Be Cool, Boy: Jackets that Fit the Season

Good news, crafty readers: we’ll be featuring a weekly column by GoodwillNyNj Style Icon David Morgan all about secondhand fashion and DIY style. This week: discovering your outer-layers: jackets made for Fall. Enjoy!

Grab your coat and get some style. There's nothing like secondhand outerwear to make cooler weather cool again.

I do not like cold weather — at all. I would much prefer sweltering heat over blistering cold any day, but, of course considering that I live in New York, I am “blessed” with both (hooray…). New York autumns, however beautiful they may be, are much too brief. Luckily, I’ve found a few cool jackets from Goodwill that will allow me to be a fashionable until Winter’s bite. As long as I can last without getting frostbite, you can find me wearing these:

My amazing military find!

I found this original military jacket on one random thrifting trip with my mother. We were just preparing to leave the store when I spotted it (Goodwill tip: never stop looking, even if you are leaving!). When I tried it on, I was absolutely shocked at how perfect it fit me. I’m pretty slender and have long arms, so it’s really surprising when outwear fits me well. This find was a dream.

My Michael-inspired jacket. Who's bad?

I love 80s fashion and I love Michael Jackson. This vintage leather jacket is a perfect throwback to both inspirations. From the huge shoulder pads to the pleats, this jacket is simply “Bad” — in a good way, of course!

My fantastic purple lumberjack jacket!

At first glance, this jacket is totally unfashionable, but for some reason I love it! I love the fact that it is purple and that it is meant for lumberjackets — it is slightly ironic, and I love a good dose of irony every now and then.

Have you found any amazing Fall items for Goodwill? Feel free to share them with us on Facebook or Twitter. Thanks to Goodwill, it seems I am prepared for Fall. Winter, however, is a completely different beast I fear facing… Here’s to enjoying the season while it lasts!
