Halloween is right around the corner, just waiting to shout BOO! With the holiday in mind, our columnist Lauren is searching her local Goodwill for items that can do double-duty – finds fit for a costume party, but chic enough to last into the days, months and years beyond. Curious about her latest find? Well giddy’up cowboy, here’s this week’s Goodwill Gem: Cowboy Boots!
Need an escape? Whether it’s for a Halloween fantasy or just your average autumn day, nothing can transport you out of the city more quickly than a pair of classic cowgirl boots. This fantastic pair – rounded up at my local Goodwill store, of course – is the real deal.
In a pale beigey-nude color leather, they are the perfect hue to go with all of your favorite winter frocks, from cozy, comfy jeans for a weekend trip upstate or a funky-chic sweaterdress and tights for a day at the office. Soft and versatile, with a solid heel and classic stitch detailing, these boots are really a steal – they’re so easy to wear with almost any casual attire, you’ll be able to feel as if you’ve traveled back to the country almost any day of the week. Not to mention, these pups cry out to be a part of your Halloween scheme.
It may seem like the easiest road to take, but unless it’s Halloween, it’s best to keep the haybales to a minimum and lean towards a tailored, classic country look. Here, I’ve chosen to match them boots up with a pair of well-worn blue jeans and a plaid long-sleeved shirt. The purple color and the ruffle detail on the top keep the look feminine, even though it is so relaxed, cozy, and apple-pickin’-appropriate.
But if you want to think outside the square-dancing box: Take the opposite path and pair these stunning boots with a city girl-chic ensemble. Cowgirl boots with an all-black outfit, like a close-fitting pair of pants or leggings and cozy knit sweater or flowing blouse on top, is not at all traditional, but still laid-back and basic enough to carry these boots. And it is a look that’s somehow a little funky and elegant at once – I mean, when have you ever seen an actual cowgirl dressed in black from head to toe? Unless we’re thinking about Vampire Cowgirls… And with that, a Halloween costume was born.
Have you found a Goodwill Gem you’ll be using this Halloween (and hopefully long after)? Tell me in the comments here, on our Facebook page or through a @GoodwillNyNj tweet. I love seeing your style, so keep us posted! Stay classy, New York & New Jersey!
