Goodwill Gems: Plum Perfection Peep-toe Pumps

A summer shoe can be hard to find. After all, a pair that looks as great in an office as it does on a boardwalk is no easy capture. What’s a stylish girl to do? Follow Lauren‘s lead and head to to your local Goodwill for this week’s Goodwill Gem: Plum Perfection Peep-toe Pumps!

These sweet summer sandals have it all: natural fibers, a little lift and the perfect showcase for a summer pedicure!

This week’s find is a fantastic pair of summer wedges that have a little bit of everything. The natural, woven straw bottoms are topped with a rich mahogany-colored, strappy leather upper.

The peep toe and t-strap styling are reminiscent of an earlier era, adding a bit of 1940s feminine glamor to a warm-weather look with a modern, casual flair. In their natural materials and colors, these sky-high wedges are the perfect way to top off any breezy, summer ensemble.

Now… how to wear ’em?

There are often designer items and high-priced toys in the mix. We’ve seen everything from red lacquered Chinese lions to a Ferragamo heels to pristine electric guitars. Crowds form early, so try to get to the store well before doors open.

To find your nearest Goodwill, visit http://www.goodwillnynj.org/findgoodwill.aspx. And if you haven’t donated to Goodwill recently, now would be a great time. The more donations we get, the more for everyone to buy, and the more funding for our programs and services to keep changing lives.

And don’t forget to drop off your no-longer-neededs when you come in! We’re especially looking for work-appropriate clothing donations for Goodwill Suits Vets, so we can give them to the veterans this weekend. Your donations change your community – help us make a difference in the lives of those who served!

Goodwill Suits Vets: Collecting Work Clothes *Now*!

In appreciation for the service to our country of the thousands of military men and women who returned home and to the workforce, GoodwillNyNj will provide a professional or work outfit to all veterans, past or present, at any of Goodwill’s 38 stores during Memorial Day Weekend, Friday- Monday, May 25-28, 2012.

The last time we organized a drive like this, it was a huge success. This year, we hope it’ll be even better.

We need the help of all our shoppers, donators and supporters:

  • Donate Your Extra Work Clothes: Please donate professional or work clothing for men and women: suits, suit jackets, dresses, dress pants and skirts, shirts and blouses, slacks and jeans, outerwear, shoes, ties, scarves and accessories. Drop your donations at any of our stores or at our DonationXpress attended donation centers in Eastchester, NY and Springfield, NJ. Tax receipts are available upon request.
  • Coordinate a Company Donation: If your company is interested in participating, we can arrange a special pick-up – just comment below or email us at goodwillnynj@gmail.com to arrange. By giving to Goodwill, you help our efforts to provide a broad selection of useful clothing to returning vets. Donors benefit on their taxes as well as supporting the program.
  • Reach out the Veterans and Veterans Organizations in your community: Tell them about the opportunity to receive  a professional outfit at no charge at their local Greater New York and Northern New Jersey Goodwills during open hours on Friday, May 25th through Monday, May 28th.
  • Spread the Word: We also ask you to reach out to any veterans or veterans organizations in your life or your community to tell them about the opportunity to receive  a professional or work outfit at no charge. All they need to do is show their military ID and mention “Goodwill Suits Vets.”
  • Share about our drive on your Facebook, Twitter or Blog: Please spread the word among all your networks, off-line and on. Link to this post, share the video above (http://youtu.be/6kzA63bGfhQ) and join Goodwill NY-NJ in telling all vets: “Job well done; thanks to you and your family for your sacrifice!”
“Thank you for the opportunity you’re providing us with in our search for employment. We appreciate it in these hard times.” – Antoine Bushel, Army 1978 – 1981

Goodwill Industries empowers individuals with barriers to employment to gain independence through the power of work. Please help – you’ll be helping us help veterans in your community get back to work and back into the economic mainstream.

Goodwill Gems: Neon!

Brights vs. whites. During the warm summer months (which we’re now fast approaching), many of us are tempted to trade our blacks and grays for crisp whites and declare our summer wardrobe problems solved. This week, though, Lauren punches it up a notch at her local thrift shop. Introducing our latest Goodwill Gems: Neon!

This super-thin belt in a brilliant neon yellow will quickly punch up even the most lackluster summer look.

Sure white’s alright, but why settle for alright when you can have outrageous? A clean, summery white is always in style, but even that classic go-to can stop feeling fresh and start feeling boring. If you’re a no-frills kind of girl, and not one for fem feathers, bangles or baubles, a wallop of color can be an effortless way to instantly refresh a basic outfit.

Goodwill Gems: The Wink of Ink Black

There’s a lot to be said for black. You look slim, streamlined, a little mysterious – plus any black piece you buy can mix seamlessly with your more vibrant finds. Win! This week, our Lauren set out to her local Goodwill in search of a dark and stormy staple that’d work just as well with brights as with blacks. Introducing this week’s Goodwill Gem: the Wink of Ink Black.

They may be that city girl’s go-to “non-color,” black, but these gems will have you feeling sassy, classy, and ready for anything as soon as you put them on.

Back in black. Maybe it’s the cooler, dreary weather we’ve started May off with, or maybe it’s just habit, but after weeks of searching for colorful spring accessories, I find myself gravitating back to the black. And on a gray, drizzly day in spring, what could lift a girl’s spirit better than a pair of fabulous, always-in-style black heels?

The Return of David Morgan & the 90s

It’s been quite a while since David Morgan of DavidLeonMorgan has posted for us, but we’re delighted to report he’s back and better than ever – just like the 1990s, style fans. Take a look and see this fashionable thrift fan’s take on the rise of pseudo-retro 90s chic:

What’s new in fashion? A few decades past. David Morgan takes on 90s style in this week’s A Good Look for Men.

I’m having a major Nineties moment, 1992-1995 to be exact. En Vogue, Bell Biv Devoe, D’Angelo and Bobby McFerrin have been blasting in my iPod lately, and earth tones, oversized shirts and colorful sweaters have been my wardrobe staples. I’ve even been telling my barber to cut my hair into a modern-day high-top fade. I just can’t seem to help myself.
