Pop of Color for Fall & Winter

Are you as excited as I am for the Indian Summer we’re having? I’m rejoicing over the idea of wearing some of my bright and colorful summer wardrobe well into October. But I have a feeling that the cold is going to suddenly hit us and I’m not sure if I’m ready to give up wearing bright colors just yet.

I’ve been known to stand out in a crowd of people in New York City because of my bright coats. I plan on doing the same this fall and winter and so can you! Here’s my tips for wearing color in the colder months:

Embrace a pop of color

A pop of color is always the easiest way to incorporate into your look. If you’re into wearing mostly black like most New Yorkers, try adding a bright accessory like a purse, scarf of gloves or coat with your wardrobe. I always grab this thrifted green coat at the beginning of fall and wear it well into the winter with a fun, chunky scarf and winter accessories.

Darker colors and hues count too

If bright colors aren’t quite your thing, why not try darker colors like mustard yellow, hunter green, burgundy or dark orange. These colors actually go together really well and tend to make the perfect fall outfit and look that you can incorporate into winter time.

Goodwill Gems: CRAZY for the Classics

Experimentation is fun, there’s no question. But sometimes, you just want to be able to quickly throw on an outfit that you know you’ll look and feel great in, without having to invest a lot of time and effort into putting it together.

That’s where timeless pieces like this gorgeous watch come in. Made in a mix of metals and covered with classic details, a watch like this is an elegant accessory you can use to instantly upgrade any outfit. The compass-like look of the face adds a subtle but chic bit of character to this traditional but oh-so-classy timepiece, and the stripes of gold metal throughout the mostly silver band – which look deceptively like a lovely set of ribbons – give this enduring accessory a slightly more modern and feminine feel than would a similar piece in a single color.

Though simple, this classically constructed, mixed-metal watch is a beautiful piece that will instantly add a bit of sophistication to your ensembles for years to come.

An easy but elegant backdrop. To show off this truly stunning find, I’ve chosen equally classic pieces when picking out a complementary ensemble. A fitted black sweater with a scoop neck is a winter wardrobe must-have that will never go out of style. And I’ve anchored the outfit in black-and-white skirt that’s equally flattering and timeless, in a large herringbone print. The size of the print makes the skirt feel a bit more modern, but like this week’s gem, it’s a chic staple that’s been around for decades, and which will, I’m sure, continue to be a go-to in the closets of fashionable ladies for many future seasons.

If you’re not into the Coco-inspired black-and-white look, you can always go with another pairing that’s just as perfect for the fall and winter months and always in style, like straight- or slim-cut black trousers and a loose, flowing blouse in a rich jewel tone. Or, for a more casual option, put it on with your favorite pair of jeans, a fabulous bootie, and forever-classic white tee.

The options are endless when you’re looking for outfits to pair with timeless, chic, and effortlessly elegant accessory, like the watch spotted this week at my local Goodwill shop.

My First Goodwill Experience

Last summer, before going back to school, News Channel 34 reporter Marissa Sarbak went on assignment to our Goodwill Store in Vestal NY. Marissa recounts her first time at a Goodwill store below:

“Sometimes as a college student, it’s really difficult to buy all of the clothes that you want. You really are living on a limited income, and you have to make choices. As a shopaholic, it’s always been tough for me to not blow an entire paycheck on a cute dress! So, needless to say, I was overjoyed about covering a story at the Goodwill in Binghamton, NY.

My name is Marissa Sarbak and I am a reporting intern for WIVT/WBGH News Channel 34. I’m currently a college student at SUNY Oswego, so as I said; I know what it’s like to live on a budget! I’m a Communication and Social Interaction major and an Economics minor. I’ve always been a fashionista, so when the News Director asked if I would like to cover a fashion story, I was very excited.

Fashion is a way of expressing yourself, whether it’s through brand name labels, or a designer you’ve never even heard of. Goodwill was an exciting find for me, because I’d never thought to go there before. When I went it, I was surprised to see that it was almost like a regular retail store. Everyone was very friendly, and I found some great clothes for my story! I even went back after I finished reporting to go buy some of the clothes that I had tried on. Overall, it was a great place and I will definitely be going back to find some more bargains!”

Goodwill Gems: A (New) Classic Look of Contrasts

Fall is all about impact. The fiery color of leaves contrast sharply with the crisp chill in the air, and though there’s no way we can compete with nature, we can do our best to mirror this beautiful season and represent it well in our autumn ensembles.

But sometimes, it is the simplest, subtlest pieces that somehow manage to add serious impacts to our everyday looks. These darling little sling-back heels, fashioned out of buttery soft black leather, are just one of those pieces.

Anything but basic, these beautiful black heeled shoes have style and serious sex appeal, but in a way that still manages to appear lovely and ladylike, not loud.
Anything but basic, these beautiful black heeled shoes have style and serious sex appeal, but in a way that still manages to appear lovely and ladylike, not loud.

The curving pieces of leather, slit right up the top of the shoe, and the seductive peep toe are sexy without being too gaudy or outrageous, making these cute kickers perfect for a day at the office or a glamorous night out with your girls. Equally adorable with slightly transparent stockings and a pencil skirt or with jeans, a sparkling cami and a tailored blazer, these pretty peep-toes are the perfect piece for the last warm days of fall.

To create a really balanced look that’s neither prissy nor too outrageous for everyday wear, throw on a pair of adorably classic, girly heels like these with pieces in classic cuts and fabrics, with just a bit of edgy detail to them.

Pair a bold, colorful look with something polished and ladylike.

You can never go wrong with a look composed of classic combinations and contrasting pieces, like a fully black-and-white ensemble. But to punch things up a bit for fall, I’ve swapped out the soft, cool white for a warmer red on top.

The loose, silky blouse still looks professional and ladylike, but the zippers add a bit of an edge, as do the form-fitting black velvet pants on the bottom, and these pieces set just the right mood for a look that’s topped off with my fabulous new heels.

If you’re not into the tight trousers, try pairing a nice blouse and classic wool skirt with a more modern piece, like a leather jacket, and some blingy jewelry.

Animal prints were HUGE for Fall/Winter 2010-2011, especially my all-time favorite: leopard. This year the trend is scaled down to accessories which makes it infinitely more wearable! Now, I hear you saying, “But I barely see any animal print accessories in the stores!” and that’s because they get snapped up FAST (usually by me…oops!). So keep a sharp eye out for these incredibly versatile pops of purr-fection.
