Inside the Prop Closet with David

Welcome to our new series, Inside the Prop Closet, with our new blogger David Leon Morgan! He’s a creative entrepreneur, photographer and all-around incredible artist who sees inspiration everywhere. Check back every Friday for his latest adventures in thrifting and sourcing fabulous props for his photography studio from his fave local thrift — Goodwill NYNJ!

Photography, Poetry & Passion

I only had a few dollars to spend; being a full-time creative entrepreneur allows for rare splurges. Luckily, a beautiful thing about thrift store shopping is that creativity is often more valuable than money. And for an artist, creativity is the greatest tool there is.

So with my few dollars, I went to find little, essential somethings at my nearest thrift store. Years of owning too much stuff makes shopping trips a careful adventure, though. I only want to buy things I really love.

Luckily, this recent trip uncovered three lovely things: A denim vest, a printed baseball cap and a book of poetry by Stephen Dobyns.

Image4

Not only are these finds perfect additions to my wardrobe and book collection, they also make great photography props. For this reason, they’ll especially come in handy: I’m slowly carving out a tiny space for a photo studio in my tiny apartment. Right now, the nook is just a simple backdrop, select lighting equipment and basic camera tools. But my dream is to fill it with more creative props – fodder for endless imaginative happenings.

Image3

Goodwill is the perfect destination for imaginative props. Enter with an open heart – you never know what you’ll find. Buy selectively but adventurously. Think beyond what something is, and instead on what it could be.

And stay tuned to this blog, as each week I’ll share the things I find to add to my studio, and to things collection of things that articulates my poetic spirit, my creative passion and my unique place in the world.

Goodwill Gems: Mad for Bags!

Bags, Bags, Bags!

I am firmly of the belief that a fashionable lady can never (NEVER!) have too many handbags — which anyone who has followed this blog for any length of time is probably already very well aware of by now. But, in the spirit of spring cleaning — Goodwill NYNJ has a fabulous donation drive happening with Uber on Saturday, 5/21, if any of you all are in a similar spot! — and finally, finally getting my space in order, I am trying to pare down my pretty substantial accessory collection and only keep the items I really, truly need.

But of course, as soon as I resolved to not buy another item for at least a month, I spotted this beauty this Goodwill NYNJ’s Livingston St. store in Brooklyn!

IMG_8632

I mean, COME ON! A real-deal Marc Jacobs bag and it was marked at only $25! What a steal! It was in great shape (as you can clearly see) and also just happened to be in a palette of mixed neutrals — which, as you also know if you’ve been following this blog at all over the past few years, is pretty much everything I love.

Obviously, I could not say no.

But, I’m justifying this fabulous purchase by getting rid of other things I already own and don’t wear as much — and I can feel good about doing that now, because this beautiful bag is going to go with absolutely everything.

With a cute white tee and cool black shades (my go-to summer combo!)? Check.

With a sleek, chic floral sundress, just right for a fancy summer night out? Check.

With a too-cool-for-school look like this combo of trendy poncho, old sneakers and lacey mini? Check.

Basically, there’s nothing this fabulous bag wouldn’t complement or look incredibly awesome with. And that’s the whole point right? Clean out your closets of all the things you don’t use just sitting there, collecting dust — if you’re in the five boroughs, I highly recommend taking advantage of our Uber promo and getting a FREE donation pickup this Saturday, 5/21! Then, buy fewer, but way more beautiful things (like this gorgeous thrifted purse!) that you’ll love for years and wear again, and again … and again.

Goodwill Gems: Spring Bling!

A Very Glam Way to Step Into the Spring Season

YOU GUYS!!! It seems that spring is finally, seriously, REALLY here — for real this time! After a brief tease with sunshine and nice weather a couple of months ago and then cold, cold, COLD, we’re finally seeing some sunshine and warmer temps once again.

IMG_8667

To celebrate the arrival (finally!) of truly beautiful spring weather, I’m going all out this week with my accessorizing! Can you tell? I found some serious bling at GoodwillNYNJ‘s Livingston Street store in Brooklyn last week and I am SO excited to wear it out!

This gorgeous and spectacularly sparkly piece caught my eye right when I was walking up to the register to check out (all the jewelry is in the case up front, if you’re not familiar with this location). I was actually attending a very special fashion show event for Goodwill Week 2016 (which was oodles of fun!) and, of course, had to do a little shopping after the show while the store was still open. I instantly spotted a few things I just couldn’t live without and was running to the register to prevent myself from doing anymore damage to my bank account (not my closet, clearly!), when I saw this out of the corner of my eye … whoops. But how could I say no to this incredibly awesome find!?

IMG_8668

It’s a little heavy-duty for everyday wear, but this is the kind of necklace you can really rock on a night out with girlfriends or on a date night with your sweetie. Made up of striking silver chains, the basic metallic links are embedded with two rows of pretty rhinestones in different sizes for an extra, eye-catching touch of detail. It’s shimmery and will easily catch the light, whether you’re out during the daytime or at night in your fave club, bar or restaurant. But since it’s all silver with nearly clear, grayish stones of a similar hue, it’s not too loud or garish — just classy as can be!

thumb_IMG_4878_1024

You could easily sport this pretty accessory with a flowy, fabulous cocktail dress and heels for a fancier occasion. But here, I’ve opted to pair it with an ensemble I’d typically wear on a night out on the town with friends — something cute, comfy and easy to dance in!

On the bottom (though I know it’s a little hard to see here), I’ve got some saucy faux-leather leggings that look fantastic with boots, heels or flats, which makes them the perfect pant for pretty much any evening out in the city. On top, some loose-fitting, flowy layered tanks — a plain white one underneath and a lighter, gauzy coral one on top (which, btw, was thrifted from the same Goodwill store!).

And it’s really that easy — a slightly funky, edgier pant, a pretty, brightly colored top, and my glitzy new necklace, and I’m ready for a fun and exciting night out in the absolutely lovely, balmy spring weather!

@PlanetBrandee Goes Vintage!

@PlanetBrandee Goes Vintage!

_____

Hey, girl, hey! Full Circle Skirts. Corsets. High Heels for Grown Ups.

We’ve chatted in the past about our mutual love for thrifted vintage, from tweeds, to disco to floral and back, so this week, as a special departure from my usual travel series, I’m bringing you a sweet and romantic glance at vintage! We all know wedding season is coming (tell me you aren’t buried in invites = not going to believe it!). So grab that waist cincher, a classy shade of red lipstick and let’s get vintaged!

Intro: STAY CLASSY.

Question: When will this Kardashed damnation of hyper-countoured terrifyingly cake faced nonsense of the makeup world ever end?

Answer: Technically, anytime the real ladies are ready to give it a go!

SO: let’s keep it classy okay? Put down that cliched selfie stick and learn to line those lips with something other than matte eggshell #135! Grab a crimson classic red, go deep and bright, and top it with rosy cheeks and a classically shaped Monroe inspired brow.

Question: What is considered a “classic” vintage shape?

Answer: EVERY shape is classic if you groom it right! Vintage knows no shape!

Although iconic Monroe hourglass is always a good way to go, there’s SO many ways to style a figure! Play it one-style-fits-all and stick to classic pencil skirts, or flouncy bow tops. Kick it up a Gal Friday notch with some heels and make yourself a wedding guest night to remember!

pic-2

SO who’s ready to be the next Audrey or Marilyn? Are you a #vintage maven? Snap a pic and share it with me for a chance to be featured here next week! And stay tuned for my next #travel #adventure which has me going to a new destination, but shhhh, that’s STILL, (yes STILL!), a secret for now!

Makespace + GoodwillNYNJ

Makespace + GoodwillNYNJ = The Perfect Partnership!

We are very excited to share that the partnership between MakeSpace and Goodwill is still in place — and we’re working together better than ever to help you get rid of the clothing you no longer need or wear!

image002

If you’ve never used Makespace before, here’s what you need to know: Makespace is a company that makes storing your stuff easy by offering pickups, delivery and free reusable storage bins. When you schedule your first free empty MakeSpace bin drop-off, you will receive a shiny blue MakeSpace + Goodwill bag included. While you pack your bins, toss any unwanted items you’d like to donate to Goodwill in the bag. Then hand it to the MakeSpace Upload Team when they pick up your bins. They will take care of the rest.

That’s how simple it is to make your home feel bigger, brighter and cleaner — and contribute to making the world a better place at the same time!

Your donations make an enormous impact — when you donate to Goodwill, you not only get rid of things you no longer need. You create jobs and enhance the lives of families living in your community.

You also have a positive impact on the environment. Last year, Goodwill NYNJ helped residents keep more than 117 million pounds of unwanted goods out of local landfills.
