Bringing Classy Back

Sure, all we’re thinking about now is the perfect party dress.

Christmas and Hanukkah are over (and so is Kwanza, almost), New Year’s Eve is almost here, and most of us are shopping for brilliant, sparkling bling and assessing our shoe collection to see if, maybe this year, we finally own something that’s glamorous and that we can stand in until that ball drops at midnight.

But all those fancy clothes, while very pretty, are also usually very comfortable. Which is why, at this very moment, I’m not thinking about sequined party dresses and sky-high stilettos. No, I’ve already had just about enough of all that, and especially after so many massive holiday meals, all I’m looking forward to is New Year’s Day – when the parties will be over, and I can relax in something comfy and maybe meet a good friend or two for brunch. And that’s why I was so spectacularly pleased to find this week’s darling find – this casual but bright gem of a bag – at my local Goodwill thrift shop this week. This purse is the perfect piece to start off a new year with – a vibrant shade of coral, this fabric bag is soft and flexible. So, not only will the lively hue brighten all those blah January days ahead, but the sack can easily expand a bit to hold absolutely everything you might need as you try to jump back into the swing of things after a relaxing holiday break.

IMG_4096In a laid-back style and beautiful bright coral color, this bag is just what every stylish girl needs to start the new year off right!

Get on your go-to weekend wear.

If New Year’s Eve is all about partying like a rock star, then New Year’s Day needs to be all about recovering like one. To go with my charming, perfect-for-weekend-brunch bag, I’ve chosen a favorite, and well worn-in, pair of stretchy black pants and a totally cozy gray tee with a funky, graphic pattern. It’s not even remotely fancy, but the bold graphic print and asymmetrical cut on the tee-shirt still makes this outfit a little fun – without making it feel like too much work. On top of all that, what I have long since deemed my “grandpa sweater,” aka an extra-long, extra-soft gray cardigan that makes every outfit feel just that much cozier. It’s cute, comfortable, and perfect for a relaxed weekend post-partying, but it is a bit on the dark side, which is why this week’s gem is the perfect accessory to jazz it up!

IMG_4820Effortlessly cool and oh-so-comfortable, this easy style is ideal for the day after serious partying, when you want nothing more than peace, quiet, and a casual midday meal with friends.

A Lesson This Festive Season

Hand with heartThis time of the year can be very festive but for many it can also be one of sadness. As we are bombarded with images of family and home for the holidays, there are many people whom don’t have that. So as we shop around for everyone on our list and run to get presents, let’s take the time out to reach out to friends whom we may have lost contact with this year. Invite them to tea or coffee. Don’t isolate your single friends for couple’s only events, or your friends who are single parents. Think of everyone on equal footing with varying circumstances. Your gift for the busy parent, take their kids off their hands and head to a cool event. You friend who had a rough year, brunch and sprint them off to a massage.

Some of us can also take the time out to thank those we see in passing. Our local merchants, the neighbor who takes our packages, give them a token of appreciation a warm note saying thank you for everything this year.

There are a few stores I frequent as a vintage dealer and many of the staff helps me sort through items and this time of the year, I hand out some fun items to them just to say thank you. We all are in a position to give, whether it’s a physical present, a phone call, time or a hug.

Let no one go unnoticed.

Black, Gold and Brilliant

With the holidays in full swing, it’s time to get fancy.

And there’s no more classic or classier a combination for your holiday party wardrobe than basic, but all-around-flattering black with a bit of metallic sparkle.

That’s why these shoes – spotted recently at my local Goodwill shop – are so spot on for this season. Made mostly of soft black suede, these pretty heels have almost a retro feel to them, with the rounded toe and thicker, almost triangular heel. But at the back end, right atop that classic heel, is a touch of modernity that makes these shoes perfect for partying in this year. A zigzag of snakeskin leather – cut into shape that closely resembles a lightening bolt – and outlined with just a little bit of shimmering, golden thread, gives these otherwise traditional heels a seriously glamorous update that’s just right for the holidays (or any other time you want to add a bit of oomph to your step).

IMG_4094In a classic (and comfortable) shape and a deep black suede, these shoes might seem a little conventional from the front, but they’re all party in the back!

Repeat the combo on top.

Black and gold is, obviously, a color combination that goes with essentially everything, so you could easily pair these pretty shoes with a fancy cocktail dress in just about any color – red, green, white, black, of course, or even a rich purple or bright, vibrant blue hue would all look absolutely stunning. But since popping on a knee-length dress is every girl’s go-to for parties requiring fancy attire, I’ve decided to take a different route. Here, I’ve chosen a lovely pair of pants that are just perfect for partying! These trousers, also in a luxurious gold tone, are made of a thin, silky fabric, so they’re easy to move in (should your holiday parties require some real time on the dance floor), but are also flattering and comfy. The thin cut means they look trim and tailored, but in a pair of pants like these, you won’t feel restricted or uncomfortable in the slightest. They are, of course, also ankle-length, so they’re short enough to completely show off my gorgeous new Goodwill find, without obscuring the amazing detail on the heel. On top, I’ve added a simple black tank – putting black on top means the outfit echoes the color combination found in the shoes, and also keeps the top half of the ensemble from fighting all the dazzling, glitzy gorgeousness on the bottom. You could easily pop on a black cardigan, blazer, or shawl over the tank top to ensure you stay warm and cozy throughout your evenings out, but wearing layers will allow you to loose those warmer pieces, when you end up at a crazy crowded cocktail party or decide to start dancing like a diva.

002Sophisticated and stunning in an understated way, this black-and-gold look is a chic way to make a statement at all of your holiday parties this season.

RECYCLE ELECTRONICS – IT’S THE LAW

Bringing Classy Back

This week, I’m channeling some classic, French-inspired style.

With the holidays almost here and the complete craziness of the season in full swing, I’m resorting to my classiest – but most seriously simple – go-to fashion combination. Black and white everything.

You really can never go wrong with this utterly timeless pairing, which is why I was so totally thrilled to come across this week’s gorgeous Goodwill gem – a beautiful beaded cuff bracelet in clean, classic black and white. While the strands of inexpensive beads can make this item feel a bit casual, since they’re strung on stiff wires and woven together, rather than on loose string or elastic, this cuff has an interesting and very clear structure that makes it seem a bit more polished.

IMG_4815-smAn accessory you can wear for years to come, this slightly iridescent black-and-white woven cuff bracelet is a piece that perfectly walks the line between laid-back and luxurious.

Have fun with it!

Like all of my favorite thrift store finds and accessories, this bracelet could complement a wide array of styles – you really could put this on with almost everything currently in your closet, I’m sure. So if, unlike me, you’re not feeling the stress of a packed schedule and hectic holiday season, and want to steer clear of the basic (but always fashionable) black-and-white color combo, by all means – go for it! This bangle would look really lovely against a strong pop of color, like a rich red or vibrant Kelly green. But here, I’ve gone to stick with the timeless, traditional, and always flattering – opaque black tights anchor the look and keep my legs toasty, while a solid black long-sleeved top gives the whole ensemble a effortlessly cool and streamlined look. To break up all the black a little and add some interesting detail to this outfit, I’ve chosen a skirt in a big, bold, black-and-white print, which brings a touch of fun to everything, without injecting any color whatsoever.

IMG_4817Sophisticated and timeless, a completely black-and-white outfit (even down to the accessories) is a tasteful way to make a statement this season.

PlanetBrandee LIVE From Rockefeller Centerhol·i·day

synonyms: day of observance, festival, feast day, fête, fiesta, celebration, anniversary, jubilee; More

verb
BRITISH
1. spend a holiday in a specified place.
“she is holidaying in New York freakin’ City”

Christmas LightsLive from Rockefeller Center, I’m in a bit of a holly jolly jam! From underneath the twinkling bough of this 13 ton tree, and past the bright blaze of its blazing lights, I’ve somehow become tangled in fake snow and lights! while we wait for security, I hold my giggling Rockette cohort close as we share gingerbread horror stories. Bad sweaters! Eggnog! Long lines at the townie malls! Slow tourist walkers! Is this the snow dusted zombie apocalypse? Nope, it’s just holiday shopping time!

PlanetBrandeeNewly untangled, and making a beeline past barricades, we take a quick trek through the front row of this fabulous tree lighting, and slip through the backstage Radio City Music Hall’s doors laughing. True, we’ve all been there, the crazy holiday STRESS time, and most swear to never do it again! But it’s my duty to school you on my glittering “Holiday Survival Guide!” Let me show you how getting up and coming into Goodwill may just be a little better for you, the environment and your wallet, not to mention your sanity! Come with me, and avoid the madness of generic strip malls and overcrowded outlets. Let’s break the usual procrastinator’s move: waiting until the chaos of Christmas Eve and rushing out at the last minute! It’s going to be easier this year, because we’re going to get through this! Goodwill is bringing a breath of fresh air with some fantastic deals, and you can plan on avoiding the NKOTB sweater mall zombies by getting in on this survival packed action! Let’s get started on the simple steps to Holiday Survival:

1. Get spiced hot chocolate, (seductively dipped chilies included!) from The Chocolate Room

2. Drink said delicious beverage while listening to Nat King Cole

3. Put on your most comfortable shopping shoes, in my case, some killer leopard booties!

4. Shop Goodwill!

photo1Let’s have visions of vintage sugarplums dancing through our heads as we work our way down that checklist you’ve had crammed in the back of your bag for the last few weeks:

Fun vintage tie for your thrifting guy pal? $7.99? Check!

100% silk dress for your co-worker who loves the 1920’s look? $9.99? Check!

Unique destash and knick-knacks for the hard-to-shop-for relative starting at $.99 Check!

Cashmere sweaters? 7 Jeans? Checkdoublecheck!

sparkleAnd if all that doesn’t sound like enough to get you ready to survive this holly jolly nightmare, let’s remember that every year Goodwill also keeps 62 million pounds of unwanted goods out of landfills. So instead of giving Auntie Mame a generic made in China plastic trinket that will end up buried in the back of her bodega, or worse, just thrown out, come into Goodwill and find her some cherished secondhand items, and better yet, present it all in a beautiful DIY wrapping paper with a handwritten note of thanks she’ll always remember! Shop local and don’t fall for the zombied mall madness, keep your shopping unique, one of a kind and personal, just like yourself!
