Leopard & Cheetah & Zebra, Oh My!

You know what’s rad? Prints! From leopard to stripes to floral to paisley. Prints, though repetitive in nature, can be very bold. With bold visual power comes the feeling to default to pairing a print with a basic. But I say, if you’re going to run, you might as well run for gold! Go all out with your prints. Mix and match to your heart’s content.

I’m not one who believes there are too many rules when it comes to fashion. But if you’d like to avoid the stares of the less fashionable, there are some ways to make print-mixing wearable.

  • Size Does Matter!

Dots and stripes go well together. Think PB&J. Bert and Ernie. Dots and stripes were simply meant to be. But like a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich, there must be balance. One cannot overpower the other. If you’re going for this classic look, pay attention to the sizing of these prints so that one doesn’t steal the show.

  • Respect the Animal Kingdom

If you’re going to sport a leopard please don’t bring a poor little zebra to the party. Predator and prey shouldn’t live in the same wardrobe. Plus animal prints are very bold and could stand to pair themselves with a more understated pattern such as checkered squares or floral.

  • Be Color Conscious

If you’re truly afraid of print mixing, be mindful of your colors. You can never go wrong with the classic black and white palette. Fall shades such as browns, yellow and reds make for great bedfellows. And when in doubt stick to the mutual color found in each pattern.

Don’t be afraid to go all high fashion with your prints. Remember, getting dressed is an expression of you so show out! Slay!
