Optimal Play: The Chambray Shirt

A workshirt works overtime in this week’s Optimal Play! A Good Look’s Emme Bonilla sees a world of possibilities in one simple piece: the chambray skirt. Take a look at three completely different ways to style this look – and get ready to get the most Optimum Play out of your next Goodwill find:

My favorite purchase of the summer! (photo by teenvogue.com)

A chambray shirt is definitely up high on my list of essential wardrobe items. When I spotted this William Rast for Target chambray shirt (brand new with tags!) at the newly opened Goodwill Boutique, I quickly scooped it up.

I love the metallic embellishments on the front pockets and the light, relaxed wash. I haven’t stopped wearing it all summer! I seem to throw it on over everything: dresses, shorts, tanks… It’s the ultimate layering piece but works perfectly on its own.

And the best news – there are more where this came from. Browse your local Goodwill for chambray and join me in the summer of denim love. If you do, here are just a handful of the ways you can style your great Goodwill score…

Look #1: Denim on Denim

A huge trend last fall, wearing denim with denim isn’t going anywhere. The key is to pair the shirt with a darker wash jean and avoid the matchy-matchy look. A metallic woven belt and platform heels keep it from looking too western. Do those flared jeans look familiar? I did a Optimal Play post on them, so here’s another outfit to add to that list!

Look #2: Working Hard for Le Mode

This pieced together polished alternative to casual Fridays.

If your office has a more relaxed dress code but you still want to look professional, try this on for size: swap your plain button down for the chambray shirt, add a pencil skirt and top it off with a short-sleeved blazer. Voila! A chic look that lets everyone know you can get the job done. And don’t forget those essential high heels!

Look #3: Country Ease + City Style

The printed skirt is also a Goodwill find and looks great with chambray

Grab a long printed skirt (a peasant skirt would work well, too!), tie the chambray shirt at your waist and don a pair of platform wedges to counter the midi length. Simple but stylish… What more could you ask from an outfit!

And this little workhorse is not done yet… Keep a look out for a Fall/Winter version of this Optimal Play to see how the chambray shirt can be a staple in your closet year-round!
