Style Icon Interview: Style Writer Stacey Kay Thomas

Welcome to Part 2 of our interview with Style-writer/Goodwill-lover Stacey Kay Thomas! While our first post covered fashion influences all around the globe, in this second half, our world-traveler, Goodwill Huntingg-author, and newest GoodwillNyNj Style Icon takes on New York and New Jersey’s unique styles, thrifting tips, and some far-out hippy longings. Enjoy!

Don't let the model pout fool you - this girl knows how to have fun! Here Stacey strikes a post with one of her favorite Goodwill finds: a Coach purse.

Hi Stacey – welcome back! We know you’re based in Ohio, but we’d love to tease some NY/NJ-centric thoughts out of your mind. What do you think, from a distanced & wise outsider’s perspective, defines New York and New Jersey style?

One of the best things about New York and New Jersey is the wide range of different people and cultures that are represented within the two states. It truly is a “melting pot,” and you can see that come through in the styles that are seen walking down the street. It would be nice to see New York and New Jersey designers embracing our mixed culture a little bit more than they have been doing. As far as the fashion industry goes, New York City plays it a lot more safe, classic and minimalistic than say London, Paris, or Milan, and that has a lot to do with being the birthplace of sportswear, which remains our calling card and gives us that differential expertise and niche!

Do you think a New York or New Jersey Goodwill would be any different than an Ohio Goodwill? If so, how? If not, why not?

The beauty of Goodwill is that you never know what you’re going to find, and so you have to come prepared to look! A lot of the styles seen in different Goodwill stores have a direct relation to the demographics of the people in the donation area that supply it. So if you’re in New York or New Jersey, know your neighborhoods! If you’re looking for big name designer items, then go to an upscale neighborhood thrift store. If you’re looking for retro 80′s garb, then go to a neighborhood where people are less likely to discard fashion items frequently. The most important tip is to visit your Goodwill stores regularly!

When you go thrift shopping, what do you always try to keep in mind – and keep an eye out for?

I usually have a mental list made out in my mind of what I’m looking for, and so I divide and conquer that way. If something catches my eye though, I don’t hesitate to zip on over in that direction! Shoes and accessories are my weaknesses. I also love a good blazer.

What are the biggest mistakes people make when heading to their local Goodwill?

They don’t keep an open mind! You can’t always expect to find fashionable items as they are presented. Sometimes it takes a little mix and match, a little alteration, or a belt cinch around the waist to make your thrifty find current!

Who do you wish would donate their entire wardrobe to a Goodwill near you? (Supermodels, big sisters, rock stars, and politicos are all fair game…)

I would love to get my hands on some of Rumi from Fashion Toast’s wedge shoes. Those are divine!

What’s your favorite Goodwill find?

There are so many! But, what comes to mind would have to be either my Coach or Fendi bags.

Why do you shop at Goodwill?

It’s cheap, it’s fun, it’s a challenge, and it goes to a great cause! There’s not many other stores that can boast that!

Have you ever donated to Goodwill?

Of course!

For nearly 100 years, GoodwillNyNj has been a pioneer of “reduce, reuse, repurpose.” Imagine: NY & NJ programs reaching as far back as 1915… If you could visit a Goodwill store in any 20th century decade & then travel back to 2010 with armloads of finds, which decade would you choose – and what would you hope to buy?

I’m digging 1970′s style right now. I NEED to find a pair of bell-bottom pants, wide leg trouser pants, some awesome psychedelic T-shirts, and crazy disco platform wedges! Not to mention anything hippie or gypsy is totally vibing with me right now, so the 70′s would definitely have to be my first stop!
