image016

Find everything you need to bundle up in style at our New Years Eve Sale Celebration, with all coats and boots 25% off Sunday, December 30th through Monday the 31st. (Just remember, our stores close early at 6pm on the 31st, so be sure to plan ahead!)

But before you snap up those coats and boots, we’ve got a range of good lookin’ finds waiting for you in our showcases and windows. Take a look at the line-up of sales coming at you this Saturday:

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29th:

  • The Greenwich Village Goodwill Boutique Window Sale: The sale begins at 9 a.m., and is first-come, first-serve. Each customer is given a ticket in the order they arrive starting at 8:50. Two customers come in at a time, and may choose two items each to purchase. If they want more, they must go to the back of the line and get another ticket. The doors open for everyone after all of the window customers are done, usually 10-10:15. You’ll find the Goodwill Greenwich Village Store at 44 West 8th Street, New York, NY 10011 (212-477-7024).
  • The East Northport Goodwill Window Sale: Tickets are distributed to customers on line by 8:45 a.m., and the doors open at 9. The store admits two customers at a time. Purchases are limited to two window items per person. At 10, the store opens to everyone unless there are still ticket-holders on line. Once they’ve made their purchases, any remaining window merchandise is up for grabs. You’ll find the Goodwill East Northport Store at 1900 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport, NY 11731 (631-462-4219).

Once they have made their choice, they are free to shop the rest of the store. At 9:30, the store opens to the general public. You’ll find the Goodwill Bellmore Store at 2736 Merrick Road, Bellmore, NY 11710 (516-409-5951).

Goodwill & Giving: Make a Difference Today

With the economic downturn of the past few years, charitable donations have dropped dramatically for nonprofits – some leaders even predict it will take charities six years to return to where they were financially in 2007. It’s the Season of Giving and nonprofits are in need; how can you make sure your holiday giving will have the biggest impact possible?

Giving is a gift in and of itself. Here's how to make sure your donations do as much good as possible...

With less than one week remaining in the 2012 tax year, we’re hoping to help you make informed decisions about where you donate, whether it be to Goodwill or to another organization of your choice. Here are a couple of tips to help:

  • Know Your Donation Bin: There are many bins on many street corners – how do you know which really benefit your community the most? Look carefully: you should be able to find a disclosure label on the bin noting the mission of the organization, contact information for the organization, and whether the organization is for-profit, a nonprofit, or a for-profit company collecting donations on behalf of another agency.
  • Find the Facts: It is up to you the donor to be educated about the organizations to which you give.  You can check to see if the organization is a registered charity in your state by confirming with the state attorney general or secretary of state’s office.  Additional information such as how much of their revenue goes to overhead and administrative costs can be found with a charity-rating agency such as Charity Navigator or GuideStar, or online resources such as GreatNonprofits or Philanthropedia.

Now, just so you know our facts:

  • The majority of Goodwill’s revenue is generated by selling donors’ contributions of clothes and household items at Goodwill retail stores and online.
  • 93% of our revenues raised go directly toward supporting and growing critical community-based job-training programs and services in our region.
  • We helped 14,000 people find employment in 2010* alone – that same year, our 18 different youth programs Goodwill’s served more than 14,600 children and families, and we placed over 600 youths in summer jobs.
  • Our stores offer on-the-job training and employment experience to almost 2,200 persons with disabilities.
  • In addition, these stores play an active role in supporting our environmental programs, too, keeping 48 million pounds out of landfills in 2010*.

Thank you for giving back no matter where you give, and if you give to Goodwill this holiday season, an extra-special thank you to you!

*We’re still working on our numbers for 2011 and 2012, but as soon as we have them, we’ll share them here too. We couldn’t be more proud of the great work your support allows us and others to do!

Goodwill Gems: The Non-Denominational All-Party-Friendly Classic Winter Scarf

Happy Hanukkah all! If you’re anything like us, you’ve been shuttling from one night’s gathering to the next, taste-testing latkes (and the occasional gingerbread) all over town. All that bustling around means it’s as important as ever to be bundled up. Our correspondent Lauren has been celebrating the season with her newest Goodwill find, this week’s Goodwill Gem: The Non-Denominational All-Party-Friendly Classic Winter Scarf.

This scarf is classic in style, and the perfect weight to get you through those weirdly wet and chilly, but not quite wintery, early December days in the city.

Warming winter accessories are a must this time of year. Even though we’ve had some strange and unseasonably warm weather in the Tri-State area lately, it’s still necessary to fight off a little December chill. We’ve exchanged serious snow for dreary drizzle and gray skies this week, but that kind of in-between weather can be difficult to dress for – enter the all-purpose scarf.
