How To: Re-Make NY Fashion Week at Your Local Goodwill

With the New York Fashion Week cat-walking right into London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks, this month is filled to the brim with style. One of our favorite bloggers (and past Goodwill Disability Mentoring Day Fashion Show stylist) Kimberlee Van Der Wall of IHaveADegreeInThis! breaks down the trends into a Goodwill-filled how-to. Enjoy!

The fantastic Kimberlee Van Der Wall takes on Fashion Week around the world, rocking the runway at her local Goodwill.

February marks fashion week season here in New York and all the great major fashion cities around the world. This season showed influences from ‘70s psychedelic, ‘60s mod and the Great Gatsby’s 1920s. Fashion works in a cycle so what’s old will eventually become new again, which is great news for all us thrifters out there.

Here are three runway looks that you could easily recreate with pieces from your local Goodwill store:

Houndstooth is a classic print that never goes out of style. Invest in a great jacket for the fall!

It’s all about layers for the fall – mix ‘n match colors and prints for a bold look.

Don’t be afraid to try wearing pieces in different ways. Case in point: This oversized sweater dress is layered with a long skirt and belted to maintain your shape.

If we learned anything from these looks it’s invest in some black leather/pleather gloves. Head to your local Goodwill store so you can be runway ready when these fashion trends hop the runway and take the town next season!

Donate to Goodwill & Make a Difference Today

February and March are two tough months. The cold weather seems endless, the skies are grey, and staying true to those resolutions is less fun than ever. February and March are also the toughest month for our donations – but we can work together to change this. Together we can perk up winter.

Please donate today - you will make a difference!

We’ll be honest: right now we’re in real need of donations (clothes, electronics, household items, etc.). By now, you know that donations are critical to our programs – what you donate fills our stores, and the proceeds from our stores then funds our programs. All of this means job creation, youth services, veterans events, back-to-work programs, and more. But it all starts with your donations.

Please add a donation trip to your schedule this month. You can drop your donations at any of our stores or donation centers during open hours. Your do-good deed will brighten your life, lighten your clutter load, and help change someone else’s bleak and hungry winter. Together we can do a lot of good – you, your donations, us, and those in need. Together we can make this Spring greener than ever. Thank you!

Goodwill Gems: The Gold Cuff

Winter wearing you down? Once you’ve found your outerwear at our Goodwill Mardi Gras Sale, turn up the fun with some glimmering, shimmering wrist candy. There’s nothing like a shiny trinket to catch the eye and quicken the pulse – at least, not if you’re our correspondent Lauren. All that glitters is a go with this week’s Goodwill Gem: the Gold Cuff.

This gold cuff is simple, but it makes a statement. And lately, to me, making a statement, in whatever way possible, feels like the right thing to do. Maybe I’ve spent too many months all covered up, or maybe I’m just sick of winter’s grey, but whatever the reason, I’ve been in the mood to add a bit of shine and color to everyday looks, even if in a small way.

This simple, timeless gold cuff will make any outfit look more sophisticated in seconds.

This week’s gem – a simple, gleaming gold cuff – is an elegant way to do just that. The clean, modern lines and lack of sparkle (or any other distracting details) makes this an easy piece to wear day in and day out. It’s a shot of instant glamor, but doesn’t look gaudy or require anything else of an outfit in order to give you that sensational touch. This isn’t a super trendy piece you’ll put away after a season or a year; this is the kind of bracelet you’ll want to keep at the top of your jewelry drawer for years to come.

You could wear an uncomplicated accessory like this one with anything from a frilly cocktail dress to jeans and a t-shirt. In fact, it’s a great piece to pair with those fail-safe pieces that get lots of wear – the kinds of pieces that do double or even triple duty in your wardrobe, the kind you wear to work, then for cocktails, then to a date or a special event.

This near-monochromatic look begs for the glamor and shine of a simple, striking gold cuff.

Here, I’ve set the canvas for success, adding the gold cuff to a basic background of black leggings and knit tunic. Notice those bright gold buttons – a subtle way to echo the metallic gleam of my bracelet somewhere else in the ensemble. With a pair of classic high-heeled black booties to complete the look, I have an effortlessly chic outfit I can wear almost anywhere.

Do you have a pick-me-up trinket you love? Come tell us in the comments here, post a photo of a fav look on our Facebook page or send @GoodwillNyNj a tweet. GoodwillNyNj & I love seeing your style, so keep us posted!

Goodwill Gems: Spring Vacation Bracelet

Winter’s in the air, but Spring is on the way. Is your wardrobe ready? Our correspondent Lauren bundles up to treasure hunt at her local Goodwill for soon-to-be-seasonal finds. With a good eye and a sense of coming sunshine, she happened to capture this week’s Goodwill Gem, a gem that radiates sunshine adventures in and of itself: the Spring Vacation Bracelet.

Bedazzled with everything from jagged turquoise to smooth pearls, this beautifully bedecked bracelet will add a touch of carefree, summery style to any outfit, no matter the time of year.

We’ve been lucky to have a very (very) mild winter this year, certainly by the usual East Coast standards. But finally, in mid-February, it feels like winter has hit, with a wind blowing and flurries in the mix. Funny, though, this belated jump into real winter weather has only gotten me thinking about the fast-approaching spring. And with those things on my mind, how could I pass up this week’s find?
