High Steppin’, High Fashion

Back-to-school time is here. It’s hard to believe, but that means that autumn is really right around the corner. To ready yourself for a fashionable switch to the fall season, start thinking about the few fantastic, go-with-everything fall pieces you’ll need to add new life to last year’s wardrobe pieces.

This week’s find – a totally fabulous pair of strappy leather sandals with a stunning cutout detail on the sides and saucy zipper from the toe to the top of the shoe – are just the kind of striking shoes you’ll need to perfect your favorite fall looks. Leather, while a bit heavy for the hot and sticky summer months, are perfect for when the weather starts to transition.

Step into a stylish new season with a pair of sassy, sexy black leather heels with fantastic details, like this pair’s cool cutouts and seriously flirty zipper up the front.

It’s time to transition. Sadly, summer won’t last forever, but that doesn’t mean that you have to pack up your flowing blouses and pretty sundresses just yet. At this time of the year, when the weather will continue to flip between hot and cool for weeks, a pair of high heels in a perfect-for-fall material with still-summery details, like cutouts, is just right for this tricky time of year. And for a perfect balance between warm and cool, put these haute heels in a classic and cool black on with a breezy, flowing dress in a much warmer hue, like this brilliant coral sundress with a satiny finish. To make sure it’s appropriate for any suddenly chilly temps or early fall breezes, top it with a simple, neutral cardigan that doesn’t take away from the brightly colored ensemble or the fabulously fun footwear.

To take your favorite summer pieces seamlessly into fall, add an extra layer on top of a lighter summer outfit and finish off the look with a pair of funky leather high heels, like the ones spotted this week at my local Goodwill thrift store.

Ultra-Relaxed, Ultra-Chic

Effortless summer ensembles. It’s easy to look great when you have a lot of time and effort to put into your outfits, but what about dressing for your hectic, everyday life?

Special occasions are one thing, but for those days when you’re just struggling to get out the door – especially in the midst of summer when it’s hot, humid and sticky – you can still look fantastic without a lot of work, by choosing an easy, airy ensemble and topping it off with an adorable hat that’s just right for the season, like the headpiece I spotted at my local Goodwill thrift shop this week. The light straw weave and festive blue pattern is so super summery, it’ll make you feel like you’re out on the beach or boardwalk, even when you’re just walking down a city street.

straw hatThis light, summer, super cool straw hat in a bright off-white and blue pattern is beachy, beautiful, and will lend any look a totally laid-back feel.

A tremendous topper will finish off any. For the most amazing beach- or brunch-ready look, start with a simple, relaxed, and easy-to-wear one-piece is a light, silky, airy fabric, like the one pictured here. Though it’s black, the flowing fabric, sheer sides and wide leg on this jumper make it look and feel incredibly comfortable and hassle-free – just like all your summer outfits should be. For an even more obviously summer look, choose a romper or jumpsuit in a vibrant floral pattern or bright color. Paired with a metallic sandal and this easy, breezy hat, you’ve instantly got a stylish but totally seasonally appropriate look – all put together in about 5 seconds flat.

black romperFor an insanely quick, pretty, and perfect-for-summer style, try throwing on an easy, flowing one-piece ensemble with a favorite straw hat – like the one I came across this week and my local Goodwill – and you’re good to go in no time!

Let the Sunshine In!

Summer is in full swing. Though it may be getting uber hot and muggy, now that we’re officially halfway through the season, that doesn’t mean you can’t still look great and appropriate for the humid, end-of-July weather.

And no matter how many times I say it, I think it bears repeating once again – there’s nothing more summery than a vibrant, sunshiny pop of bold yellow to instantly brighten up any summer ensemble. This week’s gorgeous Goodwill gem is a pretty pair of retro, round-toed heels in a beautiful, deep buttery yellow color, and they will surely add an immediate lift to any summer wardrobe staples. The rounded toe and thicker heel still look lovely and feminine, but make these high-heeled beauties far more comfortable for walking than a pair of pointy stilettos. And did I mention that fabulous color?! I can’t emphasize enough how flattering this deep yellow is on nearly every skin tone, or how it really, truly goes with absolutely every other color in the (fashion) rainbow.

buttery yellow pumps

An adorably feminine and yet bold pair of brilliantly colored heels like these is just what every stylish gal needs in her wardrobe for the summer (and even to start transitioning into fall).

The eternal conundrum: comfort versus suitable style. To me, there’s nothing more perfect for beating the summer heat in style than clothing and accessories in bright pops of color and loose, flowing fits. Light, airy clothing is key to keeping cool while still looking ladylike and appropriate for a variety of settings – if you can’t be at the beach all the time (and most of us, unfortunately, cannot), just stripping down to next to nothing isn’t really an option.  Larger pieces in lighter fabrics that don’t cling too much to the body are a great way to stay cool, but still keep yourself relatively covered up (and allowed into public places). For a casual night out, you could easily pop these on with a pair of tailored shorts and a favorite tank or tee, just to jazz up an otherwise basic or constantly worn look. But here, I’ve gone for a more office-appropriate look – it can be absolutely miserable to dress for work in the midst of summer – and chosen a few other pieces in contrasting but still vibrant colors, to keep the look summery, happy, and fun, but still allow those vivid yellow heels to seriously pop. The bright pink of the skirt (and in the heart on the loose-fitting tee) is the perfect complement to that sunshine yellow – both warm tones, the two colors work well together and don’t fight each for onlookers’ attention, and yet are still different enough to really allow the other to totally stand out.

vibrant pink

These simply stunning, sunshine-colored heels are cute, comfy, and absolutely scream summer. They’ll look beautiful with an array of warm-weather colors, like the vibrant pink in the outfit pictured here, but will also work well for you when you start throwing your fall wardrobe staples back into the mix, as they will look divine with reds, browns, grays, and more subdued hues, too.

All Hail the Headpiece

The perfect topper can make the perfect outfit. Hats can feel a bit tricky for the average girl to pull off, but they really shouldn’t feel anything of the sort. With a little confidence and the right attitude, a stellar hat is the ideal accessory to use to show off your killer style and fearless outlook.

This week’s Goodwill find – a fabulous, super summery headpiece in a simple straw material – is spot on for the summer months. The texture of the  straw-like material, along with a few imperfections and strategic gradations of color, make this relaxed hat feel incredibly cool and effortlessly stylish, and the light, natural fabric is perfect for pairing with absolutely any summer ensemble. The classic fedora-like shape – with the little lift and curl of brim at the back – makes this traditionally styled hat look oh-so-modern and totally updated for contemporary ladies.

natural woven fedora Simple and classic, but with a modern twist, this natural woven fedora is the most fantastic hat to complement any outfit you’ll want to wear this summer.

A wear-with-all warm-weather topper. A lot of girls I know feel intimidated by hats for some reason – maybe they just seem a bit bold, in a modern age where many ladies can get away with wearing no head coverings at all. But for the gal who just can’t resist a bit of sassy style, the right hat can be that extra little bit of oomph you need to really pull an ensemble together – especially a more laid-back, casual, summery ensemble. Because of its natural hues and classic construction, a fedora like this one could really be worn with a whole array of summer pieces – it’d look equally cute with a floaty, floral sundress or a pair of tight-fitting jeans and a loose white tee. But here, I’ve gone a slightly different route – I love the idea of taking what is traditionally a piece styled for an old man – a fedora – and pairing it with other pieces that walk the line between masculine and feminine. I’ve chosen a pair of slim-cut trousers in a lovely lavender hue, which could easily feel androgynous, if not for the decidedly girly color. On top, I’ve picked a simple, cap-sleeve sweater in a black-and-white print – a piece that also feels like a bit of a modern twist on a traditional top. Finished off with my brand new fedora, this look is comfortable, effortless and easy to wear, and yet clearly walks the line between classic and modern, masculine and feminine, for an edgy, amped-up ensemble that’s sure to impress.

modern takes on classic wardrobe itemsPlaying with different styles, eras, and ideas can be the key to creating a truly successful and fashionable outfit. Here, I’ve chosen pieces that are all modern takes on classic wardrobe items, for a look that’s sure to look stylish for years to come.

Rowr! The Power of Animal Prints

Like an animal. They may feel a bit brash and bold – especially if you’re used to choosing more demure colors and fabrics – but a pop of vibrant color and a saucy animal print are the easiest way to add a little stylish sass to even the most understated of outfits.

This week’s Goodwill gem is really one to go gaga over – neon hues and a snakeskin print might seem like way too much on one bag, but here, it actually works perfectly somehow. The bright pink and blue strips of color of broken up with a little classic black and white, which keeps the color from screaming out at you and becoming overwhelming. The snakeskin pattern, with all color interspersed throughout, starts to look somewhat abstract. The classic rectangular clutch shape and simple gold clasp add a hint of old-world class to this otherwise very modern piece.

technicolor animal print clutch
Bold this bag definitely is, but why shy away from a serious fashion statement? Brilliant contrasting colors and a playful animal print mean this is one accessory that’s sure to make you stand out in a crowd.

Play with a bevvy of beautiful styles. Putting together one ensemble doesn’t mean you have to stick to one specific style throughout. Since my fabulous new clutch is so modern and daring, I’ve chosen slightly more modest pieces to complete my look. A simple, stretchy, straight black pant is a piece that can anchor any outfit, and makes an especially good backdrop for anything really bright or bold. On top, a light, cropped, lacey top in an unassuming shade of cream contrasts nicely with the black and makes for a pretty, classic, all-around flattering ensemble that a girl could wear absolutely anywhere – but next to the ladylike lace and traditionally feminine feel of the rest of the outfit, my new snakeskin clutch really pops!

black and creme lace outfit
Contrast is the key to any truly attention-grabbing ensemble. Here, I’ve paired the edgier accessory piece – my glamorous new clutch – with a really classic but flattering outfit in black and cream to create a really polished, pretty, but still fun and interesting look.

Mid-Summer’s Most Perfect Hues

Some colors just scream summer. And while you choose to wear them at any time of year, a vibrant, beautiful blue and warm, buttery soft yellow are two colors that just look even more gorgeously radiant on anyone and everyone during the summer months.

This week’s find is a totally sweet, ultra summery tote in just that shade of beautiful, buttery, mellow yellow. The ladylike and classic shape is simple and structured, and will ensure you look superbly polished whenever you’re caught carrying it – but the soft and creamy color is smooth and relaxed, and just right for the summer season’s laid-back vibe. The slight curve to the shape on top keeps it from looking too, too stodgy or uptight and gives this cleanly designed bag a decidedly feminine edge.

summer tote in mellow yellow

Classic, for sure, but boring this bag is not. It’s beautifully cool composition, luscious yellow color and uncluttered design make this an accessory worth carrying for years to come.

Play with complementary summer shades. Yellow – reminiscent of sunshine and sandy beaches – certainly shouts “summer!” (yes, I think the exclamation point is entirely necessary), but it’s not the only hue that’s ideal for the warm weather season. The cool blue of ocean waves and clear summer skies is the perfect shade to counter and complement yellow’s warmth. To play against the voluptuous sunny yellow of my fabulous new bag, I’m pairing it here with a darling knee-length pleated skirt in a vivid blue pattern. The pattern contains just a small amount of black in the pattern’s outline, so I’ve chosen a simple, spare black tank to top off this look, ensuring nothing up top fights with the beautiful print on the bottom – and the stark black also makes a gorgeous background for the bright purse, forcing it to stand out and shine, though it’s not the brightest shade of yellow out there. The whole ensemble will come together simply and prettily with a basic pair of sandals to ground it (and if you have a yellow pair to match the bag, even better!).

cool and summery outfit

One gorgeous, summery accessory is all you need to build a lovely look around. If you have a piece you love – like this week’s find, my darling sunshine-colored bag – then choose basic or classic pieces from your wardrobe that will easily complement it or sit happily in the background, allowing it to truly stand out and grab oodles of approving attention.

Cool and Collected

Dressing for work during the summer months can be a bit of a chore. In the Tri-State area, it’s hot as blazes and muggy to boot for the majority of the summer. Which, of course, means that most offices, shops, restaurants and other places of work crank the air conditioning up so high there’s a 20-degree change in temperature every time you walk in or out of a building. So, how to stay comfortable – and cute and polished-looking – while dealing with such drastic environmental conditions on a daily basis?

It’s not easy, but it is doable, with a few crucial wardrobe pieces that can serve many purposes. It’s simple enough to swap a blouse or a tank here and there, but it’s essential to have a few fabulous accessories like this week’s find – a pair of fantastic black pumps – that can be worn constantly and beautifully season after season. The loafer-like style has been huge in recent seasons, and the slightly androgynous look really comes off as effortlessly cool. Plus, with a solid (but not too skinny) heel underneath, these shoes are sort of reminiscent of a much older, almost Revolution-era style – and who doesn’t want to channel such an iconic fashionista as Marie Antoinette every once in awhile? These soft black shoes might be a bit tamer than the last Queen of France’s footwear, but that doesn’t mean they won’t still add a bit of whimsy and charm to your everyday work wear.

black suede pumpsClassic and cool, these solid (and sexy!) black pumps borrow just enough from the boys to look utterly relaxed and unruffled with any outfit.

Opposites sometimes make perfect pairs. Just as with people (or so I’m told, anyway), opposites sometimes end up balancing each other in just the right ways, and that holds true for fashion, too. And in the midst of the sultry summer heat, it’s especially important to make sure at least one of your pieces feels light, bright and airy, even if you’re anchoring the whole ensemble with something a little more serious – which is a basic requirement for many of us in the workplace, at least. Here, I’ve paired a pair of stretchy, form-fitting black trousers – an always-acceptable choice, no matter your destination – with a flowy silk blouse in a bright blue-and-white print. The top just screams summer, but the pants – and my brand new black pumps – help bring this airy ensemble back down to earth.

brilliant pattern print top with dark bottomOne brilliantly colored top in a vibrant print doesn’t need any competition from the other pieces you pair it with. Choose simple, classic bottoms and a pair of pretty, wear-with-everything heels, like these sweet black pumps, to make the whole look feel completely polished and professional, even on summer’s hottest days (and your office’s most frigid).

Sparkle Like the Sun

The full summer sun calls for a bit of stylish sparkle to match. The rest of the year, it can seem like overkill to cover yourself in sequins and glitter, but whether you’re dressing up or down, during the summer months, a bit of bling is always appropriate.

This week, I happened to come across a coolly casual, but still slightly glamorous, pair of sandals that’s perfect for any lady’s summer wardrobe. They have just enough bling to really brighten up any warm weather look, no matter how laid-back, but look relaxed enough for summer’s chilled out, easygoing vibe. The simple, flat faux-leather bottom is comfortable and practical, and its soft tan color can be easily paired with any of summer’s go-to brilliant hues, like vibrant reds, corals, and oranges or cooler blues and greens. The pretty diamond-shaped top, in a stunning, shimmering metallic gold, also complements any color the fashion rainbow, and the less-than-standard shape adds some darling detail and visual interest to these otherwise basic sandals.

diamond shapped gold shimmering flat sandals

Simple can sometimes be totally fabulous. These pretty, delicate flats have just enough sparkle and shine to look really fun, feminine, and summery, but can still be worn with even everyday looks.

These sandals add flair to any and every fashion-forward combination. These summery shoes are the rare kind of accessory that can literally be worn with absolutely anything. In the summer, you could totally get away with wearing these with a cocktail dress to a fancier affair, and still look completely chic and pulled together. However, I think they’re particularly perfect for wearing with a less swanky – but still fun and flirty – ensemble, like the one pictured here. A short, brightly colored skirt is a great way to stay cool in the midst of the summer heat while still looking smart, and this skirt’s bubble hem adds a bit of movement and life to the outfit, as well. On top, a basic black fitted halter keeps this get-up sophisticated, and ensures it doesn’t take the turn from looking playful to looking entirely juvenile. This outfit is adorable and totally appropriate for hot, humid summer weather as it is, but the addition of this week’s gorgeous Goodwill find – my fabulous gold sandals – gives this ensemble the bit of extra oomph it so clearly needs to pull it all together.

black tanktop with purple skirt

Sometimes, all you need to bring a few basic wardrobe staples together – like this fun, flirty skirt and classic black top – is a little bit if summery, golden shimmer.

Red, White, and Black

Whether you love the French or hate them, you have to admit they’ve got style. There’s something so utterly effortless – and yet so absolutely beautiful – about the relaxed, thrown-together glamour of French style. The messy buns, chic striped tops, and minimal makeup somehow look entirely fantastic. But don’t fret! No matter what your usual fashion personality, it’s a cinch to work some fabulously French, totally timeless pieces into your own wardrobe.

This week’s fantastic find, spotted at my favorite local thrift shop, is so divine simply because it is so completely timeless. Espadrilles are really the summer shoe across the water, and for good reason – they look darling on just about everyone, they’re unbelievably comfy, and the basic fabric upper and woven rope bottom has the kind of rustic charm that it’s hard to imagine any European town (or woman) without. Plus, if you’re lucky enough to snag a pair like this one on the cheap – and in a stellar bright red hue, no less – these classic, always-chic shoes really will complement absolutely any look in your summer wardrobe.

bright red espadrilles

Mais oui! Even you can easily pull off some chic, French-inspired footwear, like these classic espadrille wedges in a vibrant, life-affirming rouge.

Don’t let them know you work at it. From all accounts, French women take just as much pride in their appearance and feminine charms as American women do – they just like to look totally nonchalant and carefree while doing it. So what is the key to this totally laid-back, graceful, stress-free style? Good basics that will never steer you wrong. The focus is on playing up your natural assets – let your own radiant, natural, glowing self shine through, instead of covering it up with a lot of over-the-top or excessive clothing, accessories, or makeup. You can easily pull together an always-in-style French look by pairing these pretty shoes with a pair of cropped, ankle-length black pants (à la Audrey Hepburn) and a striped top with a 3-quarter-length sleeve, like those that have become so synonymous with classic French style. Here, I’ve played on that classic combination by using the same basic but always-flattering palate (black-and-white), but changing the pattern and pieces up a little to make it just a little more my own. The hounds-tooth pattern of the skirt is just as timeless as a stripe, but the larger size of the print makes this skirt feel just a bit more modern. A simple black tank with one tiny extra detail – a flirty, feminine ruffle at the neckline – keeps this look polished and ladylike, but still evokes that entirely European take on classy, elegant style for any era.

chic black and white summer outfit

Don’t think pulling off pretty, chic, continental looks isn’t for you! Even on a budget, with a few new, thrifty pieces – like these fabulous red espadrille wedges – you can instantly add a bit of ooh la la! to any basic pieces you already have in your wardrobe.

Feeling Fancy-(Almost)Free

Good style doesn’t have to be expensive. After years of shopping at Goodwill thrift shops, looking for the perfect accessories (and even the occasional outfit), I’ve certainly learned that. And feeling like you got a gorgeous new piece to add your style collection for essentially nothing? Well, there’s almost nothing that feels better than finding a hidden gem like that.

This week’s find is exactly that – a beautiful bangle that’s beyond easy on your budget, but looks like million bucks. The pretty, shimmering gold metal is imprinted with a subtle design, and the small purple gems studded around the band add a tiny pop of downright royal color that will instantly amp up any look, whether it’s summer, fall, or winter. A perfectly polished and classy accessory like this one is appropriate for any season.

gold bracelet with purple gems

No matter the time of year or the outfit you’re trying to punch up, this pretty, ladylike bangle will always be a stylish and chic addition to your look.

Subtle and understated elegance. Sure, sometimes it’s fun to throw on something that’s loud, proud, and absolutely over-the-top. But for everyday wear, sometimes going with something a little simpler is the right way to add a little glam. This bracelet is that kind of a piece. Wear it with basically anything in your wardrobe – from a fancy, flowing, gem-toned cocktail dress to your favorite fitted t-shirt and jeans – and it instantly adds an elegant, ladylike touch that will make even the most basic look feel finished and put together. Here, I’ve thrown it on with a go-to look of mine for work or a nicer weekend outing. The dark, slim-cut trousers are a classic piece that easily anchors the rest of the ensemble without taking attention away from the more detailed, printed silk top – which also has a touch of black in the trim, but adds pretty pink and purple tones for a shot of sophisticated color. The pinks, purples, and blues in the blouse are the perfect palate to complement my new bracelet, which would lend an air of elegance and grace to a classic outfit combination like this one.

add playfulness to a work outfit

Simultaneously add a notes of upscale style and funky playfulness to any workday look with absolutely no effort by finishing off your favorite looks with a charming, understated piece of jewelry like this pretty purple-and-gold bangle.
