Lauren’s Goodwill Gems: Achieve Cold-Weather Cool

Looking good in the middle of winter is no easy feat. Dry skin, chapped lips, and the need for lots of layers and bulky, wooly clothes isn’t exactly a recipe for fashion fabulousness. But believe it or not, it IS possible to still look and feel great, even in the midst of the blizzard-like conditions we’ve been suffering through lately in the Tri-State area.

The secret? Stop fighting it. You can’t look or feel your best if you’re absolutely freezing cold, either, so it’s crucial to find a happy medium – clothes and accessories appropriate for winter conditions that still look cute. Do such pieces actually exist, you ask?

Yup, they so do. Take, for example, this sweet pair of sneaker booties (that’s a real kind of shoe, right?) spotted recently at my local Goodwill thrift shop. The thick rubber soles provide traction and protect feet from cold and snow. But the playful metallic detailing on the Velcro and tongue and shiny honeycomb-like pattern on the fabric uppers make these shoes not only comfy and practical, but also still incredibly fun to wear.

Who says your winter wardrobe has to be drab? Take your cold-weather gear up a notch but purchasing a pair of shoes that’s both fun and totally fit for cold, wet winter weather.

Layer up the smart way. When it’s totally frigid and there’s two feet of snow outside, there’s no way to avoid wearing more than one layer of clothing – it’s just mandatory. But you can stay warm and cozy without feeling like a giant sweater monster. If you want to minimize bulkiness and still create a sleek look, even during the worst weather, first pile on a few layers of lighter, more form-fitting attire, like a tank and a t-shirt. Even though it’s not super heavy material, putting on more than one layer closer to the body will definitely help keep your toasty. Then, top off your ensemble with a chic, tailored blazer in a heavier fabric like wool or velvet to keep you snug, but still allow you to look like you have a shape! And when paired with some cool and casual high-top sneakers or booties like the ones I’ve found on my thrifting excursion this week, you’ve got a cold-weather appropriate outfit that’s still totally cool and on trend, and polished enough for a snowy day out on the town with friends or a necessary trek through tundra-like conditions to work. Either way, you’re ready for anything – and still looking completely adorable.

Keep your cool this winter by pairing fun, playful, but still-sturdy shoes like the ones I spotted this week at my local Goodwill with practical, layered outfit – basics topped with a sleek, fitted blazer are always an easy way to put together a totally polished and cozy ensemble.
