#BreakFreeFromPlastic with Goodwill NYNJ

By Goodwill NYNJ

You may have missed it, but Monday July 3rd, 2017 was International Plastic Bag Free Day. Don’t be too upset though, it’s a holiday where you’re encouraged to celebrate it before, during, and after its established date. We, here at Goodwill NYNJ, want to help relish in the holiday for at least a little while longer.

If You Give a Girl a Men’s Shirt…

By Goodwill NYNJ, goodwillnynj.org

Goodwill is no stranger to Do-It-Yourself fashion. We ❤️  a good DIY. Our stores are a treasure trove of goodies for those who like to get their hands messy with threads, scissors and glue.

This past month, students from Parsons School of Design reconstructed an array of men’s shirts into high fashion women’s attire. For their thesis project, the students from Parsons focused on the “anonymous women” behind the seams and design of men’s wear clothing, Below you will find photos taken in the warehouse at Goodwill NYNJ headquarters.

Special Edition: LIVE from New York Fashion Week!

New York Fashion Week

Yes, I am HERE and reporting LIVE from the epicenter of fashion: New York City and the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week! This event, which runs from February 6-13, is held at Lincoln Center. Some of the biggest names in fashion will show their Fall/Winter 2014 collections.

New York Fashion WeekIn this two-part #NYFW series, I’ll highlight not only the runway trends of the “big” players we all know in fashion, but also on the street style, new designers embracing sustainability, and the fresh details that make this event a whirlwind of “seen and be seen” photo ops!

David Ryan SmithThe ever talented David Ryan Smith makes an appearance at #NYFW!

It’s not like we’re all going to be wearing Duckie Brown neon green pants anytime soon, but it’s always fun taking a walk on fashion’s wild side!

For now, less talk and let’s revel in the eye-candy and links to some of the designers making the kickoff a blast!

Monique Lhuillier
Dedicated to sophisticated luxury, with divine gowns worn by A-list celebrities, this is a line worth daydreaming about wearing.

Alexander McQueenAlexander McQueen
Kate Moss + McQueen = fashion legends creating some imagery bound to have the fashionistas talking! McQueen’s iconic shapes and forms live on and it’s easy to see why, he was a mastermind of not only couture but fitting the female form in an almost mythological way. Every runway show I’ve had the pleasure of attending has been a cinematographic feast!

BCBG: YES it’s an ORANGE jumpsuit making headlines! When actress Samira Wiley showed up at the runway show last night, tongues went wagging and photos were taken, all touting, “Orange is the NEW Black!” Well, we can’t be sure if it has staying power, but we do know, BCBG does, and judging by its new pieces, that’s not changing anytime soon!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
Stay tuned for Part 2 LIVE from #NYFW as I do some fun shopping of my own, talk with talented fashion designers with a focus on sustainability and show you some Goodwill Insider ways to make NYFW looks your own without the killer price tags!

Also, keep an eye for me on Twitter @PlanetBrandee #GWInsider as I take you to the streets of Lincoln Center for pictures of fashionistas on the scene and on the town!

Till next time, see you on the runway!

Brandee, the manager of Goodwill’s 72nd Street boutique, is also a writer, performance artist, thrift fashion and DIY enthusiast. Goodwill Gem: Cowboy Boots

Halloween is right around the corner, just waiting to shout BOO! With the holiday in mind, our columnist Lauren is searching her local Goodwill for items that can do double-duty – finds fit for a costume party, but chic enough to last into the days, months and years beyond. Curious about her latest find? Well giddy’up cowboy, here’s this week’s Goodwill Gem: Cowboy Boots!

In traditional country style, these homey cowgirl boots have a soft leather upper in a natural hue and the characteristic stitching that makes a boot so fabulous, you’ll never want to take it off, no matter where you actually are - even at a cemetery dance party. Ooo spooky.

Need an escape? Whether it’s for a Halloween fantasy or just your average autumn day, nothing can transport you out of the city more quickly than a pair of classic cowgirl boots. This fantastic pair – rounded up at my local Goodwill store, of course – is the real deal.

Earth Day DIY: Upcycling Napkins with Evette Rios

Earth Day may be over, but why not keep the green feeling going and hold your Happy Earth Day DIY Dinner Party this weekend? Here in video 4, crafter and Rachael Ray blogger Evette Rios shows how to reuse Goodwill finds to create adorable party-perfect napkins. We hope you enjoy the latest DIY Earth Day Dinner Party project: Upcycled Napkins:

This project really puts the spotlight on sustainability – just think how many single-use paper products a standard table setting devours. With tips like Evette’s, we have to wonder: why would anyone choose to hurt the earth with disposables when celebrating it with reuse is this fun? Shop Goodwill, get creative and do Mama Nature proud!

Snow Shoes, Goodwill Style

Here at Goodwill, we’re practical so much of the time. We donate our clothes for tax deductions; we shop Goodwill to support sustainability and prevent carbon emissions that creating new clothes causes; we de-clutter our closets and garages and ex-boyfriends drawers so that our lightly-used goods can be sold for money that supports work rehabilitation programs.

This poster may be vintage, but our goals are the same. (And check out that Goodwill Girl's great 1920s style!)

We’re practical, practical people, right? So why is it that with this storm looming, all we want to do is fantasize about the ridiculous, awesome, incredible shoes at the Goodwill 23rd Street Store?

Because we love our environment, our community, our fellow man, and (to be honest) our account balance. But we also love STYLE. Glorious, eye-catching, draw-dropping style. Even in the snow. And just in case you do too, we’ve made up special impracticable post all about shoes.* Enjoy!:

Imagine these $20 Steve Madden babies glittering against all the fresh white snowfall. Divine!
A demure touch of color peeking out under jeans... or a wild streak paired with a little black dress & matte black tights?
"She wore blue velvet..." but we're partial to these heavenly $40 Stuart Weitzman satin pumps.
There's just enough Mad Men fever in our fashion sense to make us want these $30 Brooks Brothers babies bad. Pencil skirts & cocoa pumps? Secretary style never looked so good!
These $15 Nine West boots would be perfect for the big city streets - once the snow plow's done it's thing...

*…shoes whose sale, by the way, that just happen to support our environment, our community, our fellow man and (icing on the cake here) our account balance. Enjoy!
