DIY Halloween Costume: Office Cat

I don’t know about you, but I live for wearing my Halloween costume on the actual holiday. Did you know that Halloween falls on a Tuesday this year? I think there’s nothing more fun than wearing a Halloween costume to work. Here’s a cute and super easy cat costume that can be worn to the office or any party where you might not have too much time to put together an over the top Halloween costume. Here’s how I achieved it:

DSC_1060.JPG

Cat Ears

I attempted to make cat ears, but they didn’t quite turn out so great. Sigh. But my plan B was to wear two little mini hair buns where my cat ears would have been. I simply twisted two sections of my hair and twisted them to make these buns. I think it would be so cute to add a little glitter or hair paint to these as well.

Eye Make Up

I rarely leave the house without cat eye eyeliner. I will admit that it took me a while to learn how to apply. The good thing is that you can draw a cat eye in several different styles. Pick the one that’s easiest for you. You can also skip the eye liner and achieve the cat eye look with eye shadow.

DSC_1053.JPG

Nose & Whiskers

These really make the costume. I used a black eye liner pencil to draw in the dot on my nose and the fun whiskers. It took just a few minutes and I felt totally transformed into a kitty cat!

DIY Halloween Costume: Rosie the Riveter

Rosie the Riveter is the coolest girl power icon there is! Just about everyone knows the famous We Can Do it! Poster. The Rosie the Riveter Halloween costume happens to be one of the easiest DIY costumes ever. You can use items that you already have in your closet or you can easily thrift what you need. You’ll surely use and wear them again. Here’s what you need for your DIY Rosie the Riveter costume:

DSC_1017.JPG

Outfit

The outfit is the easiest part for this costume. Any jean on jean look can work – a jean jumpsuit, jeans worn with a jean shirt, jean overalls. I wore a pair of jeans with a jean shirt tied at the waist.

DSC_1027.JPG

Accessories

The red bandana really makes this costume. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a red bandana but I used a pink one that I had in my stash of scarves instead. You can use a bandana of any size as a head wrap or even wear as a head turban style that covers the entire head. For shoes you can do boots, converse or any flat shoes.

DSC_0994.JPG

Make Up & Hair

You can wear your hair up in a ponytail and create a retro look with a tiny bump at the front of the hair or rolled bangs. After researching this Halloween costume, I found that wearing your hair out is totally fine also.

I’m so into retro make up and wore cat eyeliner and red lipstick to capture the look from the famous We Can Do It! Poster.

Shining Shining Shining: Back to School Metallics

Individuality is important. As you go through your years in school, you’ll find yourself shying away from fitting in and suddenly find yourself embracing being the center of attention. One way to start that transition is with fashion!

Fashion is all about having fun! And what’s more fun than metallics and shimmer. One of the hottest fashion trends right now is metallics. Most people think of wearing shimmery dresses and shine only during the holiday season. I’ve always loved seeing touches of glitter, metallic and lurex during the day. How stunning and refreshing is a cute metallic skirt with a blazer or dresses down with a jean jacket? It is definitely a unique look that is both eye-catching and appropriate for school. The versatility of the look is perfect because it can be dressed down for school and dressed up for after school activities like a chic hangout with friends.

metallic trend

Lately, we’ve seen metallic and the shimmery look in so many new ways and colors. The sky is truly the limit with how you can wear and style this look. If the idea of wearing shimmer during the day or even in the evening seems like too much, here are two ways to easily jump into the trend for look to wear to class.

Jean Jacket to help Dress Down

dress with jean jacket

Metallics and shimmer pieces can be a bit loud. Dress them down with a jean jacket for a fun look that still let’s your shine and sparkle shine through. Have fun mixing different jean washes with your fun glittery and sparkly pieces.

Cute Sweater

sweater with shimmer

I love the look of a long sweater over a long dress or skirt. I found a number of amazing metallic and shimmery dresses on a recent shopping trip to a nearby Goodwill. All of these super adorable dresses could be worn with either cropped or long sweaters in solids or prints.

Sporting Your Goodwill Finds

It’s summer! School’s out, the sun’s out, and everyone wants to go out… to the ball game. It is prime sports season and whether it’s your own freewill or not, you will most likely find yourself watching a game. For fans, sporting events can be a joyous occasion. The suspense of the game and the rigor of the crowd are what you wait for all year. You’re in your element. However, if you’re anything but a sports fan, you’re in your worst nightmare. The suspense of the game is like watching paint dry and the rigor of the crowd scares you. Whether you love or despise the game, you still want to look your best. That can be hard to do when you’re trying to dress for the sporting occasion. Over-sized t-shirts and unisex jerseys are tricky to feel your absolute best in. If you’re a sports fan, you won’t be able to enjoy the game as much as you would if you don’t feel confident in your attire. If you’re anything but a sports fan, sometimes your outfit (and the food) are the only thing you’ll be looking forward to on the big game day. Either way, we’ve provided two different ways you can style your sporting goods. Checkout the lineup!

Sport 1

This outfit is perfect for one of two people: the avid sports game goer or the completely clueless about sports but still goes-er. The signed ESPN shirt is perfect for these very different people. You can turn up to any sporting event and still be on par, considering that ESPN is a sports network that covers a wide variety of sports. The t-shirt is over-sized, but that can work in your favor if you roll up the sleeves and tuck it into whatever bottoms you decide to wear. We’ve decided to create a feminine look, playing with the indicative red ESPN logo. We’ve complemented the tee with a short red skirt and matching heels. You might even want to wear red lipstick. The cased baseball is optional. This outfit is perfect for any sporting occasion, ranging from baseball games to football viewing’s at your parents’ house.

sport 2

This is for anyone that is a team player, but doesn’t want to look like one. At a game, you’ll probably see many people wearing your favorite player’s jersey. Make yourself stand out by incorporating your own style, or at least our style. We’ve combined this Laker’s jersey with high waisted flair jeans. You may also want to include a funky belt like this chained one. Whether or not you want to BYOB (bring your own basketball) is up to you.

Style Evolutions: This Week on Inside the Prop Closet

The Uniform

Image1 (4)
My style has gone through a few evolutions in the past, but none as drastic as this year’s change. Maybe it was because I took a leap of faith in January, leaving a full-time job to start life as a freelance entrepreneur. Maybe it was because I was going to the gym regularly, and my old clothes fit me differently. Or maybe it was a combination of both.

Regardless of the reason, earlier this year I donated a large portion of my wardrobe to various thrift stores and primarily opted for three basic pieces, instead: white T-shirts, jeans and boots. It’s classic, it’s simple, it’s utilitarian — everything about this uniform fits where I am right now.

Image2_Square

Up until this point, I was obsessed with color and patterns. My closet was one eclectic gumbo, which fit the creative nature of my life. But things change, sometimes suddenly. I’m still wildly creative, but more streamlined, pointed, minimal. Creative entrepreneurship requires a focus that I’m still grasping. And that focus isn’t just limited to office hours — everything in my life needs to speak to it.

But I’ve always been one to unabashedly wear my genuine personality on my sleeves. I’m still doing that, and could never give that up. It just so happens that right now, thrift store shopping trips often end up with a few T-shirts and vintage jeans. Tomorrow, it could be different. Who knows? That’s the great thing about fashion: It’s as fluid as you let it.

Multi-Functional Thrift Store Finds

3 Smart Ways to Use a Picture Frame (Besides for Pictures!)

One of the things I always look for when I’m thrift shopping is picture frames. These little beauties are great for displaying my cherished moments, yes, but I love them for more than that. In trying to DIY our home by renovating thrift store finds, and I’ve found picture frames to be one of the most versatile tools around. They can do so much for your home, and the best part is that they’re the perfect item for all skill levels! Here are three of my favorite uses:

1. Create Wainscoting on Your Wall

IMG_0340

Revamp your walls by using picture frames as a quick and easy way to create a wainscoting effect, like Charming Zebra did with this super easy method. You can even go one step further and add thin plywood sheets first, so that you’ll have a fully paneled wall, which Centsational Girl did.

2. Create a Centerpiece for Your Table

flower-centerpiece-picture-frame

One of my favorite ways to use picture frames is for a quick and easy centerpiece for my coffee and dining tables. The simplest way I’ve found is to spray the glass of the frame with spray paint (“looking glass” is my personal favorite), paint the frame, and add candles or decorations to the “mirror” once they’ve dried.

3. Turn a Drab Door into a Paneled Beauty

paneled-door

This is one of my all-time favorite hacks to a more beautiful home, and it’s so easy! It seems we’re constantly cursed with the flat, boring builder-grade doors, but thanks to this amazing idea I’m now ready to turn our doors into something much more elegant.

Updating your home’s aesthetic with picture frames isn’t just relegated to family photos any longer! Try one of these three ideas the next time you pick up a set of frames on your next thrifting spree and show us your work!
