Thrifted Jean Shirt to the Rescue

A Good Look Contributor

In the summer months, I never leave the house without a jean shirt just in case it gets cooler in the evening or the air conditioning wherever I’m going is cold enough to keep ice cream frozen. I love jean shirts because they are so versatile and can be worn so many ways. My favorite looks are tucking them into a skirt or pants and wearing them open like a jacket. I’m also so into the juxtaposition of wearing them with something dressy to create a fun, dressed down look.

This newly thrifted, over-sized jean shirt is my new favorite. I love how it looks dressed down with this girly retro dress. I’ve been traveling like crazy all summer long and I forgot to pack a jean shirt for my last trip. As the nights are getting a little on the cooler side, I felt so chilly without my denim shirt. My travel companions may have huffed just a little when I dragged them thrift shopping so I could grab a jean shirt. As a thrift and vintage lover, I couldn’t imagine buying or wearing one that wasn’t secondhand. I plan on wearing this over-sized jean shirt a ton!

How do you wear your denim shirts?

GUEST BLOGGER SHAUNYA: Are you in a summer style rut?

At the beginning of Summer I get all excited about my maxi dresses, the gingham, eyelet and linen, and my shorts; oh I love a good pair of shorts. Summer is shorter than a pair of daisy dukes and winter is long, brutal, and never ending in New York. So enjoying warm weather fashion can conjure nostalgia of previous warm and steamy nights. I’m not being provocative, due to humidity and conservation of energy, my apartment is usually warm and steamy.

Every year, right around Memorial Day, I open up my vaults and purge my spring and summer fashions and start to create lovable outfits and reminisce of stylish summer nights.  All goes well and I let those long days take over. Then right around mid-July, I get hit with a summer style rut.

It hits you suddenly, but you knew it was inevitable. You’ve done laundry weekly, you realized some things were either too casual or to dressy. Then the humidity hits and no matter what you wear, by end of day you come off as a sweaty drenched walking towel.  You walk down the street and see all the cute outfits, and start to feel like your striped maxi from three seasons ago just isn’t cutting it.  It’s not that you are flawed or that your clothes suck, it’s more that you are seeing more than you want.

When you pound the pavement in this concrete jungle, you see so many stylish people. Naturally, you get street style envy. Suddenly, that floral print shirt you hugged in May looks like a rather sad bouquet that hasn’t been watered. Your dark denim doesn’t compare to the cool ripped jeans that girl wears on the L train.

So what’s a person in a style rut to do? Do you run and get every trend you see? That will leave you bankrupt and style corrupt, YES, style corrupt. Just because you like a trend so much, it doesn’t mean it is for you. I appreciate the independent style some people sport. Do we have to jump on every stylish trend we see? No.

There is a solution for those stuck in a style rut: Thrift for your trend. It will make your pockets happy and your insatiable style you quest.

My now favorite Goodwill located on the Upper East Side takes care of all of my style spazz outs. I will pop in on a quest for leather culottes because my favorite magazine told me to get them. Gingham print dresses that channel my inner picnic table, I may run across but deep down, I know I’ll locate something, fun and frugal and will help my style drought and keep my wallet not on empty.

Styleruts hit us in January and July, that’s when the stores start putting new merchandise on the floor, retailers know what they are doing. Don’t fall fully prey to the surge of Christmas in July fashion traps, stay calm, go thrift or reinvent your already overflowing wardrobe. Styleruts are normal for stylish people.

Goodwill Gems: Brown Leather Boots

Boots are back. From tall tackle-anything flats to ankle booties with heels three inches high, boots make everything awesome in Autumn even better. On the look out for a classic pair of seasonal kicks, our Lauren headed out to her local Goodwill (where everything will be 25% off this Monday, btw) leading to this week’s Goodwill Gem: Everyday Fall Fantastic Brown Leather Boots.

Classic, knee-high boots in a rich brown leather are the kind of wear-everywhere shoes that you can wear proudly for years.

What a girl needs. No matter who you are, your individual style, or your income level, there are a few key items that fit every woman’s wardrobe. A pair of knee-high brown leather boots with a not-too-tall heel is that kind of wardrobe staple.

Goodwill Gem: Chains as Gold as Autumn Leaves

Summer is over, but don’t hole up in your down jackets just yet – there’s still a place for summer style in the new season. With that in mind, our Lauren headed out to her local Goodwill looking for finds that would ease summer faves into autumn staples, coming back with this week’s Goodwill Gem: Chains as Gold as Autumn Leaves.

This lovely, long gold chain is the perfect thrifty find to top off all your best, most beloved layering pieces this fall.

The best looks always come from a creative incorporation of multiple styles, influences and trends, and even your season-to-season wardrobe can reflect that. With that in mind, an easy way to take your favorite summer pieces into fall is simply by layering them with other, warmer items already in your closet – and punching them up with a sweet accessory or two, of course.

This week’s find is perfect for just that purpose. This long, golden necklace is ideal for layering with all your go-to fall pieces, and with other bangles, baubles, and accessories, too. Its large linking rings grab attention, but it’s simple enough in style that you can still put it on with other pieces, without overwhelming it or any of the other items you choose to wear it with.

Goodwill Gems: End-of-Summer Ombre Shades

August already? Wowzers! While it’s sad to see a season end, it’s fantastic to notice those End of Season Sale signs pop up in your favorite stores. Goodwill’s in on it, with 25% off on Summer Apparel now through Thursday, August 9th. Our correspondent Lauren took inspiration from the seasonal sale at her local Goodwill finding this week’s sun-soaked Goodwill Gem: End-of-Summer Ombre Shades.

These shades will add an instant edge of glam city style to every ensemble in your summer wardrobe.

The perfect thing to stock up on right now? Summery accessories. Sure, the season is halfway over, but we’re not done with summer yet! There are still a few more weeks of hot, humid, sunny days ahead of us. And since now is the time that many people begin their back-to-school shopping and planning, lots of retailers (and regular shoppers like you and me) and clearing out space for fall items, meaning loads of summer accessories are making their way to thrifts like your local Goodwill, and selling stellar pieces for next to nothing!

Goodwill Gems: the Slouchy-Serious Work-Play Purse

It’s still hot as Hades, but tell that to back-to-school season. That’s right – it’s time to start prepping your wardrobe for fall. To stay ahead of the times, GoodwillNyNj’s Lauren Haslett took a trip to Goodwill to find a Gem equal parts business and casual. The result? Success!: the Slouchy-Serious Work-Play Purse.

This charming, practical tote is ideal for the upcoming season & your stylin' transition into it!

Lucky me – it turns out secondhand stores are the perfect place to look for in-between-seasons pieces. Maybe it’s because there’s such a large array of accessories (key style elements to signalling a seasonal transition), or maybe because I can afford them all – either way, I can’t complain! Proof of the Goodwill goodness:

Goodwill Gem: The Retro Purse

Summer calls for a bag that’s as easy as the rest of your cool, warm weather wardrobe. This week, GoodwillNyNj’s Lauren Haslett sashays into her local Goodwill to find her newest Goodwill Gem: the too hip to quit retro purse.

This straight-edged bag is polished in its lines and colors, but funky in its throwback shape/

This week’s fabulous find – a two-tone time-traveling leather bag – is the perfect tote to pair with your most laid-back summer essentials. Its perfectly proportioned pockets and stark rectangular shape will keep you looking professional, but the bag’s throwback appeal hints your life’s more runway than water cooler. With its structured look and classic construction, this purse adds wit and purpose to those loose, flowy seasonal pieces.

So what kind of outfit would you pair with this purse?

Goodwill Gems: Baddie Style

Forget the frills for once. As much as we all love the girly, flowery clothes that appear every summer season, it’s hard not to occasionally miss our straightforward, simple and eternally chic blacks. This summer, take a cue from GoodwillNyNj’s Lauren Haslett, head to Goodwill & fight blistering heat with a baddie outfit. This week’s Goodwill Gem: studded tough-girl shoes.

Funky, fierce, fun and cool, these strapped, studded black sandals hold a sucker punch of style.

Black clothes may not have the cheeriness of our summer frocks, but you can’t say they aren’t bold. Black makes a statement and, when worn well, is just as eye-catching as a pale sundress or brilliantly printed floral piece.

Goodwill Gems: Major Heat & Micro Heels

Summer’s fussy enough with heatwaves and thunderstorms – add a wardrobe full of one-time-wonders and you’re in a funk before you’ve even gotten dressed. Our correspondent Lauren sets out to calm her closet with a practical, wear-with-anything piece from her local Goodwill – a tried-and-true go-to for when it’s too hot to think. This week’s Goodwill Gem: micro heels.

Cute, comfy and incredibly easy to wear, these are the shoes you’ll reach for again and again.

Ah, the simple things. Wherever you find them, great wardrobe staples feel like a steal, because you end up getting so much use out of them. But they seem like an especially sweet deal when you get them for next to nothing at your favorite local Goodwill store!
