Have a Ghoulishly Great (and Guilt-Free!) Halloween

Halloween is almost here! And with the holiday taking place on a Friday this year, there are guaranteed to be some all-out fabulous, over-the-top parties in every part of the city.

I absolutely love Halloween, but the one thing I don’t love about this fiendishly fun holiday is the cost of it – adult costumes (even the cheaply made ones) usually run upwards of $50, especially if you’re adding accessories or special costume makeup to your look. And of course, you’re probably never going to wear any of it again – who wants to repeat the same costume year after year? Luckily, your favorite local thrift is actually the perfect place to shop for fantastic costumes on the cheap, and this year, I’m going to show you how to shop smart for a standout accessory or two, add to clothes you’ve already got in your wardrobe, and pull together one frightfully good Halloween look!

This week’s find is pretty unbelievable – a stunningly authentic-looking Chanel handbag! The beautiful black quilted leather purse is slightly damaged underneath, but gold chain and leather straps, iconic front logo clasp and interior are all in perfect shape, so at $5, this was still an absolutely crazy steal.

authentic-looking Chanel handbagThis pretty purse, will, believe me, become part of a costume, but it’s also a darling bag to carry around town any day of the week. A win-win!

Use a newfound accessory to create a character. The moment I saw this bag, with Halloween on my mind, of course, my mind immediately went to one of my all-time favorite characters in cinema history – Miss Holly Golightly. Audrey Hepburn’s portrayal of her in the classic film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, is one I never get tired of watching, and with a beautiful, ladylike bag like this week’s Goodwill find, there really isn’t much else you need to pull Holly’s memorable look together. To the purse, I added an item every lady should have in her wardrobe already – a knee-length black cocktail dress, which is reminiscent of the dress Holly wears in many scenes when she’s about town or heading to the prison to visit her friend, Sally Tomato. If you’re feeling extra lucky, keep shopping around your local Goodwill for a large, wide-brimmed black hat – no one will mistake who you’re meant to be with that on. After that, all this look needs to be completely polished and complete is a swipe of deep red lipstick – and maybe a pair of alligator shoes, darling.

all black outfitPull a festive, totally fun Halloween ensemble together with pieces you already have in your closet – and a few choice accessories, of course.

Can You Shop Out of the Corner of Your Eye?

Last week, I took my Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) students to the Chelsea Goodwill Boutique. The field trip was a study in comparison and contrast as well as an opportunity to teach them the beautiful things you find when thrifting. As I spoke to my students about identifiable marks of vintage and determining thrift from vintage, I saw a very pretty print out of the corner of my eye. That’s the thing, I sort of have radar-like vision when I’m shopping and nothing beautiful gets away from me. I wasn’t even in the mood to buy, I was really in educator mode and well, I honestly can’t do both at the same time. Or so I thought.

Betsey Johnson silk dressThis Betsey Johnson silk multi-print number is what we thrifters like to call a Gold Mine. It is a very one-of-a-kind, made by a well-known designer, it is in pristine condition and is composed of great print and fabric – jackpot! Although, it wasn’t vintage, I give it no more than four years max since it hit retail, the dress was still a great purchase.

“You can find a great buy anywhere, just open the corner of your eye and watch all the amazing pieces that come to you,” I explained to my students.

Sassy, Studded Accessory Perfection

Studs aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. I know they’ve been on the fashion scene for awhile now, but they’re still popping up everywhere you look, and for good reason – they’re a simple, slightly edgy way to add some unique flair to a look, in a surprisingly understated way.

If you’re looking for a new, go-to piece you can wear with all your favorite outfits throughout the year, then look no further. This week’s fantastically versatile Goodwill gem is a seriously lucky find for the thrifty shopper, because it can literally be worn with absolutely anything. A brown leather belt is, of course, a staple item in any woman’s wardrobe, but this piece – covered in a shimmering rainbow of metallic studs – adds a bit of edgy glam to your everyday looks without going overboard. The variety of metals used will complement all sorts of different colors and makes this accessory easy to wear on an almost-daily basis. It’s an accessory you’ll go to again and again, and it’ll look fresh every time – a real bargain for the girl looking for a few functional, adaptable, but still fashionable pieces.

metallic studs on beltPractical doesn’t ever have to mean to boring. This incredibly interesting piece can work like a staple in any lady’s wardrobe, but the cool metallic studs give it a sharp, slightly glamorous feel.

Liven up a lovely (but basic) dress. Though obviously you can pair a pretty studded leather belt like this one with nearly anything, but here, I’ve chosen to put it on top of soft, grayish-blue sweater dress that’s perfect for fall. This knee-length staple would look great with a pair of classic leather riding boots, and my fabulous new find – a metallic studded belt with just enough shimmer – instead of a plain brown belt, is an ideal way to energize an otherwise basic ensemble. And because the studs are done in an array of different metals – gold, rose gold, silver, and black – it’s incredibly easy to coordinate an item like this with absolutely any piece of jewelry you might want to wear with it.

charcoal dressEffortlessly give all your everyday looks – like this sweet, feminine sweater dress – a touch of refined glamor and a bit of fun with a cool, colorful pair of shoes.

PlanetBrandee LIVE from Philadelphia!

PlanetBrandee LIVE From PhiladelphiaRunning up the stairs chanting the rocky theme song, meeting someone who was in that same iconic film scene AND binge watching everything’s sunny in Philadelphia, ALL of this more awaits you my faithful readers as this week I write to you from the halls of history, liberty and brotherly love in Philadelphia.

As in all of my treks, I like to hammer out hot eats, great fashion and local culture vibes. So let’s jump right in!

Blending old with new

Fuel up with PHILLY EATS

Reading Terminal Market is a fellow not-for-profit organization brimming with spectacular finds. Its website includes a host of events: “Mouth-watering aromas; Locally grown and exotic produce; Amish specialties; Fresh meats, seafood, and poultry; Handmade confections and baked goods straight from the oven; Everything you need to create a memorable meal – from cookbooks to table linens, kitchen ware, fresh cut flowers, and more. Plus, the widest variety of restaurants under one roof, find it all here at Philadelphia’s historic public market, Reading Terminal Market.” I personally scored Amish honey and a bowl of Gumbo that would make a grown Cajun cry with joy.

Get curated with PHILLY STYLE

The Philly vintage arena is a scene to be reckoned with. Here I am, looking at you Jazz Age New Yorkers. Philly’s Goodwill, and a host of other resourceful second-hand shops allow locals and visitors to find gems like the raw silk chemise (Jil Sander people) for $9.99 and high waisted pencil skirt by D&G for $24.99. It’s a Philly miracle!

Last stop: PHILLY ARCHITECTURE

historical architectureThere are so many Instagram worthy shots in this gem of a city. It was difficult not to create an entire post about only the historical and architecture elements. Take a look at the photos here, and if you’re in town give yourself at least a few hours to cruise reading terminal, grab a coffee, and then get lost on the streets. Especially during fall, the area near Manayunk is spectacular. Fierce, brilliant reds and golds burst across the riverside. And if you get a chance to kayak as I did, it’s a breathtaking experience. As I snuggle up to this sexy cheese steak (WHAT? Like I could blog about Philly and NOT mention cheese steaks lol!) I think back on the local influences I’ve met, talented Tom of Philly Blind Pig BBQ (brisket you’d street fight for.), the melodic voice of The Pilot, The Driver at Dawson’s Street Pub, (old-school style you need to visit at least once while in town), and numerous other artists and creative social making Philly a great escape. Making a life traveling, eating and finding ways to blend fashion, culture and local flavor is a blessing. And as I take out my November travel itinerary, make the most of it is exactly what I plan to do!

Join me next blog as my November travel journeys from runway to highway continue to fuel my search for the best food, fun and fashion the world can offer. Till then, see you on the streets. Follow the adventures on Twitter, #planetbrandee #fashion #NYC
