DIY Fall Decor

Fall Decor- Glassware.png

An excellent way to update your home this fall season is by merely adding a few glassware around the house. Goodwill carries a variety of glass in the home decor section. You can find from new and modern pieces to unique and vintage pieces. To make the glassware more appealing add your favorite fall theme candle, go outside and add some leaves or a few baby pumpkins.

Fall Decor- Table Setup

An excellent way to impress your guest this fall season is by having a topnotch table set for Thanksgiving. Though table setups and fine china can be pricey, I can assure you that you can find something affordable and with good quality at Goodwill.

Fall Decor- Picture Frames

Adding a few picture frames around the house brings back old memories. And a great way to update the basic picture frame is by adding a couple of artificial flowers, bows, leaves. You can find a wide selection of pre-owned and vintage picture frames at your local Goodwill and recreate one of these picture frames.

Fall Decor- Pillows.png

Pillows are a great way to add some color to your old and slouchy couch. This fall season be creative and do it yourself. I’ve done this in the past and have easily added some twine, iron-on patches and have refurbished my old pillows. These go great on your living room sofa or bed.

A little imagination and little craft skills are all it takes to redecorate this autumn season. Any other craft ideas? Leave them in the comments below.

13 Essential Autumn Accessories To Fall For

As the summer winds down and the smell of pumpkin spice lattes begins to penetrate the air, we are more than ready to say goodbye to this sweltering heat and begin transitioning our wardrobes.

From layers to hats to boots and everything in between, revamping your autumn closet can feel a little overwhelming. You may ask yourself, what do I really need? But fear not! Goodwill is here to help! Here are 13 basic fall essentials to mix and match throughout the season:

The most important thing to remember when the seasons are changing is to keep warm. When it’s too cold for a T-shirt but too warm for a coat, a cozy wrap can go a long way.

The poncho is a comfortable and comforting piece that looks great on everyone and tends to cover all the right areas. A sleeveless poncho is also easy to whip on and off as the temperature demands, making it the ultimate autumn essential.

The cape is great both in terms of warmth and versatility, and if you’re a fan of layers this piece is perfect for you. Capes are back big time for autumn 2018, as spotted on fashion week runways and are the perfect addition to your autumn wardrobe.

The oversized shawl/scarf is the perfect solution for unpredictable and changing weather. Easy to put on and to take off, it also fits perfectly in your bag and around your neck, making it a particularly versatile piece.

Autumn means having to navigate a lot of temperamental weather. From winds to rain, you need to make sure that you’ve got something to cover your head and protect that fresh ‘do. Here are our recommendations:

The fedora hat truly is an autumn staple. Slick and stylish, the fedora completes any outfit and works great both during the day and at night. The best thing about the fedora hat is that it goes with just about anything, from a party to picnic and anything in between, ensuring that you stay warm, dry and fashionable.

When in doubt, wear a beanie hat! Ideal for windy weather, this timeless classic is guaranteed t keep you (and you ears!) nice and warm. This is also a classically stylish look that’s perfect for casual outings and even your commute to work.

Favored by the likes of Queen Elisabeth II and the renowned designer Richard Quinn, the simple scarf is another iconic staple that belongs with the rest of your must-have autumn accessories, perfect for keeping you dry, warm and always stylish.

Oversized bags are your best friend, especially during autumn, when you’re constantly taking things on and off. Here are three fun options for you to play around with, perfect for every occasion.

The oversized metallic tote is ideal for walking around the city or going to college or work. Simple and stylish, you can fit quite a lot in a tote. Whether it’s your poncho or your subway read, it’s the simple and comfortable bag is there for you when you need it most.

As autumn approaches, so does rain season, which means that you’ve got to figure out a way to keep your things dry. You can swap out your work tote for a work ready backpack, which will save you the hassle of the juggling too many things at once and keeping all of your valuables nice and dry.

A cute crossbody bag is the perfect autumn accessory ideal for a night out. Something big enough to fit all of your basics (phone, keys, cash etc.) but small enough to not get in your way.

Screen Shot 2018-09-18 at 11.49.12 AM.png

Gold is the color of the season and nothing perks up a plain T or a simple sweater like a classic piece of statement jewelry. You can opt for either gold or copper to dress up any outfit, whether you’re going to work or to party.

One of the best things about autumn is all the accessories! Have fun and dress up your new layered wardrobe with an assortment of fun, funky ornaments to further dress up up your outfit.

Screen Shot 2018-09-18 at 12.03.45 PM.png

When it’s cold and windy out and you’ve got no choice but to throw that hat on or put your hair up in a bun, throw on a cool pair of dangly earrings to spice up your look!

It’s not gloves season yet! And until it is, you can catch us sporting a cool and casual assortment of rings to keep our look funky and fresh.

Adaptive Fashion- How important is inclusivity and diversity in the fashion industry?

AGoodLook profile pic Jennifer Panchi| Goodwill NYNJ

New York Fashion Week is one of the most anticipated fashion events of the year. While Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Kai Gerber make their way down the runway, something is missing in those garments, Inclusivity. Although the world of fashion is full of glamour and charm, there is indeed not a lot of representation for all. For as long history can remember disabled individuals had been restricted from fashion.

Adaptive Clothing Article Cover (1)

In recent years many fashion brands have taken on the responsibility of providing style for those with physical disabilities because who says individuals with physical disabilities can’t be stylish? And big name brands that have taken on the leadership include Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, Target and many more because if you think not fitting into your vintage Levis is a struggle imagine not being able to wear any jeans out on the market. This is the case for individuals with Cerebral Palsy, Prosthetics, Down syndrome, and much more. For this reason and more Tommy Hilfiger created “Tommy Adaptive” with these individuals in mind. Adaptive clothing means using Velcro, magnetic buttons, and elastic bands for jeans instead of the traditional zippers and bottoms which are difficult for many people with Cerebral Palsy.

Other brands include Nike with the creation of the Nike Fly Ease sneaker. A sneaker that makes it easy to put on, by just sliding your foot from the back of the shoe and shutting the zipper as opposed to shoving your foot in and then tying the shoelaces.

Nike FlyEase

Another brand designing for individuals with physical disabilities in mind is Billy Footwear. This footwear company specializes in providing high quality and high comfort for kids with special physical needs, with cool and edgy designs no kid has to ever has to pass out on a trend.

If clothing can boost someone’s confidence imagine what adaptive clothing can do for an individual with a physical disability. This is why adaptive fashion is highly important in the fashion industry. And one that is making sure everyone feels empowered is Bezgraniz Couture creating garments that are gender non-conforming and accessible to everyone regardless of size and ability. From the selection of the fabric to the styling, everything is thought out to fit anyone.

Other brands specializing in adaptive apparel include

  • -Silverts
  • -Able2Wear
  • -Care+wear
  • -NBZ Clothing
  • -Etsy
  • -Izzy Camilleri Adaptive Clothing
  • -Plae
  • -and much more

Fashion has no rules; therefore, fashion should not restrict anyone no matter age, gender, size, ability or financial status and these brands are making sure that no one misses out.

Bathing Suit: From Beach to Brunch w/@thefabjunkie

Suma KaulThe Fab Junkie

Ok, I have to be honest…. I’m not a beachy type of person, but I do love the water. Well, small bodies of water. Being that I don’t spend my summer days lounging out on the beach, owning bathing suits really wasn’t a thing for me. BUT when I heard Goodwill is carrying NWT suits- I HAD TO GET ONE (especially being that they were only $7.99). Ok, I bought two……

I live a pretty minimal lifestyle, so even my bathing suit has to do double duty work for me. I want to be able to take my pool/lakeside look and go out to brunch with my friends or even run some errands. If I can do that, then I don’t have to run home and change. Which simplifies my life.

Here are 5 Tips to Transition your Suit from BEACH to BRUNCH!

Find a suit you love (Duh). I like to wear one piece because I feel that they fit my body type the best but two-piece suits work also. Think crop top + high waisted mom jeans.

• You want to style it with something you are comfortable in. I’m my most comfortable in a flowing material- I paired my suit with a pair of culottes. Easy transition; they slide right over my suit and didn’t take up much room in my bag.

• Shoes complete your look and pull it together. Stay away from flip-flops. The point is to move away from the “I was just at the beach look.” Pair your look with a sandal or strappy heel. I picked my chunky heels because they’re so comfortable and I had A LOT of walking to do.

• FINALLY: add some cute accessories or a structured bag. It will add a chic summer feel.

Stop by your local Goodwill to check out their line of Bathing Suits that they’re carrying while supplies last! All bathing suits are NEW with TAGS attached. Don’t forget to tag Goodwill in all your finds + looks!

Festival Style: DIY Fringe Skirt w/ @thefabjunkie

It’s HERE! Festival Season. This time of year is always so much fun. The weather gets warmer, the skin starts to show and the music gets louder. I love attending summer concerts. I always have a few lined up to attend with my bestie. Being that you can always play it up when you’re attending outdoor shows, I have the perfect DIY for you! Fringe is always in and I love showing it off in the hot weather months. Check out this easy peasy DIY!

First, you want to find a skirt with as much stretch in it. Something that’s made mostly of cotton because cotton stretches nicely and it’s a breathable fabric. I found this black skirt at Goodwill for about $7.

FringeSkirtDIYCollage (3)

Next, find a skirt in YOUR closet with a length you like.

Then, start your first cut. I used my thumb as a guide for the width of the strips.

DO NOT rush the cuts. If you rush, the strips WILL be crooked (trust me).

After you complete the cuts, you can hang it on a hanger and make sure your length is accurate. I fixed mine a bit because it was super crooked (because I rushed).

Now go rock your new ON TREND Fringy Goodness!

DIY: Denim DIY Vest w/ @thefabjunkie

What’s a better way to upcycle an old denim jacket you ask? Oh, I will tell you! Turn that bad boy into a denim vest you can rock all year round!  I feel like everyone owns a denim jacket and if I’m wrong… lucky for YOU Goodwill has you covered. I picked up this 90’s Anne Klein jacket a couple of years ago from Goodwill. As you can see, I’ve already shredded it and put my touch on it. It has been sitting in the back of my closet (because this year I thrifted another denim jacket. I know, I have a denim problem) so I decided I would revamp it a bit. What I like about this jacket is that it has a boxy shape. Check out this easy peasy Denim DIY!

Step 1: Find a denim jacket that is a bit oversized on you.

DenimDIYVest2 (2)

Step 2: You’re going to use the seam line as your guide to cut. AND don’t forget your scissors.

DenimVestDIY3 (2)

GoodwillDenimDIYVestCollage (2)

Step 3: START CUTTING! I started RIGHT where the seam meets which can be a little hard to cut through. You can start anywhere on the sleeve using the seam to guide you.

Step 4: Once you get your initial cut through, you’re going to want to separate the fabric and continue to cut. When you hold the fabric together you tend to get an uneven cut. It’s fixable BUT why waste time?

Step 5: You can flip the jacket over on its front side to do the back part of the sleeve. Once again, I do this because I want the cleanest cut possible in one shot.

Step 6: Repeat on the opposite side!
