Rosie the Riveter is the coolest girl power icon there is! Just about everyone knows the famous We Can Do it! Poster. The Rosie the Riveter Halloween costume happens to be one of the easiest DIY costumes ever. You can use items that you already have in your closet or you can easily thrift what you need. You’ll surely use and wear them again. Here’s what you need for your DIY Rosie the Riveter costume:

Outfit

The outfit is the easiest part for this costume. Any jean on jean look can work – a jean jumpsuit, jeans worn with a jean shirt, jean overalls. I wore a pair of jeans with a jean shirt tied at the waist.

Accessories

The red bandana really makes this costume. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a red bandana but I used a pink one that I had in my stash of scarves instead. You can use a bandana of any size as a head wrap or even wear as a head turban style that covers the entire head. For shoes you can do boots, converse or any flat shoes.

Make Up & Hair

You can wear your hair up in a ponytail and create a retro look with a tiny bump at the front of the hair or rolled bangs. After researching this Halloween costume, I found that wearing your hair out is totally fine also.

I’m so into retro make up and wore cat eyeliner and red lipstick to capture the look from the famous We Can Do It! Poster.

3 Fall Must Haves

Can you believe that summer is pretty much gone? Temperatures in New York City have already dropped and we’re already starting to grab our fall fashion essentials. But who doesn’t love fall fashion? Fall is magical in New York and dressing for it can be too! Here are three fall must haves that every fashionista needs to have in her closet for this fall:

Jean Jacket

jean-jacket

There’s nothing more versatile and easier to wear than a jean jacket. It should be illegal to not own at least one. I have about five in my closet in different washes and styles. I love throwing them on with dress pants and over date night dresses when the temperature starts to dip down in the fall.

Scarf

Scarves of all sizes and in all prints and colors are a must-have for throwing over your shoulders or tying around your neck to create the perfect fall look. Pair your favorite scarf with a long sleeve t-shirt for the most adorable fall look.

Backpack

Nothing says fall like a backpack. I have a million of them and get nostalgic when getting a new one for the fall season. There are so many super adorable ones around these days in a variety of colors, styles, and materials. Try trading in your over-sized purse for a backpack and turn heads while you head stylishly into fall.

Goodwill Gems: Mad for Bags!

Bags, Bags, Bags!

I am firmly of the belief that a fashionable lady can never (NEVER!) have too many handbags — which anyone who has followed this blog for any length of time is probably already very well aware of by now. But, in the spirit of spring cleaning — Goodwill NYNJ has a fabulous donation drive happening with Uber on Saturday, 5/21, if any of you all are in a similar spot! — and finally, finally getting my space in order, I am trying to pare down my pretty substantial accessory collection and only keep the items I really, truly need.

But of course, as soon as I resolved to not buy another item for at least a month, I spotted this beauty this Goodwill NYNJ’s Livingston St. store in Brooklyn!

IMG_8632

I mean, COME ON! A real-deal Marc Jacobs bag and it was marked at only $25! What a steal! It was in great shape (as you can clearly see) and also just happened to be in a palette of mixed neutrals — which, as you also know if you’ve been following this blog at all over the past few years, is pretty much everything I love.

Obviously, I could not say no.

But, I’m justifying this fabulous purchase by getting rid of other things I already own and don’t wear as much — and I can feel good about doing that now, because this beautiful bag is going to go with absolutely everything.

With a cute white tee and cool black shades (my go-to summer combo!)? Check.

With a sleek, chic floral sundress, just right for a fancy summer night out? Check.

With a too-cool-for-school look like this combo of trendy poncho, old sneakers and lacey mini? Check.

Basically, there’s nothing this fabulous bag wouldn’t complement or look incredibly awesome with. And that’s the whole point right? Clean out your closets of all the things you don’t use just sitting there, collecting dust — if you’re in the five boroughs, I highly recommend taking advantage of our Uber promo and getting a FREE donation pickup this Saturday, 5/21! Then, buy fewer, but way more beautiful things (like this gorgeous thrifted purse!) that you’ll love for years and wear again, and again … and again.

Goodwill Gems: Stylish Spring Shoes

Hello, fashion-forward friends!

I’m back with another week of Goodwill Gems and cannot WAIT to share what I’ve found this week! While thrifting at GoodwillNYNJ’s Chelsea location in Manhattan, I was lucky enough to stumble across row after row (after row!) of completely fabulous shoes.

thumb_IMG_8239_1024

There were tons of cute heels, in all colors of the rainbow, and most in pretty mint condition, so it was really hard for me to select just one pair.

But of course, I had to pick one to post about (at least for this week’s blog update). And as much I love all that vibrant, happy color you see in the photo above, in true Goodwill Gem fashion, I went for something pretty but also practical, that I knew I would wear again and again and again!

thumb_IMG_8226_1024

These Kenneth Cole Reaction heels have slight platform for comfort and a super chic look, thanks to the skinny heels and understated linen upper. The neutral fabric that makes up most of this shoe isn’t as bright or wonderfully loud as the other colorful heels I spotted during my thrifting trip, but this is the kind of shoe that will go with absolutely everything in your spring and summer wardrobes! Plus, it was in almost perfect condition and looked like it had hardly been worn at all — serious Gem alert!

thumb_IMG_4875_1024

So, how to style this too-cute shoe? EASY. You could pair these babies with everything from fancy cocktail dresses to casual summer sundresses to a classic jeans-and-white-tee-shirt look. They’re incredibly versatile, which is what makes them such an insane bargain and lucky find! But here, I’ve chosen to pair these pretty heels with a bright yellow, breezy summer skirt (also found at Goodwill!) and a couple of layered gray and white tanks. Easy, cool, comfy and still totally cute, and adding my newly found heels will take this otherwise casual look up to a slightly more polished level.

@PlanetBrandee Is Back!

Hello, again, friends and followers.

Recently, we made an announcement, which turned out to be slightly premature. We told you we were moving our blogs — including this very blog, A Good Look — over to our organization’s main website at www.goodwillnynj.org.

But then, friends, you gave us some feedback. You let us know that you missed having A Good Look and one of its most fabulous, most fun bloggers — Brandee Sanders (aka @PlanetBrandee) right here!

So, without waiting too long to right this wrong, we’ve brought A Good Look and @PlanetBrandee back! If you’re also a follower of our other blog, Where the Goodwill Goes, you can still find those fantastically informative posts over in the News & Events section of our main website going forward. But for all things related to thrifty fashion and A Good Look, please stay right here!

And without further ado, here’s the latest update from the lovely Brandee Sanders!

_____

@PlanetBrandee Part 1: Your Guide to Mystic March

(Or, how I school you in the ways of building your own wanderlust gypsy witch wardrobe!)

_____

planet-brandee-march-4-blog-post-img

Pop quiz, my fashion freaks – answer truthfully!

Have you ever, or do you still own a black trench coat, pointed hat, batwing dress or caftan of any kind?

Do you adore Stevie Knicks, watch the Originals and/or have you done Rhiannon as a karaoke song?

Do you burn incense, love Tarot or LIVE for a good essential oil?

Do you know The Craft movie line by line?

Do you know your sign and/or are you one of those people getting daily horoscopes?

Lastly — black mid thigh boots, oversized rings, vintage 90’s, what say you: yay or nay?

If you’ve answered YES to any of the above, then you’re in LUCK because my next travel adventure has me gallivanting off into the desert sunset abroad – and in prepping, I realized my luggage and closet are fairly mystical!

And a little magic never hurt anyone so hold on little witches! We’re going to trek into the fog machine running, right into the huge, ringed world of Mystical March! This 4-part series will take you on the dramatic and often fab world of dressing to invoke the fashion spirits.

Part 1: Intro and The Basics of Witchy Wardrobes

Part 2: RINGS for your LIFE

Part 3: Vintage Velvet Redux

(And finally) Part 4: Crafting Realness

So for Part 1, I give you these gifs as your inspiration! I hope you’re excited for the summons next week!

Firstly, it helps to start off with the simple things, like strong arches and killer brows, like our girl Morticia:

Secondly, keep your monochromatic and/or dark jewel tone game on point, like this little witch, who is bringing in spring like a goth champ ala 1999:

Thirdly, can we get a little gossamer diaphanous Sleepy Hollow cloak-esque love in? Romantic, dark mystery gazing isn’t just for October!

And yes, before you crumble at the thought of white, it’s not just for wedding!

And lastly, keep in mind that you need to OWN the look if you plan on rocking it all. If you’re not Stevie, then go Katy Perry car wreck DRAMA. ALL in:

SO: Do you love like Morticia? Walk for abreast like The Craft? Dig the amulet zen? Snap a pic and share it with me for a chance to be featured! And stay tuned for my next #travel #adventure in April, which has me going to a new destination, but shhhh, that’s STILL secret for now!

Till then, follow my food, fun and travel treks on Twitter and Instagram @PlanetBrandee and see you on the streets!
