Can you believe that summer is pretty much gone? Temperatures in New York City have already dropped and we’re already starting to grab our fall fashion essentials. But who doesn’t love fall fashion? Fall is magical in New York and dressing for it can be too! Here are three fall must haves that every fashionista needs to have in her closet for this fall:

Jean Jacket

There’s nothing more versatile and easier to wear than a jean jacket. It should be illegal to not own at least one. I have about five in my closet in different washes and styles. I love throwing them on with dress pants and over date night dresses when the temperature starts to dip down in the fall.

Scarf

Scarves of all sizes and in all prints and colors are a must-have for throwing over your shoulders or tying around your neck to create the perfect fall look. Pair your favorite scarf with a long sleeve t-shirt for the most adorable fall look.

Backpack

Nothing says fall like a backpack. I have a million of them and get nostalgic when getting a new one for the fall season. There are so many super adorable ones around these days in a variety of colors, styles, and materials. Try trading in your over-sized purse for a backpack and turn heads while you head stylishly into fall.

How to Transition Your Summer Wardrobe

Can you believe that summer is coming to an end? I’m a summer lover, but the idea of fall has me a bit excited. I adore everything about fall; the leaves changing, pumpkin spice, the crisp, cooler weather and most of all, fall fashion! But I’m a firm believer that there’s no need to rush into fall fashion. I’m all for wearing summer pieces for as long as possible and slowly introducing fall pieces into the mix. Here’s how I transition my summer style into fall:

Layer Up

Layer sweaters, jackets, vests or over-sized shirts over summer dresses. It’s such a fun look to have your summer floral dress peeking underneath your fall leather jacket or over-sized, boyfriend jean jacket like I did with my newly thrifted red floral dress.

The Right Colors

I just brought out my fall pieces to start working them into my transitioning wardrobe. I love the idea of pastels and light colors worn with dark colors. But, I personally love my summer clothes in darker prints and colors mixed in with my fall colors. It just feels more fall especially since I have some pretty bright and obvious summer dresses. I just can’t wait to wear all my summer dresses in darker hues this fall!

Shining Shining Shining: Back to School Metallics

Individuality is important. As you go through your years in school, you’ll find yourself shying away from fitting in and suddenly find yourself embracing being the center of attention. One way to start that transition is with fashion!

Fashion is all about having fun! And what’s more fun than metallics and shimmer. One of the hottest fashion trends right now is metallics. Most people think of wearing shimmery dresses and shine only during the holiday season. I’ve always loved seeing touches of glitter, metallic and lurex during the day. How stunning and refreshing is a cute metallic skirt with a blazer or dresses down with a jean jacket? It is definitely a unique look that is both eye-catching and appropriate for school. The versatility of the look is perfect because it can be dressed down for school and dressed up for after school activities like a chic hangout with friends.

Lately, we’ve seen metallic and the shimmery look in so many new ways and colors. The sky is truly the limit with how you can wear and style this look. If the idea of wearing shimmer during the day or even in the evening seems like too much, here are two ways to easily jump into the trend for look to wear to class.

Jean Jacket to help Dress Down

Metallics and shimmer pieces can be a bit loud. Dress them down with a jean jacket for a fun look that still let’s your shine and sparkle shine through. Have fun mixing different jean washes with your fun glittery and sparkly pieces.

Cute Sweater

I love the look of a long sweater over a long dress or skirt. I found a number of amazing metallic and shimmery dresses on a recent shopping trip to a nearby Goodwill. All of these super adorable dresses could be worn with either cropped or long sweaters in solids or prints.

Dream On: Goodwill Finds as Comfy as Your Comforter

Wish you could just stay in bed some mornings? GoodwillNyNj Style Icon David Morgan understands. While you can’t take your snuggie to the board room (at least we can’t…), a comfy-as-a-comforter thrift find might just be the next best thing:

Seeking shelter from the everyday storm...

School makes me want to crawl into a hole and not come out. Each morning, I wish my bed could somehow magically appear in my classes — with me in it. I don’t want to get up! Luckily, I found this super-warm coat from a thrift store that makes it seem as if I never left my cozy covers.

The Uptown Girl Gives Back (and the Goods Go to You!)

Just like that, and it’s fall. Did you sense the cold coming? Or like us, were you caught gallivanting outside in your t-shirts when, KA-BAM, October arrived? Well, a new climate calls for a new closet – which means it’s the perfect time to thin your summer selections down to the essentials and an incredibly good opportunity to pick up inexpensive styles now being donated at Goodwill.

Let us show you what we mean with this month’s…Donation Station: The Uptown Girl Gives Back.

Meet our uptown girl Sasha! (And check out that comfy winter top she's wearing. Secret insider information: she's donating that, too, to Goodwill...)

To celebrate the amazing renovation of our Washington Heights Goodwill store (open now on 181st St!), we decided to enlist a Fashionista-comme-Frugalista living in uptown NYC. We were in search of someone with a lot to give – and the wish to give back. Our friend Sasha enjoys style, but she’s also a big fan of saving money and making the world a better place (and who doesn’t love that?).

With Fall speeding around the corner, she was ready to let us into her closet – and to send some pieces packing to a Goodwill store near you!

And for all you Uptown dwellers, go check out your new and improved (and, frankly, incredibly well-stocked) Washington Heights Goodwill Store at 514 West 181 Street between Audobon Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan, NYC.
