How to Transition Your Summer Wardrobe

Can you believe that summer is coming to an end? I’m a summer lover, but the idea of fall has me a bit excited. I adore everything about fall; the leaves changing, pumpkin spice, the crisp, cooler weather and most of all, fall fashion! But I’m a firm believer that there’s no need to rush into fall fashion. I’m all for wearing summer pieces for as long as possible and slowly introducing fall pieces into the mix. Here’s how I transition my summer style into fall:

Layer Up

DSC_0460.JPG

Layer sweaters, jackets, vests or over-sized shirts over summer dresses. It’s such a fun look to have your summer floral dress peeking underneath your fall leather jacket or over-sized, boyfriend jean jacket like I did with my newly thrifted red floral dress.

The Right Colors

I just brought out my fall pieces to start working them into my transitioning wardrobe. I love the idea of pastels and light colors worn with dark colors. But, I personally love my summer clothes in darker prints and colors mixed in with my fall colors. It just feels more fall especially since I have some pretty bright and obvious summer dresses. I just can’t wait to wear all my summer dresses in darker hues this fall!

Sassy, Studded Accessory Perfection

Studs aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. I know they’ve been on the fashion scene for awhile now, but they’re still popping up everywhere you look, and for good reason – they’re a simple, slightly edgy way to add some unique flair to a look, in a surprisingly understated way.

If you’re looking for a new, go-to piece you can wear with all your favorite outfits throughout the year, then look no further. This week’s fantastically versatile Goodwill gem is a seriously lucky find for the thrifty shopper, because it can literally be worn with absolutely anything. A brown leather belt is, of course, a staple item in any woman’s wardrobe, but this piece – covered in a shimmering rainbow of metallic studs – adds a bit of edgy glam to your everyday looks without going overboard. The variety of metals used will complement all sorts of different colors and makes this accessory easy to wear on an almost-daily basis. It’s an accessory you’ll go to again and again, and it’ll look fresh every time – a real bargain for the girl looking for a few functional, adaptable, but still fashionable pieces.

metallic studs on beltPractical doesn’t ever have to mean to boring. This incredibly interesting piece can work like a staple in any lady’s wardrobe, but the cool metallic studs give it a sharp, slightly glamorous feel.

Liven up a lovely (but basic) dress. Though obviously you can pair a pretty studded leather belt like this one with nearly anything, but here, I’ve chosen to put it on top of soft, grayish-blue sweater dress that’s perfect for fall. This knee-length staple would look great with a pair of classic leather riding boots, and my fabulous new find – a metallic studded belt with just enough shimmer – instead of a plain brown belt, is an ideal way to energize an otherwise basic ensemble. And because the studs are done in an array of different metals – gold, rose gold, silver, and black – it’s incredibly easy to coordinate an item like this with absolutely any piece of jewelry you might want to wear with it.

charcoal dressEffortlessly give all your everyday looks – like this sweet, feminine sweater dress – a touch of refined glamor and a bit of fun with a cool, colorful pair of shoes.

Brilliantly Easy, Bold Looks

Dark colors and denim can make a serious statement. I know I often preach about how important it is to include a little color in your wardrobe (and it is!), but as any city girl can tell you, black is, and always will be, the ultimate in wear-anywhere practicality.

So when you just can’t help but reach for those dark black staples lurking in (or possibly taking over?) your closet, how do you still ensure your ensemble stands out? That’s where accessories – like this week’s gorgeous Goodwill-found gems – come in. These plush purple high heels have a rich, beautiful color and retro style that’s sure to grab attention, even when you pair them with other dark pieces. The royally rad hue of these shoes is also lovely because it goes just as well with any other neutral hue as it does with black – put these pretty pumps on with beige, navy, white, brown – the options are endless, and whatever you choose, they’re sure to look absolutely darling.

purple pumpsA girl can never have enough shoes – especially when the latest thrifty find in Goodwill’s shoe department is a wonderfully polished pair of purple suede pumps like these, sure to catch every passerby’s eye.

Go bold or go home.  But going bold doesn’t have to mean super glammed up, over-the-top outfits or huge pieces of sparkling jewelry. Bold can actually be incredibly simple – and honestly, a perfectly picked ensemble, all in stark black, is an easy way to go bold while keeping things low-key and classy, too. Here, I’ve chosen a fitted pair of figure-flattering black pants and topped it off with a simply cut black tank. To ward off the chilly October winds, I’ve added a tailored denim blazer – the cut of this jean jacket makes it look a little more professional, but any other classic denim cover-up would look just as cute here. The purple pumps will add the only spot of color (much-needed, I might add), but since they’re also on the darker side of the color spectrum, they still manage to give the look that burst of color in a subtle, sophisticated kind of way. One long, statement necklace or pretty printed scarf would add a lovely finishing touch to this ensemble (but is totally optional – the look still looks totally put together and polished without anything else).

all-black and denim ensemble Effortlessly give all your basic looks – like this all-black and denim ensemble – a touch of refined glamor and a bit of  fun with a cool, colorful pair of shoes.

Fresh, Funky Fashion Twists

Practical doesn’t mean boring. I might say this almost every week, but it’s still just as true today as it was this past summer, last spring, or the previous winter.

This week’s fabulously fun gem will truly put some extra pep in your step and add some seriously jewel-like sparkle to any outfit. These brilliant sequined pink sneakers are the perfect way to put a fresh spin on your usual choices in casual wear.  The sequins might seem flashy, but if you’re in need of a bit of fun and still want to wear something comfy and suited for your more relaxed ensembles, then a pair of sneakers like these are exactly what you’re looking for.

pink sequin shoesThese pretty pink sequined shoes are anything but fancy – but they’re a great way to add a bit of flair and a playful sense of fun to an otherwise basic outfit.

Class up your casual wear.  Sequins could seem like a bit much (especially for daytime), but they’re actually a super chic and modern way to dress up your everyday looks. As long as you put this loud-ish pair of shoes on with some more demure or classic wardrobe pieces, they actually make a perfect match. Here, I’ve paired them in a simple, slim-cut pair of navy trousers in a soft, brushed cotton fabric that’s fabulously cozy and just right for fall. A loose but lacy blouse in a soothing shade of cream contrasts beautifully with the dark navy on the bottom, but is still nice and neutral and won’t clash with my vibrant pink footwear. A classically cut denim blazer will keep me warm in the midst of the early October chill, but again, is a neutral fabric that won’t fight with the oh-so-fabulous sequined shoes – which will instantly jazz up this otherwise unassuming outfit.

lacy shirt dark pants comboAdd a touch of girly glam to absolutely any outfit, no matter how plain or practical, with these spiffed up pink sequined sneakers.

Fall Into Fresh Fashions

Lighten up your cold-weather layers. Once an autumn chill starts working its way into the air on a regular basis, it’s easy to suddenly feel weighed down by all the layers you have to wear and carry with you on a daily basis.

This week’s pretty find is truly a gem – these high-heeled booties are classy, classic, and ideal for that transitional period between the end of summer and full-on cold weather. The structured style and smooth, soft ivory leather upper will never, ever go out of style, and the thick, chunky heel looks wonderfully clean and well-designed, but also happens to be amazingly comfortable, too (at least when compared to a skinny stiletto heel).

light beige bootiesIn lovely soft, light beige color hue and totally timeless style, these booties are the perfect fall purchase. They’ll add a fashionable touch to your favorite outfits for years to come!

Dress up a basic but beautifully polished getup. There’s really no ensemble these boots wouldn’t look absolutely amazing with – go casual with a loose, comfy pair of jeans (even a pair with some strategically placed rips or fading, for an edgier feel) and a favorite tee, and add a blazer on top for a casually chic look. For a much dressier outfit you could easily wear to a corporate event or networking drinks session, put on this perfectly put together pair with a favorite, flattering cocktail dress in basically any color – whether you’re the kind of city girl who always favors black or loves a shockingly vibrant color, these booties will complement your choice beautifully. But here, I haven’t gone completely casual or dramatically dressy here – in my chosen look, I’ve gone for an outfit that’s totally refined tasteful everyday look that is comfortable enough for fun day out but polished enough for the office. A pleated knee-length skirt in an oh-so-professional navy linen is another classic piece that every girl could use in her wardrobe – the neutral navy hue looks lovely next to this week’s Goodwill gem, but would look equally nice next to just about anything else. A simple white blouse allows the flirty skirt and fun shoes to shine, and topped with a go-to cardi or tailored blazer, this look is complete is no time.

monochromatic outfitAdd a classic touch to any look in your fall closet with minimal effort – this week’s fabulous Goodwill gem is the kind of sophisticated wardrobe staple that will make any outfit – from the super casual to the professional to the posh – feel completely gorgeous and chic.

The Best Way to Hang Onto Summer Styles

Lighter colors work well for fall, too. Believe it or not, just because the temperatures have dropped, it’s not a mandate to immediately start wearing black all day, every day (though it might be hard to tell that there’s any other color when you’re walking through the city these days).

This week’s darling gem – a pair of pretty wedge platforms – has a free-spirited feeling to it that easily recalls those summer months full of sunshine and trips to the beach, but because they’re totally close-toed, they’re still way appropriate for fall’s cooler weather. The neutral linen fabric on top – so much like washed-out sand along a coastline – and the woven wedge heel will actually pair beautifully with loads of warm autumn colors, like rich reds and burgundies, beautiful vibrant oranges, and soft, soothing browns and grays.

textured wedge heelsIn a pretty neutral hue with a fun textured heel, these delightful wedges will easily carry you from late summer to fall.

Experiment with a go-to ensemble. Sometimes, we really want to play with what we wear; it can be a fantastic form of creative expression. But sometimes, you just need to get out the door, ASAP, looking reasonably sane and put together, and without a lot of fuss. For those mornings, dear friends, I have the perfect fall getup that will keep you looking classy and feeling comfortable. Enter the foolproof jeans + blazer + uber-pretty printed scarf combo. You can wear favorite pair of jeans, whatever those might be (though I will add a caveat here and note that, for anything resembling a professional or slightly dressed up but still casual affair, please at least consider going with a darker wash and a straight cut – it just looks more grown-up). Top with any basic tee (the shirt really isn’t the focal point here), your most tailored blazer in a neutral hue (I’ve chosen a nice beige to sort of echo the linen in my darling new shoes), and use another accessory – a gorgeous printed scarf – to really add a bit of color, a bold print, and some serious flair to an otherwise simple look. Swap shoes and scarves as you see fit, but this no-fail ensemble (like most of my favorites) relies entirely on the accessories to give it a punch of personality, rather than the main pieces, which are actually quite basic.

fall outfitPunch up your go-to fall basics with bright, beautiful accessories and a fabulous pair of wedges, like this week’s incredible Goodwill find, for an amazingly effortless outfit that will have you looking polished and pulled together in no time.

Goodwill Gems: Banish Gray Days for Good

Sweater weather is officially here, and many more overcast gray days are ahead. But that doesn’t mean that the outfits you wear to insulate yourself against the sunless days, snow, and drizzle need to be as blah as the weather.

To keep your spirits up and your outfits looking vibrant, even in the midst of the autumn chill, turn to bright accessories like this week’s gem. Found recently on an especially successful trip to my local Goodwill shop, this week’s find is a fiery red fabric and metal chain necklace that’s sure to boost your mood, no matter how gross the day. The style – soft, colorful fabric woven around simple metal links – is super chic and so on-trend right now. It’s also an amazingly simple kind of piece that still somehow manages to make a big style statement.

fabric metallic necklace
This week’s fab find – a stunning fabric and metallic necklace – is a style that’s all the rage right now. Though it’s a trendy item, it’s not too gaudy, gimmicky, or bizarre, and could easily work with a multitude of outfits for years to come.

Add a graceful twist to everyday wear. This simply elegant piece will instantly add a bit of vivacity to your favorite comfy but not quite so bright looks. A relaxed but put together ensemble like this one – consisting of a pair of soft, skinny, black velvet pants (for a little texture), a classic chambray collared shirt, and a cozy gray knit sweater on top for some extra warmth – is lovely and totally seasonally appropriate on its own. It’s completely classic, and the muted color palette would look good on just about anyone, but that little pop of brilliant red and gold this necklace could add would take it to another (much happier) level entirely. Though this outfit it effortlessly polished, you could also easily pair a woven fabric and metallic chain necklace like this one with a neutral sweater dress, boots, and tights, or any of your other go-to fall and winter looks.

This week’s fantastic gem adds a bit of freshness, liveliness and posh charm to any classic fall ensemble that needs a new breath of life, like the one pictured here.

Goodwill Gems: A (New) Classic Look of Contrasts

Fall is all about impact. The fiery color of leaves contrast sharply with the crisp chill in the air, and though there’s no way we can compete with nature, we can do our best to mirror this beautiful season and represent it well in our autumn ensembles.

But sometimes, it is the simplest, subtlest pieces that somehow manage to add serious impacts to our everyday looks. These darling little sling-back heels, fashioned out of buttery soft black leather, are just one of those pieces.

Anything but basic, these beautiful black heeled shoes have style and serious sex appeal, but in a way that still manages to appear lovely and ladylike, not loud.
Anything but basic, these beautiful black heeled shoes have style and serious sex appeal, but in a way that still manages to appear lovely and ladylike, not loud.

The curving pieces of leather, slit right up the top of the shoe, and the seductive peep toe are sexy without being too gaudy or outrageous, making these cute kickers perfect for a day at the office or a glamorous night out with your girls. Equally adorable with slightly transparent stockings and a pencil skirt or with jeans, a sparkling cami and a tailored blazer, these pretty peep-toes are the perfect piece for the last warm days of fall.

To create a really balanced look that’s neither prissy nor too outrageous for everyday wear, throw on a pair of adorably classic, girly heels like these with pieces in classic cuts and fabrics, with just a bit of edgy detail to them.
To create a really balanced look that’s neither prissy nor too outrageous for everyday wear, throw on a pair of adorably classic, girly heels like these with pieces in classic cuts and fabrics, with just a bit of edgy detail to them.

Pair a bold, colorful look with something polished and ladylike.

You can never go wrong with a look composed of classic combinations and contrasting pieces, like a fully black-and-white ensemble. But to punch things up a bit for fall, I’ve swapped out the soft, cool white for a warmer red on top.

The loose, silky blouse still looks professional and ladylike, but the zippers add a bit of an edge, as do the form-fitting black velvet pants on the bottom, and these pieces set just the right mood for a look that’s topped off with my fabulous new heels.

If you’re not into the tight trousers, try pairing a nice blouse and classic wool skirt with a more modern piece, like a leather jacket, and some blingy jewelry.

Goodwill Gems: Brown Leather Boots

Boots are back. From tall tackle-anything flats to ankle booties with heels three inches high, boots make everything awesome in Autumn even better. On the look out for a classic pair of seasonal kicks, our Lauren headed out to her local Goodwill (where everything will be 25% off this Monday, btw) leading to this week’s Goodwill Gem: Everyday Fall Fantastic Brown Leather Boots.

Classic, knee-high boots in a rich brown leather are the kind of wear-everywhere shoes that you can wear proudly for years.

What a girl needs. No matter who you are, your individual style, or your income level, there are a few key items that fit every woman’s wardrobe. A pair of knee-high brown leather boots with a not-too-tall heel is that kind of wardrobe staple.
