Goodwill Gems: Holiday Shopping, One Find at a Time

Ever notice how a single accessory can make a look? Last week, A Good Look columnist Lauren found super-flex fashion pieces at 23rd Street Goodwill. This week, Lauren shops local at the Steinway Goodwill in Astoria and discovers her inner Style Santa. Who knew holiday shopping at Goodwill could be so fun?

This may not be any kind of conventional wisdom, but I think a little touch of leopard print is good for a girl’s soul. I hope the lucky girl who will be receiving sassy heels this year feels the same!

You can find Goodwill treasures everywhere, but sometimes, there’s no place like home. Learn the ropes of your local store – when new arrivals hit the racks, when window items go on sale, which cashier most gets your style – and, most importantly, check back often. If you do, you’ll be evergreen in Goodwill success all year long.

Now, the New York/New Jersey area is full to the brim with Goodwill locations, but my neighborhood Goodwill in Queens (the Steinway Goodwill) has quickly become one of my favorite spots to search for unique accessories and extraordinary finds.

This week, I quickly stopped by this shop after a trip out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday, feeling inspired and energized to take on the often intimidating task of holiday shopping. And what better place to take on such a heady undertaking than my local Goodwill, where I know I’m guaranteed to find thrifty finds to suit even the most demanding fashion maven on my list?

A super sassy shoe find made my day. Holiday shopping can be stressful, but with all the gorgeous gems at the Steinway store (many with original price tags, packaging and all), I didn’t have any trouble locating a perfect gift for one of the wilder girls in my life.

These sexy kitten heels are easy enough on your feet to be worn all night long, even if you’re spending the whole night out on the dance floor. Plus, these are brand new - and completely gift-able!

An amazing friend, hilarious joker, shoe diva and dance party buddy, these demurely styled kitten heels covered with a slightly sexy leopard print seemed to scream her name. The small, though still feminine, heels mean you can actually run around all day in these shoes (absolutely crucial for this active girl), but the daring print make them seem for fun and flirty than practical. The perfect Goodwill gem of a gift – found!

Here’s how to wear this wild pair: Initially, you may think these leopard print heels are too bold for everyday wear, but I think you’d be wrong. The girl getting these shoes could easily add them – and a little sex appeal – to her ordinary work wear in a snap.

Pair heels in a wild print like these with a black or tan pencil skirt and a form-fitting solid sweater (and maybe a touch of red lipstick?) for a slightly 1950s/rockabilly vibe. These would also the perfect way to finish off a big date night outfit, by pairing them with your favorite little black dress and shimmery, metallic clutch.

This body-hugging little black dress is just one of the many classic pieces you probably already own and could easily jazz up with some sassy heels like this leopard print pair.

Not your style? If a night out with the girls is more your thing these days, these heels are perfect for that, too. Pair with skinny black pants or tight gray jeans and a flowy tank and blazer and you’re ready to go dance the night away — and I’m ready to cross one fabulous fashionista off my holiday shopping list! Joy!
