Guest Blogger Shaunya: Why January is One of the Best Months for Thrift Store Shopping

Thrift Shop CollageJanuary is not only the time of the year when we kick-off New Year’s Resolutions; it is also one of the months when the inventory of thrift stores is more plentiful. Thrifters, vintage collectors and professional shoppers know that in January, thrift stores carry the cream of the crop. We’re not only talking about clothes, as this week between Christmas and New Year’s people are usually off from work and they use this time to do massive purges, not just clothing but books, toys and even furniture.

As we wind down 2013, many of us are clearing out our closets, donating our gently worn clothing that is too tight, too big or maybe too hard to fill in the blank.

Also, you can get tax receipts when you donate to nonprofit thrift stores like Goodwill. Tax receipts that we can use when we file our 2013 taxes as late as April. These last minute tax deductions have many creative folks dropping off bags of unwanted new or still usable clothing and household goods to their local Goodwill’s, making the local stores racks bursting at the seams with new found treasures.

In January, I go on the hunt for coats and evening wear. My aunt looks for crystal and china, a college friend seeks large pieces of furniture like armoires and rocking chairs. Also, if you know someone who claims that can never find anything in a thrift store, January is the month to introduce a weary companion to the joy of thrifting. It can be the introduction to spendthrifts too. Start the New Year off right, shopping thrift. You’ll donate to a good cause, but most importantly, save money and the planet!
