Four Reasons Why Thrifting Rocks

149393651In a recent television segment I did for CT Style, a lifestyle show, we spoke about using thrift stores to revitalize our wardrobes. Yes, thrift stores can be your source for great items both day and night wear. We have discussed this topic quite often, but what exactly makes a thrift store better than a traditional retailer?

Pricing

Thrift stores are for the financially thrifty. Whether you have a fixed income or just a penny pincher, shopping at thrift stores are great ways to save money within all budgets.

Variety

Rarely can you go to your local mall and find, furniture, an evening gown, vintage and contemporary within the same location. The variety in a thrift store is what makes it an urban adventure.

Social and Environmental Responsibility

Textiles are huge pollutants to air, land and water. When we buy new clothes rather than previously owned clothing, we create a larger carbon foot print. In addition to the plights to the environment, lots of clothing is made in sweatshops abroad with extreme conditions. By upcycling and shopping at thrift stores, we no longer participate in the socially irresponsible spending habits of clothing manufacturers.

Your Money Goes to a Great Cause

Purchases at your local Goodwill help to empower individuals with disabilities to become active in the labor force. You can empower individuals with the strength of non-disabled people and save taxes, helping yourself by increasing resources in your community. When was the last time you knew that your purchase went to a good cause?

My segment dealt with fashion and fun but as I have come to truly understand the fashion industry and the thrifting world, I try to promote thrifting over traditional consumerism. I want my purchases to have a purpose.

How Thrifting and $20 Can Resurrect a Dying Wardrobe

thrifting to make the old new again

Iconic designer Diane von Furstenberg is quoted as saying “so when your eyes are swollen and you are bloated and you have your period, and you don’t know what to wear, you open your closet and you go for your friend.” And like old friends, your closet should be a retrospect of good times. But sometimes we can grow tired of our closet and we look to purge, which isn’t a bad thing but sometimes we just need to reconnect and add a little spice to our closet of old friends. One of the best ways I’ve found to add life to my wardrobe without really breaking the bank is to head to my favorite thrift store and look for pieces to resurrect my wardrobe.

When you head to that thrift store, hit the accessories section. Narrow it down to jewelry, scarves and belts. Those three can kick up any and everything, a white button down, a little black dress or your favorite coat. With jewelry go for necklaces and brooches. For scarves, go for those you can wrap around your head or neck and with belts think not only ones to  place in  your pants loops but one that can be thrown over a coat a dress or a jacket.

Now imagine taking a sweater you’ve had for ages, put that chunky necklace on top and see how quickly it will smile back at you. Pull out that blazer that you always wear to interviews; place a brooch on it once you land your dream job. That handbag that is sturdy and faithful, tie that graphic scarf on the handle, pull that go to little black dress out and cinch your waist with a belt.  Here’s another tip, cap your budget at $20, therefore you can really narrow down what you need and think about what you have at home. A big budget is great but a cap makes you more creative and more resourceful.

Think of your thrift store as a place to go for new friends and once you find some items introduce them to your old friends back in your closet at home and wear them like a well-connected networking party.

Stand Tall In Sensational Spring Heels

A new season means new shoes.

Right? Doesn’t every girl think like that? And this week’s gorgeous gem—a pair of stunning high-heeled sandals just right for spring and summer parties—is just the kind of shoe a lady needs to kick off the start of a new season and warmer weather.

This week, I was absolutely thrilled to find such a fabulous wardrobe addition at my local Goodwill thrift shop. Though sassy and statement-making, these sandals actually aren’t going to go out of style anytime soon. The light cork heel makes this footwear that’s totally appropriate for the hot summer months as well as spring, and also keeps them from feeling too over-the-top fancy to wear to everyday affairs. The small platform adds height without adding discomfort, and the cool metal detailing gives them a slightly edgy feel.

black studded heelsGo bold this season with fantastic footwear that’s ladylike, polished, and just a little daring—all at the same time.

Strut with confidence.

We’re not quite to summer yet, but the unexpectedly chilly days and rain shower of spring don’t have to stop you from creating a striking (and still seasonally appropriate) look. In the summer, these sweet shoes would add a bit of glam and funky fun to a floral sundress or other overly feminine piece from your closet. But right now, you can never go wrong with a pair of stretchy, figure-hugging black pants and a light, breezy, silky blouse in just about any color. It’s appropriate for just about any occasion and still warm enough, with a light jacket, to protect you from that sudden spring chill. It’s simple, easy to wear, and looks good on just about every body type—and with one pair of totally fabulous shoes, you’ll suddenly look polished and put together, just like that.

Spring Up Your Wardrobe

Winter to SpringFinally it is spring, like really spring, like sunlight and warm days and flowers blooming. So now it is time to fully embrace your spring wardrobe. Let go of your wools, pack away those sweaters and bring life and harvest to the season of warmer weather and longer days.

How do you spring your wardrobe to life both, literally and figuratively?

First step is to understand that there is still a chance that we will get another deep freeze. So, heavy coats can go to the storage. Now, don’t put everything away, spring still has chilly mornings, warm days and cold nights. This is when you bring your lighter outerwear to the front of your closet. Your denim jackets, trench coat, and blazers will now be your outerwear. And bring a scarf just in case; a silk one adds a touch of chic.

A hat is still cute, but no more wool beanie. Wear a dapper lighter-weight fedora, a leather cap, or even a floppy hat, especially for a morning walk. Toss the gloves off, let your fingers breath. The chances of frostbite are low now, especially in New York. What else can we store away to bring life into our Spring attire? Oh yes, snow boots- hide them, but keep your funky ankle booties until right before Memorial Day.

Lighten up not only with the layers, but with color. Either go for Marsala, an Earthy reddish brown which is flattering on everyone, or try bold jewel tones that radiate an aura of enthusiasm. Yellow is one of the most approachable colors in the world. Pink represents femininity but a man can be just as dapper in blush.

This past winter was rough on us mentally, physically and fashionably. Let’s really embrace and capture spring by having the wardrobe to match the outdoors.

Bold Bangles and Graphic Statements

Everyone wants to make a statement.

And not just any statement – the right one. Clothing and accessories say a lot about what and who we want to present to the world, and that’s why finding plenty of pretty (and professional) options at a decent price is so important to so many of us – myself included.

This week, I was so excited to find a really stunning piece at my local Goodwill thrift shop. This bracelet looks far pricier than it actually was (a mere 5 bucks!), and the dark slate gray metal is sophisticated, but will also easily go with just about everything in my wardrobe, including items for both winter and spring – since we’re still sort of stuck in that in-between phase. The mix of larger, heavier-looking chains with more delicate ones gives this edgy accessory just enough feminine flair, and the stretchy band the chains are attached to will easily fit any wrist, making this item both pretty and practical.

layered chain braceletAdd a bit of boldness and an edgy feel to your favorite spring ensembles with a cool and slightly daring accessory choice, like this layered chain bracelet.

Don’t let Mother Nature get the best of you!

Since the weather is still a bit up and down and entirely unpredictable, I often find myself pairing winter pieces – like a classic and always classy pair of black pants – with lighter spring attire, like this silky teal blouse. The pop of color and lightweight fabric on top makes this outfit feel totally appropriate for spring, but the black pants ensure I don’t look like I’ve gotten ahead of myself and started dressing for summer way too early – plus, they’re suitable for work, play, and absolutely everything else. The stark contrast between the black on the bottom and bright pop of color on top gives this outfit an eye-catching, graphic appeal that will never fail to impress – and of course, this week’s gorgeous gem of a find, just adds to the whole striking look.

bold pink cat eye glassesEven a bold outfit can use a added bit of glamour! Don’t be afraid to go big by pairing a bold accessory with an already eye-catching ensemble.

Saved by the Scarf

Is there one spring accessory better than all the others?

It’s so difficult to pick favorites when there are so many totally fabulous (and fantastically priced!) finds every day at your local thrift shop, but I would say that there is one item that makes dressing up a boring ensembles easier than any other – a colorful scarf.

Whatever fabric, textures, and colors you prefer, you can find a scarf to match. And it’s a good thing, too, because a lovely lightweight scarf is not only super functional during the chilly months of early spring weather, but also really versatile – throw it on over a sweater, a t-shirt, or to complement a cute blazer and you’ve suddenly got an outfit that looks polished, even if you took only seconds to put it together. This week’s Goodwill gem is that kind of a fabulous scarf. In a light cotton fabric and vibrant coral color, it will instantly wake up any tired or too-basic look in your closet.

coral scarf with navy and white accentsIn a fresh, springy coral hue with sophisticated navy and white accents, this simple cotton scarf is a must-have accessory for every girl this spring.

Refresh basic pieces.

No matter how ho-hum an outfit might be, a bright, pretty scarf like this one can instantly dress it up and make it feel new again. Here, I’ve paired my fun new find with a classic pair of fitted jeans, a simple gray tank and a navy tee. The navy top picks up on the navy accent in the scarf’s pattern, making this look feel coordinated and polished without becoming too fussy. The simple shapes and lines in these basic pieces are flattering on basically any body, but don’t fight with the scarf for attention, so you can really let a fun and playful accessory like this one shine.

neutral navy top with blue jeansOne perfect accessory can really become the focal point of any outfit – just support it with basic, well-fitting pieces in complementary pieces and you’ve got a cute and versatile ensemble in no time!

Flower Power!

Welcome spring with some floral flair.

In preparation for spring (which is seriously getting here when, exactly?) I’ve been talking a lot about bright colors and bold, exciting prints. But you don’t have to go super bright this season to make a big fashion statement.

This week’s Goodwill gem is a pretty find that’s totally fit for the season – and this crazy, up-and-down early spring weather. Since it’s basically a roller coaster out there and every day seems to bring new temperatures and conditions completely different from the day before, you can’t forgo all those layers just yet, but this lovely scarf will keep you warm, while still letting you feel like you’re lightening up a bit. The lovely floral print is feminine and ladylike, but the classic black-and-white color combo is subtle and sophisticated – and, of course, will beautifully complement absolutely anything in your closet.

this black-and-white floral print scarfPretty, simple, and oh-so-chic, this black-and-white floral print scarf is the one accessory that every lady needs this season.

Dress up basic black.

We’ve all got tons of black in our winter wardrobes, but I’m thoroughly sick of wearing nothing but dark, drab pieces all the time, and I bet you all are, too. The easiest solution? Put a scarf on it! It’s still chilly enough most days that you want to layer up in cozy sweaters, but it also feels like we’re way past due for a little warmth and sunshine, and the opportunity to wear fresh spring pieces. So, grab that classic black sweater you wear at least twice a week, and top it off with a fresh, springy accessory like this week’s darling find. This scarf is still black and white, so it won’t look out of place on top of  a soft knit sweater or other winter-appropriate wardrobe pieces. But the pretty print and lighter cotton fabric will liven up that basic black item and make it feel refreshed and fun again!

IMG_4839One perfect accessory, like this lovely floral scarf, is all it takes to add a little springtime freshness and fun to old outfits and classic winter items.

Bold, Crazy Color

It’s time to wake up your wardrobe.

Bring energy back into old clothes and beloved vintage pieces with a brilliant accessory choice, like these attention-grabbing shoes spotted this week at my local Goodwill thrift shop.

These striped wedges are a little on the loud side, but in the best possible way. The graphic print contains a whole multitude of deep, flattering hues and a few strips of classic black to balance out all the brightness and provide much-needed contrast. The soft cloth upper and closed, rounded toe make these shoes suitable for just about any season – they’ll keep your feet warm in fall and early spring, when there’s still an icy chill in the air, but they’re also breathable enough to wear in the heart of summer.

bold graphic wedges
Brilliant, graphic, and bold, these striking wedges are accessories worth grabbing to pair with all of your favorite spring and summer pieces.

With heels this daring, keeping the rest of your outfit simple is key.

For the rest of my ensemble here, I’ve chosen deep, more subdued hues, like the rich emerald green of this classic sweater. Long but slightly fitted, this sweater hugs curves in all the right places and manages to be flattering without being revealing or brash in any way. Simple gray pants – also form fitting, but not too terribly tight – make a solid base on which to build my surprisingly bold look. This outfit really is all about the shoes – the soft, solid colors and classic shapes make the perfect backdrop for this pair of brilliant, totally eye-catching shoes, which if paired with another print or super loud color choice, would probably feel a bit overwhelming rather than cool, fun, and carefree.

These shoes are the perfect thing to liven up an otherwise tired or basic winter ensemble, like this one, and give it a real burst of personality and fun flair.

Spring is About to POP!

We’ve finally turned a corner.

The temperatures have regularly climbed above freezing for the last week or so (hooray!), and it feels like it’s truly time to welcome spring (even though I’ve mentally already been there for about a month).

And to welcome spring in style, I’ve chosen pieces this week that are all about color! This week’s Goodwill gem is a daring—but super fun and playful—neon yellow belt. Since it’s very skinny, the in-your-face color comes off as cool and cute rather than overwhelming—it’s just one little strip of seriously bright accessorizing that will really wake up any outfit.

neon yellow beltTotally simple but still bold enough to make a statement, this thin, neon yellow belt is nothing but fun.

Keep the rest of your outfit simple, too.

The key with such a bright and attention-grabbing accessory is to pair it with basic pieces and other solid colors to keep the whole ensemble from feeling too busy (or just too, too much). You could definitely throw on something effortless and classic, like your favorite black pants and a solid tee or sweater in another neutral hue like white or gray. But here, I’ve still paired it with another vibrant color—and I think I’ve managed to pull it off because the item I’ve chosen (a dress in a lovely purple) is solid—there’s no big, loud pattern fighting the neon for attention. The purple shift, thought still bright, is slightly more subdued than the yellow and is also in a classic shape with clean lines, making it the perfect style partner for my eye-catching new accessory.

plum dressBright, bold, and fresh, this new spring ensemble—featuring my fabulous new neon yellow belt—is as cheerful and sunny as spring itself.
