Goodwill Gems: Mad for Bags!

Bags, Bags, Bags!

I am firmly of the belief that a fashionable lady can never (NEVER!) have too many handbags — which anyone who has followed this blog for any length of time is probably already very well aware of by now. But, in the spirit of spring cleaning — Goodwill NYNJ has a fabulous donation drive happening with Uber on Saturday, 5/21, if any of you all are in a similar spot! — and finally, finally getting my space in order, I am trying to pare down my pretty substantial accessory collection and only keep the items I really, truly need.

But of course, as soon as I resolved to not buy another item for at least a month, I spotted this beauty this Goodwill NYNJ’s Livingston St. store in Brooklyn!

IMG_8632

I mean, COME ON! A real-deal Marc Jacobs bag and it was marked at only $25! What a steal! It was in great shape (as you can clearly see) and also just happened to be in a palette of mixed neutrals — which, as you also know if you’ve been following this blog at all over the past few years, is pretty much everything I love.

Obviously, I could not say no.

But, I’m justifying this fabulous purchase by getting rid of other things I already own and don’t wear as much — and I can feel good about doing that now, because this beautiful bag is going to go with absolutely everything.

With a cute white tee and cool black shades (my go-to summer combo!)? Check.

With a sleek, chic floral sundress, just right for a fancy summer night out? Check.

With a too-cool-for-school look like this combo of trendy poncho, old sneakers and lacey mini? Check.

Basically, there’s nothing this fabulous bag wouldn’t complement or look incredibly awesome with. And that’s the whole point right? Clean out your closets of all the things you don’t use just sitting there, collecting dust — if you’re in the five boroughs, I highly recommend taking advantage of our Uber promo and getting a FREE donation pickup this Saturday, 5/21! Then, buy fewer, but way more beautiful things (like this gorgeous thrifted purse!) that you’ll love for years and wear again, and again … and again.

Goodwill Gems: Spring Bling!

A Very Glam Way to Step Into the Spring Season

YOU GUYS!!! It seems that spring is finally, seriously, REALLY here — for real this time! After a brief tease with sunshine and nice weather a couple of months ago and then cold, cold, COLD, we’re finally seeing some sunshine and warmer temps once again.

IMG_8667

To celebrate the arrival (finally!) of truly beautiful spring weather, I’m going all out this week with my accessorizing! Can you tell? I found some serious bling at GoodwillNYNJ‘s Livingston Street store in Brooklyn last week and I am SO excited to wear it out!

This gorgeous and spectacularly sparkly piece caught my eye right when I was walking up to the register to check out (all the jewelry is in the case up front, if you’re not familiar with this location). I was actually attending a very special fashion show event for Goodwill Week 2016 (which was oodles of fun!) and, of course, had to do a little shopping after the show while the store was still open. I instantly spotted a few things I just couldn’t live without and was running to the register to prevent myself from doing anymore damage to my bank account (not my closet, clearly!), when I saw this out of the corner of my eye … whoops. But how could I say no to this incredibly awesome find!?

IMG_8668

It’s a little heavy-duty for everyday wear, but this is the kind of necklace you can really rock on a night out with girlfriends or on a date night with your sweetie. Made up of striking silver chains, the basic metallic links are embedded with two rows of pretty rhinestones in different sizes for an extra, eye-catching touch of detail. It’s shimmery and will easily catch the light, whether you’re out during the daytime or at night in your fave club, bar or restaurant. But since it’s all silver with nearly clear, grayish stones of a similar hue, it’s not too loud or garish — just classy as can be!

thumb_IMG_4878_1024

You could easily sport this pretty accessory with a flowy, fabulous cocktail dress and heels for a fancier occasion. But here, I’ve opted to pair it with an ensemble I’d typically wear on a night out on the town with friends — something cute, comfy and easy to dance in!

On the bottom (though I know it’s a little hard to see here), I’ve got some saucy faux-leather leggings that look fantastic with boots, heels or flats, which makes them the perfect pant for pretty much any evening out in the city. On top, some loose-fitting, flowy layered tanks — a plain white one underneath and a lighter, gauzy coral one on top (which, btw, was thrifted from the same Goodwill store!).

And it’s really that easy — a slightly funky, edgier pant, a pretty, brightly colored top, and my glitzy new necklace, and I’m ready for a fun and exciting night out in the absolutely lovely, balmy spring weather!

Goodwill Gems: Stylish Spring Shoes

Hello, fashion-forward friends!

I’m back with another week of Goodwill Gems and cannot WAIT to share what I’ve found this week! While thrifting at GoodwillNYNJ’s Chelsea location in Manhattan, I was lucky enough to stumble across row after row (after row!) of completely fabulous shoes.

thumb_IMG_8239_1024

There were tons of cute heels, in all colors of the rainbow, and most in pretty mint condition, so it was really hard for me to select just one pair.

But of course, I had to pick one to post about (at least for this week’s blog update). And as much I love all that vibrant, happy color you see in the photo above, in true Goodwill Gem fashion, I went for something pretty but also practical, that I knew I would wear again and again and again!

thumb_IMG_8226_1024

These Kenneth Cole Reaction heels have slight platform for comfort and a super chic look, thanks to the skinny heels and understated linen upper. The neutral fabric that makes up most of this shoe isn’t as bright or wonderfully loud as the other colorful heels I spotted during my thrifting trip, but this is the kind of shoe that will go with absolutely everything in your spring and summer wardrobes! Plus, it was in almost perfect condition and looked like it had hardly been worn at all — serious Gem alert!

thumb_IMG_4875_1024

So, how to style this too-cute shoe? EASY. You could pair these babies with everything from fancy cocktail dresses to casual summer sundresses to a classic jeans-and-white-tee-shirt look. They’re incredibly versatile, which is what makes them such an insane bargain and lucky find! But here, I’ve chosen to pair these pretty heels with a bright yellow, breezy summer skirt (also found at Goodwill!) and a couple of layered gray and white tanks. Easy, cool, comfy and still totally cute, and adding my newly found heels will take this otherwise casual look up to a slightly more polished level.

Goodwill Gems: The Beyond-Basic Belt

Hello, friends and faithful fashionistas!

Today, I’m super psyched because I spotted a real Goodwill gem this week and now I get to share it with YOU!

And today, I have some serious truth telling to do, so I’m just going to come right out with it, straightaway: You’re not wearing enough belts.

What?! That might not be what you were expecting to hear, but trust me — however often you remember to throw one on before you race out the door, it’s probably not often enough. Belts can really be a girl’s best friend, and as basic as belts might seem, they’re an incredibly fast way to add instant shape and a dose of style to pretty much any look.

My latest gem of a find is a fantastic brown leather belt with a truly unique gold buckle detail that will really make it (and you!) stand out. The texture of the leather on this piece is almost like snakeskin, while the buckle is a double-sided piece that juts out from the middle at an angle, making its two sides look something like the two wings of a butterfly. It’s an awesome find that will add an intriguing bit of style to even the blandest of pieces in your wardrobe.

IMG_7892_edit

It looks kinda cool … but how do I wear this? Easily, is my response. Though you could definitely pop this fun accessory on with pretty much anything — jeans, boots, and a favorite tee, for example — it’s easy to take this too-cute belt to the next level and really show it off by using it to cinch the waist of a loose, flowing dress. As much as I’m all for comfy shapes that slide over the body in a flattering fashion (rather than tightly hugging your every curve), every stylish lady needs an ensemble that shows off her shape, and a fab belt like this one is an easy way to a slightly-too-big or just shapeless shift dress and give it an instantly polished and put together feel.

IMG_7890_edit

This simple, slouchy gray knit dress is ideal weekend wear, with it’s soft color and fabric, convenient pockets, and easy fit. But it becomes totally appropriate weekday attire when you pop on this pretty leather belt, along with a great pair of shoes like some knee-high leather boots!

Lauren’s Goodwill Gems – Say Hello to Spring!

It’s Time to Get In a Spring State of Mind!

Spring is in the air … well, sort of. We’ve been teased by a few days of warmer temperatures and a hint of sunshine, and now it’s hard to think about anything else. Soon, it’s gonna be spring. SO SOON!

There’s nothing more wonderfully uplifting and smile-inducing than the first hints of spring after a long winter. By the time mid-March rolls around, we’re all way more than ready to say hello to a new season – and with it, a new, lighter wardrobe.

This week’s fabulous find is a sweet pair of bejeweled flats – they’re a super cute, mod way to bring in the new season! These trendy fabric slip-ons are light and easy to wear – just the right fit for warmer weather. And the big, bold, clear gems are a fun way to add a little sparkle and sass to an otherwise simple and casual shoe.

IMG_7189
Looking for the right way to welcome the spring season? Look no further! These fantastic little flats are light, lovely, and walk a fun line between sporty and super feminine.

Being girly doesn’t have to mean heels. If you’re anything like me, you think high heels look awesome … on other people. Fabulously fashionable ladies walk the streets of NYC and other cities every day in crazy-high stilettos, strutting down the concrete sidewalk like it’s no big thing. But as much as I can appreciate how good a high heel looks on other ladies, I can’t always bring myself to wear them (hardly ever, if I’m really honest with you all here). So, a good pair of pretty flats is completely essential – especially in spring, when the weather is constantly changing!

So, what to pair with this polished-yet-casual pair of shoes? Honestly, another reason these are so great is because you can make them work just about any outfit this season. They’re cool and trendy, but not so wild that they won’t easily mesh with outfits you already own, like a pair of cropped jeans and classic white button up, or with a fun floral skirt and slouchy tee

001_edited
Polished but fun, feminine yet comfy and cool? You can have everything you want in a new spring shoe if you pick up a pair like this week’s Goodwill gem. They’ll go with everything in your wardrobe (promise!).

Here, I’ve chosen to pair my posh new flats with an outfit that’s insanely easy to wear no matter the time of year – if it’s warm enough, this ¾-sleeve blouse and soft gray slim-cut trouser can be worn on their own, but you could easily pop a blazer on top for an extra layer of warmth. The glitzy gray flats found at my local Goodwill take this ensemble to the next level – their feminine detail and shiny flair give this otherwise simple spring outfit an added burst of character.

The Kind of Jewelry Every Girl Needs to Own

Tried-and-true turquoise. There’s a reason turquoise jewelry keeps coming back, year after year, decade after decade. It never goes out of style because it looks gorgeous with basically everything – dressed up or down, wearing an off-the-wall pattern or a super-chic, all-black look, you’re guaranteed to look fabulous when you embellish your favorite ensembles with a bit of turquoise.

That’s why I was so excited to find this week’s gem in my local Goodwill thrift recently. This bold turquoise statement necklace is definitely for the girl who likes to make an entrance – but shouldn’t we all let ourselves be that girl from time to time? If you’re ready to purchase a daring accessory that you can still pair with classic pieces in your wardrobe, this eye-catching necklace is just right for you. The unusually shaped pieces and larger strand make this a truly eye-catching and extraordinary item, but the classic turquoise color makes it just as easy to wear with almost anything much-loved pieces you already own.

IMG_4874
Take classic and chic to a whole new level with this bold, brave accessory that manages to blend aspects of both timeless and modern jewelry for a truly one-of-a-kind find.

Don’t shy away from other bold pieces. Though you can certainly use a cool, funky piece like this one to dress up something super simple like a basic white tee – and it would look fantastic with one – don’t feel like you have to stick to only solid-colored clothes when looking for items to pair this accessory with. A necklace like this one – a fresh, playful take on an old classic, turquoise – can also be used alongside other equally funky, bright, and attention-grabbing outfits, like the striking black-and-white ensemble I’ve put together here. The vivid turquoise color of the necklace is sure to stand out against a form-fitting black sweater, but on the bottom, a fun skirt in a big, black-and-white houndstooth print brings another element with plenty of sassy confidence and visual interest.

001
Don’t shy away from more funky, bright or bold wardrobe pieces! While a fresh piece of turquoise jewelry like this week’s find is a great way to jazz up simple items of clothing, it’s also a great way to add a fun element to creative outfits featuring a mix of fearless prints, colors and patterns.

Lauren’s Goodwill Gems: Achieve Cold-Weather Cool

Looking good in the middle of winter is no easy feat. Dry skin, chapped lips, and the need for lots of layers and bulky, wooly clothes isn’t exactly a recipe for fashion fabulousness. But believe it or not, it IS possible to still look and feel great, even in the midst of the blizzard-like conditions we’ve been suffering through lately in the Tri-State area.

The secret? Stop fighting it. You can’t look or feel your best if you’re absolutely freezing cold, either, so it’s crucial to find a happy medium – clothes and accessories appropriate for winter conditions that still look cute. Do such pieces actually exist, you ask?

Yup, they so do. Take, for example, this sweet pair of sneaker booties (that’s a real kind of shoe, right?) spotted recently at my local Goodwill thrift shop. The thick rubber soles provide traction and protect feet from cold and snow. But the playful metallic detailing on the Velcro and tongue and shiny honeycomb-like pattern on the fabric uppers make these shoes not only comfy and practical, but also still incredibly fun to wear.

IMG_6266
Who says your winter wardrobe has to be drab? Take your cold-weather gear up a notch but purchasing a pair of shoes that’s both fun and totally fit for cold, wet winter weather.

Layer up the smart way. When it’s totally frigid and there’s two feet of snow outside, there’s no way to avoid wearing more than one layer of clothing – it’s just mandatory. But you can stay warm and cozy without feeling like a giant sweater monster. If you want to minimize bulkiness and still create a sleek look, even during the worst weather, first pile on a few layers of lighter, more form-fitting attire, like a tank and a t-shirt. Even though it’s not super heavy material, putting on more than one layer closer to the body will definitely help keep your toasty. Then, top off your ensemble with a chic, tailored blazer in a heavier fabric like wool or velvet to keep you snug, but still allow you to look like you have a shape! And when paired with some cool and casual high-top sneakers or booties like the ones I’ve found on my thrifting excursion this week, you’ve got a cold-weather appropriate outfit that’s still totally cool and on trend, and polished enough for a snowy day out on the town with friends or a necessary trek through tundra-like conditions to work. Either way, you’re ready for anything – and still looking completely adorable.

016
Keep your cool this winter by pairing fun, playful, but still-sturdy shoes like the ones I spotted this week at my local Goodwill with practical, layered outfit – basics topped with a sleek, fitted blazer are always an easy way to put together a totally polished and cozy ensemble.

Laurens Goodwill Gems: Start the New Year Off Bright

The holidays are over. Womp, womp. We’re well into January now, and the season of (often short-lived) resolutions, but that doesn’t mean it’s a time to be down in the dumps – especially when it comes to fashion.

January is actually the perfect time to give your closet a clean, get rid of all that old stuff that doesn’t fit or that you no longer wear, and start the year off fresh and fabulous. And of course, after you give your wardrobe a good sweep and discard all those pieces you no longer need, you’ll have plenty of space for a few new – very select – purchases. Keep the new pieces to a minimum – you just did all that hard work, after all – but go ahead and get a few new pieces to spruce up the well-worn, well-loved items you’ve still got – preferably, of course, new pieces that you’ll wear over and over again throughout the next year.

I was super pumped to find this simple, but oh-so-bright and fun belt at my local Goodwill thrift recently. It’s an accessory that can be worn nearly every day to bring a fresh burst of color to some of my winter wardrobe standbys – during a recent cleanout of my own closet, I’ve realized that I own a lot of gray, friends – like A LOT a lot. So a fun, whimsical accessory like this vibrant pink belt now feels like a must-have piece – it’s such an easy way to add a little boldness and eye-catching color to an otherwise drab winter look.

IMG_4870
Instantly brighten up those winter standbys with a fresh new belt, like this sleek waist-cincher in a vibrant pink hue.

Pop it on with go-to pieces. All those gray wardrobe go-to pieces I just mentioned? Well, this is one of them – a cozy knit gray dress with loose three-quarter sleeves and a sassy scoop neck – also, I might add, picked up at a thrift store a couple of years ago, and still one of my favorite things to wear! It’s perfect for chilly (but not totally frigid) winter days when you just want to throw something on with a comfy pair of boots and go, but still look like you put some effort into your attire. But it is, of course, gray – gray all over – and all that monochrome can start to feel a bit boring as the winter wears on and on. So, jazz up a favorite dress or other all-black or gray ensemble with a bright belt, like the one I found at my neighborhood thrift shop. It takes only seconds to pop it on over your existing outfit, but makes a huge difference in the overall look and feel of it – that spot of bright color will instantly lift your mood (and make your waist look extra tiny by cinching in all that extra fabric) – a win-win, for sure!

IMG_4871
Give beloved old outfits an easy, almost instant lift by adding one beautifully bright accessory, like this week’s gem – a pretty pink belt.
