Remember GoodwillNyNj Style Icon Maria from Little Tree Vintage? Well, lucky us: she’s back at A Good Look by GoodwillNyNj with thrifting tips to help make your secondhand closet as bedazzled with new-to-you flare as her own. Take a look!:

Hi everyone, I am Maria from Little Tree Vintage and I am so happy to be sharing some of my thrifting tips with you guys today. If you have any other tips, feel free to leave a comment so I can read what you guys think!

1. Be Patient

You’re going to walk in and chances are there will be a MILLION things to look through. You have to have the patience to look through the racks, and truly take your time, or else you might miss something. If you have the time, space out a few hours and you can really get some quality thrifting in.

If you’re on a time constraint, make a list of what you’re looking for, and then you can have a better idea of where to go, and what to keep in mind so you don’t loose track once you get in there. Thrifting can be scary when you aren’t expecting to walk into a full store of things. There’s a lot of digging that goes into finding treasures.

2. Always Wash Your Clothing Once Bought

This might seem like an easy tip, but most people forget that the clothing on these racks is sometimes sitting there for a long time. If you own an etsy shop like me, cleaning is a MUST. You want your clothing to be clean & ready for you, or your potential buyer.

4. Look for Clearance/Special Tag Items

Thrift stores usually have special discounts in the works. When you go in, find out what specials are running, and be sure to stay in the loop with your favorite stores via Twitter, Facebook and blogs.

Don’t forget to register for a Goodwill Rewards Card, too, if you live in the Greater New York and Northern New Jersey area! You can register at the stores or you can print and fill out this form (http://www.goodwillny.org/downloads/Goodwill_Rewards_Fillable_Form.pdf) at home and bring it in to your local store on your next shopping or donating spree.

Either way, a rewards card will give you money back/off on future purchases. I have one at my local GoodwillNyNj that I always swipe when I am making purchases. After spending $100 you get 10% off, it definitely comes in handy for those of us who love thrifting on a weekly basis.

4. Expect to Make Alterations

It’s extremely hard to find items that are in perfect condition for your body & shape. Most clothing bought in thrift stores needs some kind of altering. Be prepared to spend a little extra money altering things to fit your body perfectly, in the end it’ll all be worth it because you can alter it to fit your style & body type better!

5. Inspect your items: A lot of times when people are giving clothing away, there is a reason. The clothing might have a hole in it, a stain, or maybe even be missing a few buttons. Thrift stores do their best to put out items that are “as-good-as-new,” but it never hurts to look twice. Check your items, and inspect them before buying, you may find something you’re not expecting if you don’t do so before you leave the store.

Good luck thrifting, and always make sure to check your local Goodwill stores (and this blog) for specials!
