Good news, dear gentlemen readers: we’ll be featuring a weekly column by GoodwillNyNj Style Icon David Morgan all about secondhand fashion and DIY style. This week: trashing fuddy-duddy fashion rules and creating outfits with color and scandal… Enjoy!
My amazing friend Shaun gave me these thrifted pair of shorts. They are scandalously short, but I really like them! What do you think?
I have very long legs, and this summer they have been getting a lot of exposure. I have cut about 30% of my pants into shorts, made my very first garment into shorts and now have super short shorts to add to my collection. They make me think of 70s basketball uniforms, which is awesome, although I chose to wear them with classic dress shoes instead of athletic wear (no headband or knee-high socks for me, please).
I paired them with a brown, thrifted Doctor’s bag. Yes, black and brown go together, at least in my book. I attended an all-boys Catholic high school for one year (yes, it’s true), and I remember a teacher once commented that a true gentlemen should never pair a brown belt with black shoes, or vice versa.
For years since then, of course for fear of not being a true gentlemen, I maintained a complex that black and brown must always be segregated, never to mix in fashion. I’m slowly realizing how ridiculous this is, and now proudly pair black and brown together, perhaps losing my gentlemen status in the process.
I went thrifting earlier this week, and spotted this fun t-shirt to go with my unlikely pairing. I have resolved to only buy clothes that I absolutely love, so left the thrift store with this one shirt in tow. The amazingly low prices at Goodwill shouldn’t be reason to hoard. As with everything else in life, be selective.
Black athletic shorts with black dress shoes? A brown doctor’s bag with a colorful tee? For me, style is all about the big picture. Sometimes in theory things don’t seem well together, but in practice it dons another perspective. What is your latest scandalous Goodwill find and/or unlikely pairing?
