Pop of Color for Fall & Winter

Are you as excited as I am for the Indian Summer we’re having? I’m rejoicing over the idea of wearing some of my bright and colorful summer wardrobe well into October. But I have a feeling that the cold is going to suddenly hit us and I’m not sure if I’m ready to give up wearing bright colors just yet.

DSC_0248.JPG

I’ve been known to stand out in a crowd of people in New York City because of my bright coats. I plan on doing the same this fall and winter and so can you! Here’s my tips for wearing color in the colder months:

DSC_0260.JPG

Embrace a pop of color

A pop of color is always the easiest way to incorporate into your look. If you’re into wearing mostly black like most New Yorkers, try adding a bright accessory like a purse, scarf of gloves or coat with your wardrobe. I always grab this thrifted green coat at the beginning of fall and wear it well into the winter with a fun, chunky scarf and winter accessories.

Darker colors and hues count too

If bright colors aren’t quite your thing, why not try darker colors like mustard yellow, hunter green, burgundy or dark orange. These colors actually go together really well and tend to make the perfect fall outfit and look that you can incorporate into winter time.

3 Fall Must Haves

Can you believe that summer is pretty much gone? Temperatures in New York City have already dropped and we’re already starting to grab our fall fashion essentials. But who doesn’t love fall fashion? Fall is magical in New York and dressing for it can be too! Here are three fall must haves that every fashionista needs to have in her closet for this fall:

Jean Jacket

There’s nothing more versatile and easier to wear than a jean jacket. It should be illegal to not own at least one. I have about five in my closet in different washes and styles. I love throwing them on with dress pants and over date night dresses when the temperature starts to dip down in the fall.

Scarf

Scarves of all sizes and in all prints and colors are a must-have for throwing over your shoulders or tying around your neck to create the perfect fall look. Pair your favorite scarf with a long sleeve t-shirt for the most adorable fall look.

Backpack

Nothing says fall like a backpack. I have a million of them and get nostalgic when getting a new one for the fall season. There are so many super adorable ones around these days in a variety of colors, styles, and materials. Try trading in your over-sized purse for a backpack and turn heads while you head stylishly into fall.

Celebrities Who Thrift

We’ve all seen and have spent time looking at articles about celebrities doing things. They’re going grocery shopping, taking the bus, or walking their dog. However, if you look more closely at some of those pictures, you’ll notice that they’re doing way more than everyday mundane activities. If you take a second look, you’ll see that that your favorite celebrities are helping save the environment… through fashion. Check out which of your favorite stars are fellow thrifters!

  1. Zooey Deschanel

The New Girl likes vintage clothes. The actress, singer, songwriter, chooses secondhand. In an interview with InStyle, Zoey Deschanel recalls, “I didn’t have a lot of money, so I got things for, like $2, $3, and made myself look as good as I could. Limitations make you more creative.”  Thrifting allows you to create a unique look without spending a pretty penny.

  1. Lorde

The New Zealand native is a fellow thrifter! Lorde’s unique voice has a unique look to match, which she sometimes finds while thrifting. A unique look is the one thing you’re always guaranteed to find at a thrift shop.

  1. Sarah Jessica Parker

Not sure if you’re a Miranda, Carrie, Samantha, or Charlotte? Well if you’re a thrifter, you’re definitely a Carrie, or actually SJP. The fashion icon is also sometimes a sustainable fashion icon. The actress revealed that she adopted some of her style by visiting thrift stores before her Sex and the City days.

  1. Anne Hathaway

The Princess of Genovia and Miranda Priestly’s assistant are into sustainable fashion. The multitalented actress has been seen in frocks bought from flea markets.

  1. Eva Mendes

The talented actress wore a $6 dress from Goodwill to her first red carpet premiere in 2001 for The Others. She proves that a great look can be achieved without compromising the environment or your wallet.

Good Look Guy Finds: Nifty, Thrifty, and Always Under $50

Old school was never so cool

After the long and relaxing Labor Day weekend, we are ready to get back to work while others are ready for school! Today, we go back to our Upper West Side boutique to meet Charles, assistant manager of our 72nd Street boutique.

This month, our Good Look Guy exemplifies the very best our Goodwill stores and boutiques offer in fashion sense while still saving your hard-earned cents.

From the pool to school, the care free days segue seamlessly into more serious fall fashion under the tutelage of debonair, Assistant Manager Charles. Here he’s the epitome of head to toe professionalism with duds that do double duty from desk to dusk.

Metro males will want to emulate Charles’ standout, easy elegance, which was evident as soon as he joined the Goodwill NYNJ team two summers ago. Who could resist his passion for fashion? Or his great eye and innate color sense, so apparent when he enters any place, even a dimly lit room?

Now we turn the focus on this gifted shutterbug who can transform even the most style-averse man. With the simple pairing of exquisite Burberry and Brooks Brothers pieces, any masculine chassis is reborn as classy. Investment dressing is at your frugal fingertips. Just follow his lead and appropriate his impeccable taste for dapper additions that are well within your wallet and wardrobe space.

With Charles as your mentor, have a September to remember and one that makes every guy look that much smarter.

“I enjoy photographing people wearing formal attire. I’m keenly aware of what colors pop on camera, “says Charles. “For family portraits, I make sure there is cohesiveness in the color of the clothes they wear.”

Charles is the Assistant Manager of Goodwill’s 72nd Street boutique. He joined Goodwill NYNJ in August 2013. Charles loves fashion and is passionate about photography. He hopes to open his own photography studio some day.

Everyday Thrifting

Good news, dear gentlemen readers: we’ll be featuring a weekly column by GoodwillNyNj Style Icon David Morgan all about secondhand fashion for men. This week: optimizing your thrifting finds. Enjoy!

Each of these outfits contain one or more thrifted elements. How do you incorporate your Goodwill finds into your everyday wear?

Recently, I have begun maintaining a Flickr set of some of my daily outfits. Going through the few pictures I’ve posted so far, I’m surprised out how much of my clothes are from the Goodwill. I know I thift a lot, but certainly didn’t know it was that much. Everyday, at least some part of my outfit is thrifted, a testament to both the versatility and diversity of thrift store shopping.

Whatever the occasion, I guarantee that you can find a look within the thrift store. The most important tip I can offer in debunking any feeling of hesitancy is that:

  • Price does not determine style, and not even quality.

I have had pairs of pants worth hundreds of dollors rip after a few months, and I’ve had pants bought for dirt cheap last for years.

While I definitely appreciate the value of exceptional craftsmanship, and understand that some well-made clothes are truly worth the investment, you really cannot determine the quality of thrifted clothes based on price.

  • The hierarchical rules of fashion just do not apply at the thrift store.

Both high and low-end pieces have the same playing field and price point, which definitely puts the cash-strapped fashionisto at ease.

In short, if you are worried that thrifting will make you look cheap, I assure you it won’t. Dior coats share the same rack as high school varsity gear, and both are there for your wearing pleasure.

Each of these outfits contain one or more thrifted elements. How do you incorporate your Goodwill finds into your everyday wear?

If you are a thrifting pro, what high-end pieces have you stumbled upon at the thrift store? And how does thrifting influence your everyday style? Perhaps our examples will ease the worried minds of strict department store adherents 🙂

When you’re in love with all things denim, you always try to think of new DIYs to create. Currently trending in the world of denim is the Slit Knee. The difference between this and other shredded denim style is that there’s just a subtle rip that lies directly on the knee.

Finding the love of your life is a lot like thrifting. First you enter without knowing what you’re looking for. All you know is that once you see it, you’ll know it’s the one. Everything in the store is unique; each item is different and has its own history. You scour through countless racks and bins in search of what would fit perfectly into your life. You never lose hope, despite all the far and near misses.

But you’ve managed to do what some people deem impossible. You’ve found the needle in the haystack… Waldo… your soul mate! Now all that is left to do is marry him/her. This is where you’ll find yourself back at the thrift store. Not the metaphorical one about love. That part is thankfully over. We’re talking the real physical thrift store, your local Goodwill.

Goodwill can help you find the most important thing you’re ever going to wear, your wedding dress! The gravity and seriousness of finding a great gown does not equate having to spend a hefty dime. Goodwill’s bridal selection gives you an immense variety for a fraction of the cost. We’ve listed a few frocks to woo you.

1.jpg

This is a floor length Judd Waddell dress in the size 6.  The silhouette is ballgown with a fitted bodice and a full skirt. It has sweetheart neckline, beaded natural waist, and a tulle skirt.

2.jpg

This is a floor length Allure Bridals dress in the size 10. It has a trumpet silhouette and a v-neckline. The details on this dress are immense, having everything ranging from lace to a textured skirt and train. It comes with a partially beaded belt for an extra amount of sparkle.

3.jpg

This is a floor length Kelly Faetanini dress in the size 6. This dress is the perfect about of subtly and drama. The floral-eqsue pattern wrapped around the classic plain satin is both elegant and fashion forward.

Visit Goodwill when you’re on the prowl for your wedding dress. You won’t only be saying yes to a dress. You’ll also be saying yes to sustainable fashion and helping the community. It’s everything you could want in a dress and then some more.

Easy Fall Wardrobe Transitioning Tips with TheFabJunkie

Easy Fall Wardrobe Transitioning Tips

image-1

Ok, so it’s officially fall.

I couldn’t wait to break out this fluffy sweater I thrifted while visiting Buffalo. Cozy sweaters are the best for crisp fall days that move into cold nights. What’s the most fun about this season is the fact that you can layer lightly without feeling like a bundled up snowman (yes, those days are near but we won’t really speak about that yet). I wanted to share some of my easy pro-tips for transitioning outfits this fall. We sometimes don’t know what to wear when we get up in the morning. The temps are low but can get warmer later in the day. THAT can get annoying, especially if you decided to wear a heavy sweater. The solution to your troubles is LAYERING. Layering is not only fashionable but it can be extremely functional. Did I mention you should layer?

image2

Pro Tip 1: Wear lighter layers for easy removal. You don’t want to bulk up. It’s not necessary right now. Enjoy the weather and think light layers. So if you’re still loving that lacey tank from this summer- keep it in rotation but pair it with a cardigan for colder mornings.

Pro Tip 2: Make sure the pieces work together and separately. Think, “If I remove my sweater or jacket, will this outfit still make sense?”

Pro Tip 3: Accessorize. I always add this to any styling post. Fall colors can be a bit drab sometimes. Some colors can be rich but if you find yourself sticking to neutrals, jazz it up with something embellished. Throw an oversized hat on and it will take any outfit to the next level.

image3image4

My final tip is think outside the box and bend some of those unwritten fashion rules. Trust me, it’s fun! Until next time!
