Another season, another reason

The New Centenarians – we’re celebrating our 100th with the launch of The Good Look Gal and Guy. On the first Monday of each month, we’ll feature here Goodwill store employees and customers who exemplify the very best our Goodwill stores and boutiques offer in fashion sense while still saving your hard-earned cent.

Be ready for the shifting seasons with easy pieces that will layer up or sport solo.

Where else on the Upper West Side will you find such chic value? Look no further. In this first edition, we go to our 72nd Street boutique in Manhattan to check out how you can transition that summer outfit you purchased and get mileage out of it through the chillier September nights.

Indian Summer suggests warm yet slightly crisper temps so layering is the savvy solution. Here our always comely Sales Specialist, Shayanne, pairs a floral Calvin Klein blouse, J. Crew cutoffs, and stylish Union Bay wedgies for a sidewalk stroll during the remaining sultry days.

Fall marked her debut with Goodwill last October. As her anniversary approaches, we celebrate her singular flair for melding diverse garments to create an individualistic, yet flattering allure. You must agree that opposites are extremely attractive on her!

This talented looker thinks no ensemble is complete without the right hair so she is actively pursuing a beauty license while gracing the store. And she is clearly the best judge of what enhances her svelte form – a handsome Helmut Lang jacket and Wolford tights for a sensible, yet striking autumnal transition. Then indulge in a few lustrous, bargain baubles for a little extra sparkle to cap a winning stunner that only looks rich.

“I love fashion because it allows me to express myself and to be creative with different shapes and styles. I like to combine opposite shapes with a dab of color,” says Shayanne, a Sales Specialist at Goodwill’s 72nd Street boutique since October 2014.

Shayanne’s summer outfit:

  • Calvin Klein Blouse, $9.99
  • J. Crew Shorts, $4.99

Fall outfit:

  • Helmut Lang New York Jacket, $19.99
  • Wolford Tights, $2.99
  • UnionBay shoes, $ 9.99
  • Necklace, $0.99
  • Bracelet, $0.99 the set

Goodwill Gems: Banish Gray Days for Good

Sweater weather is officially here, and many more overcast gray days are ahead. But that doesn’t mean that the outfits you wear to insulate yourself against the sunless days, snow, and drizzle need to be as blah as the weather.

To keep your spirits up and your outfits looking vibrant, even in the midst of the autumn chill, turn to bright accessories like this week’s gem. Found recently on an especially successful trip to my local Goodwill shop, this week’s find is a fiery red fabric and metal chain necklace that’s sure to boost your mood, no matter how gross the day. The style – soft, colorful fabric woven around simple metal links – is super chic and so on-trend right now. It’s also an amazingly simple kind of piece that still somehow manages to make a big style statement.

This week’s fab find – a stunning fabric and metallic necklace – is a style that’s all the rage right now. Though it’s a trendy item, it’s not too gaudy, gimmicky, or bizarre, and could easily work with a multitude of outfits for years to come.

Add a graceful twist to everyday wear. This simply elegant piece will instantly add a bit of vivacity to your favorite comfy but not quite so bright looks. A relaxed but put together ensemble like this one – consisting of a pair of soft, skinny, black velvet pants (for a little texture), a classic chambray collared shirt, and a cozy gray knit sweater on top for some extra warmth – is lovely and totally seasonally appropriate on its own. It’s completely classic, and the muted color palette would look good on just about anyone, but that little pop of brilliant red and gold this necklace could add would take it to another (much happier) level entirely. Though this outfit it effortlessly polished, you could also easily pair a woven fabric and metallic chain necklace like this one with a neutral sweater dress, boots, and tights, or any of your other go-to fall and winter looks.

This week’s fantastic gem adds a bit of freshness, liveliness and posh charm to any classic fall ensemble that needs a new breath of life, like the one pictured here.

Goodwill Gems: Golden Heels & a Happy New Year

How time flies – especially in golden heels! Fresh from her tangerine score in Astoria, our columnist Lauren headed to the Chelsea Goodwill on the hunt for a New Years’ Eve Goodwill Gem and, no surprise, she struck gold! Signature style is less costly than you think… New Year’s Eve – one of the biggest party nights of the year in this town – is just around the corner. Since those all-inclusive party packages and/or traipsing around to bar after bar on the big night out can get rather pricey, it’s lucky that you have your local Goodwill to come to your rescue! Believe it or not, it can be easy to find the finishing touches you need to complete your best New Year’s Eve ensemble yet, without spending so much you immediately regret it (along with that last bottle champagne) when January 1st rolls around.

Classic Gems at Goodwill Prices: Uptown Style with a Downtown Edge

Ever notice how a single accessory can make a look? Last week our newest columnist Lauren headed to Brooklyn’s Fulton Street Goodwill and found the perfect prim clutch to snap her floral tunic to attention. This week, our Goodwill Gem hunter headed uptown to West 79th Street Goodwill to see how a piece of costume jewelry might rumble with her downtown style. Check it out:

This classically styled piece of costume jewelry could go with almost everything in your closet!

Jewelry, I’ve found, can be a very telling; a piece of jewelry can impart a great deal of personality to a look, and many of us become very attached to our pieces because of their particular flair and feel, their value, and for sentimental reasons. When choosing any piece of jewelry, it’s crucial to think not only about the number of outfits you can accessorize with it, but also about what the piece says about you and your personality to everyone you meet.
