Shop Goodwill allows you to scroll through an immense selection of vintage pieces. DIY Slit Knee Denim

By Suma Kaul, thefabjunkie.com

When you’re in love with all things denim, you always try to think of new DIYs to create. Currently trending in the world of denim is the Slit Knee. The difference between this and other shredded denim style is that there’s just a subtle rip that lies directly on the knee.

Crafting as a Form of Healing: This Week on Inside the Prop Closet

Last week, I unexpectedly fell in love with making tassels. They’re so easy to make – all you need is yarn, a thick, rectangular piece of something to wrap the yarn around, an embroidery needle and scissors. They look so charming on so many things: pillows, keychains and, in my case, apartment walls.

Get in the habit of Color

Just because it’s August doesn’t mean Summer is over just yet! I’ve still got the urge to sport my summer brights and nothing will stop me. Not the  back-to-school ads or the presence of Fall leaves as decor in the shops. There is one Fall color that I am happy make nice with– yellow.

Style Evolutions: This Week on Inside the Prop Closet

The Uniform

Image1 (4)
My style has gone through a few evolutions in the past, but none as drastic as this year’s change. Maybe it was because I took a leap of faith in January, leaving a full-time job to start life as a freelance entrepreneur. Maybe it was because I was going to the gym regularly, and my old clothes fit me differently. Or maybe it was a combination of both.

Regardless of the reason, earlier this year I donated a large portion of my wardrobe to various thrift stores and primarily opted for three basic pieces, instead: white T-shirts, jeans and boots. It’s classic, it’s simple, it’s utilitarian — everything about this uniform fits where I am right now.

Up until this point, I was obsessed with color and patterns. My closet was one eclectic gumbo, which fit the creative nature of my life. But things change, sometimes suddenly. I’m still wildly creative, but more streamlined, pointed, minimal. Creative entrepreneurship requires a focus that I’m still grasping. And that focus isn’t just limited to office hours — everything in my life needs to speak to it.

But I’ve always been one to unabashedly wear my genuine personality on my sleeves. I’m still doing that, and could never give that up. It just so happens that right now, thrift store shopping trips often end up with a few T-shirts and vintage jeans. Tomorrow, it could be different. Who knows? That’s the great thing about fashion: It’s as fluid as you let it.

Multi-Functional Thrift Store Finds

3 Smart Ways to Use a Picture Frame (Besides for Pictures!)

One of the things I always look for when I’m thrift shopping is picture frames. These little beauties are great for displaying my cherished moments, yes, but I love them for more than that. In trying to DIY our home by renovating thrift store finds, and I’ve found picture frames to be one of the most versatile tools around. They can do so much for your home, and the best part is that they’re the perfect item for all skill levels! Here are three of my favorite uses:

1. Create Wainscoting on Your Wall

IMG_0340

Revamp your walls by using picture frames as a quick and easy way to create a wainscoting effect, like Charming Zebra did with this super easy method. You can even go one step further and add thin plywood sheets first, so that you’ll have a fully paneled wall, which Centsational Girl did.

2. Create a Centerpiece for Your Table

One of my favorite ways to use picture frames is for a quick and easy centerpiece for my coffee and dining tables. The simplest way I’ve found is to spray the glass of the frame with spray paint (“looking glass” is my personal favorite), paint the frame, and add candles or decorations to the “mirror” once they’ve dried.

3. Turn a Drab Door into a Paneled Beauty

paneled-door

This is one of my all-time favorite hacks to a more beautiful home, and it’s so easy! It seems we’re constantly cursed with the flat, boring builder-grade doors, but thanks to this amazing idea I’m now ready to turn our doors into something much more elegant.

Updating your home’s aesthetic with picture frames isn’t just relegated to family photos any longer! Try one of these three ideas the next time you pick up a set of frames on your next thrifting spree and show us your work!
