Something New, Borrowed, Old, and Goodwill Blue

Finding the love of your life is a lot like thrifting. First you enter without knowing what you’re looking for. All you know is that once you see it, you’ll know it’s the one. Everything in the store is unique; each item is different and has its own history. You scour through countless racks and bins in search of what would fit perfectly into your life. You never lose hope, despite all the far and near misses.

But you’ve managed to do what some people deem impossible. You’ve found the needle in the haystack… Waldo… your soul mate! Now all that is left to do is marry him/her. This is where you’ll find yourself back at the thrift store. Not the metaphorical one about love. That part is thankfully over. We’re talking the real physical thrift store, your local Goodwill.

Goodwill can help you find the most important thing you’re ever going to wear, your wedding dress! The gravity and seriousness of finding a great gown does not equate having to spend a hefty dime. Goodwill’s bridal selection gives you an immense variety for a fraction of the cost. We’ve listed a few frocks to woo you.

This is a floor length Judd Waddell dress in the size 6.  The silhouette is ballgown with a fitted bodice and a full skirt. It has sweetheart neckline, beaded natural waist, and a tulle skirt.

This is a floor length Allure Bridals dress in the size 10. It has a trumpet silhouette and a v-neckline. The details on this dress are immense, having everything ranging from lace to a textured skirt and train. It comes with a partially beaded belt for an extra amount of sparkle.

This is a floor length Kelly Faetanini dress in the size 6. This dress is the perfect about of subtly and drama. The floral-eqsue pattern wrapped around the classic plain satin is both elegant and fashion forward.

Visit Goodwill when you’re on the prowl for your wedding dress. You won’t only be saying yes to a dress. You’ll also be saying yes to sustainable fashion and helping the community. It’s everything you could want in a dress and then some more.

When you #ShopGoodwill , not only will you look good, you’ll feel good, too! Because your purchases support Goodwill’s programs and services. Head here to find GoodwillNYNJ store locations near you!

By Suma Kaul,

I have a mini confession to make and warning, you may roll your eyes at me. Here we go…

When I was younger, I had this thing. It was a terrible thing and it was also a very expensive thing. Every time I attended an event or wedding, I had to wear a new dress.

Three Dress Styles That Flatter All Body Types

Peplum Shift and Wrap Dresses

Though it has not officially arrived yet, it feels like the busy summer season is already here, with proms, graduations and weddings in full force. Dress shopping for all of these special occasions doesn’t have to be stressful. I’ve picked out three silhouettes that work well for pretty much all body types.

1. Peplum
The peplum dress accentuates your figure. It slims down your waist and highlights your hips. Depending on your body size you can go for a mini-pep that won’t distract or overwhelm your frame or a bigger peplum to accentuate your frame.

2. Shift
The shape of this dress works on almost all body shapes. The relaxed fit along with the body skimming silhouette highlight and hide all the ride spots. This is a very popular dress style that you can find with long, short, cap or tank sleeves for whichever compliment you best.

3. Wrap
2014 marks the 40th Anniversary of the wrap dress known as the most figure-flattering dress created by designer Diane Von Furstenberg. This style looks good on all body types and does wonders to show off the female shape. You can’t go wrong with it!

What is your go-to special occasion dress style?

Don’t forget you can always visit your local Goodwill Store to shop for dresses!

Special Edition: LIVE from New York Fashion Week!

New York Fashion Week

Yes, I am HERE and reporting LIVE from the epicenter of fashion: New York City and the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week! This event, which runs from February 6-13, is held at Lincoln Center. Some of the biggest names in fashion will show their Fall/Winter 2014 collections.

New York Fashion WeekIn this two-part #NYFW series, I’ll highlight not only the runway trends of the “big” players we all know in fashion, but also on the street style, new designers embracing sustainability, and the fresh details that make this event a whirlwind of “seen and be seen” photo ops!

David Ryan SmithThe ever talented David Ryan Smith makes an appearance at #NYFW!

It’s not like we’re all going to be wearing Duckie Brown neon green pants anytime soon, but it’s always fun taking a walk on fashion’s wild side!

For now, less talk and let’s revel in the eye-candy and links to some of the designers making the kickoff a blast!

Monique Lhuillier
Dedicated to sophisticated luxury, with divine gowns worn by A-list celebrities, this is a line worth daydreaming about wearing.

Alexander McQueenAlexander McQueen
Kate Moss + McQueen = fashion legends creating some imagery bound to have the fashionistas talking! McQueen’s iconic shapes and forms live on and it’s easy to see why, he was a mastermind of not only couture but fitting the female form in an almost mythological way. Every runway show I’ve had the pleasure of attending has been a cinematographic feast!

BCBG: YES it’s an ORANGE jumpsuit making headlines! When actress Samira Wiley showed up at the runway show last night, tongues went wagging and photos were taken, all touting, “Orange is the NEW Black!” Well, we can’t be sure if it has staying power, but we do know, BCBG does, and judging by its new pieces, that’s not changing anytime soon!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
Stay tuned for Part 2 LIVE from #NYFW as I do some fun shopping of my own, talk with talented fashion designers with a focus on sustainability and show you some Goodwill Insider ways to make NYFW looks your own without the killer price tags!

Also, keep an eye for me on Twitter @PlanetBrandee #GWInsider as I take you to the streets of Lincoln Center for pictures of fashionistas on the scene and on the town!

Till next time, see you on the runway!
