely emerald green, to give this otherwise neutral look a subtle pump of rich color that’s still totally appropriate for colder weather.

The end of summer doesn’t have to mean the end of summer clothes. As we head into fall, days are getting shorter, cooler, and crisper. But with some expert layering tips and the perfect accessories to round out your autumn looks, you can easily take your favorite pieces from your warm-weather wardrobe well into the fall season.
This week’s gem – a totally on-trend pair of studded beige booties – is one of those ideal accessories that will help you get the most out of your whole wardrobe during this awkward between-seasons time, and even on into the heart of fall and winter. The soft suede fabric screams fall, but the light beige hue and cowgirl-like detailing in the stitching and metallic studs give these booties a laid-back, summery feel, too. And the ankle height – this year’s hottest boot style – and low heel make them incredibly comfortable and practical.
(Almost) all-season footwear. Though these booties clearly look like they’re made to be worn during fall’s chilly days and will look divine with some of your most beloved cold-weather pieces, they’re actually just right for pairing with a few of those go-to summer items that you’re not quite ready to say goodbye to just yet. Here, I’ve chosen a crisp white tank and flowing, silky, wide-leg coral trousers. These pants were a staple during the hot, humid summer months – they’re loose and airy, but still polished enough to wear to the office or an evening out. And finishing off this ensemble with a tailored denim jacket and my fabulous new booties makes this outfit far more suitable for fall, and just as stylish, relaxed, and effortlessly cool as it appears in the summer with a cute pair of sandals. And if you’re not into the wide-leg pants (though I couldn’t guess why), you’d do just as well to create a similar look with your most fantastic, floor-skimming maxi skirt.

The classic color of royalty is the ideal autumn hue. Many of us traditionally choose reds, oranges, and golds during the fall months – and those are always a beautifully bright and stylish alternative to the chilly season’s otherwise pretty bland palette of grays, browns, creams and blacks. But this week’s utterly fabulous find – a lovely and feminine hat in deep purple velvet – comes in a wonderfully rich eggplant color that will flatter just about any skin tone or coloring.
It’s a perfect pick during the cold months if the thought of those tried-and-true selections bores you a bit (or just doesn’t suit you). The subtly ruched fabric on the top portion of this hat, along with the darling flower detail off to one side, is decidedly feminine, and the luxurious velvet fabric is soft and oh-so-sophisticated.
Go old-school this autumn. This haute hat might seem a little too refined – or even too costumey – for the average young lady-about-town to pull off with ease. But really, it’s all in the attitude, and if it makes you feel like a retro beauty (as this piece does for me), then it’ll never do you wrong. Use it to add a fancy flourish to a demure or otherwise classic look that is just crying out for a little extra something.
Here, I’ve decided to pair it with some skinny pants in a very girly lavender hue – I just can’t get enough of the fantastically flattering purple! On top, I’ve chosen a cozy cardigan in a floral black-and-white print. This outfit has a modern-day touch, but the cuts are classic , so they do a great job of complementing this elegant accessory. If you’re not into slim-cut pants, go for another equally timeless piece on the bottom, like a figure-hugging pencil skirt.
With an outfit this simple and classy, and such a fabulously ostentatious hat to top it all off, keep your jewelry basic. Choose classic, delicate pieces to create a look that’s altogether chic and sophisticated, without having too many statement pieces on at once all fighting for attention. For a final (and modern) flourish, choose flat, streamlined ankle booties in a soft, subtle gray or taupe – they’ll anchor this classy look (and keep your precious toes nice and toasty) while still adding a more current edge to your timeless ensemble.
Here at the blog, we like to write about the wonderful clothes and accessories you can find at your local Goodwill store. We hear over and over again from our customers that they love shopping and thrifting at our stores. Whether it’s looking for a new back-to-school outfit for the kids, or a sharp new Fall ensemble for that new job, you can always find something of value at a Goodwill store.
So, instead of us telling you how fabulous our selection is and what great values you can find, we figured it would be fun to ask our customers to send us their stories about finds, and their pictures of outfits and accessories. We’ll publish the photos and stories here, and on our Facebook page too.
So send us a short paragraph or two about your shopping experience, and if you have a picture, send that along too, to email@example.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
